 | | 04/01/2008 7:59 PM |  Alert | My wife decided that she wanted a woodburning kit for Christmas so that she could make a scratch built chest for DMing.
I will try to post pictures to show the finished product.
Here is the front of the chest:
The chest opens up to make a DM screen, with two shelves inside coming out to extend the screen:
Here are closeups for the three panels, from left to right:
LEFT (the picture above)
CENTER (Back of Box) (the picture above)
RIGHT (the picture above)
When the shelves are inside, here are pictures of what the inside looks like:
The chest can be used with the shelves inside. The shelves have felt, so dice can be rolled more quietly. One or two shelves can be removed, as desired.
Five interior shots follow, with stuff on the mini shelves like minis and dice:
The hinges were purchased, but everything else was cut to size, designed, and made by her. I drew the pictures of the minis she wanted for the scenes, and then we scanned them, printed them, and then she did heat transfer and burned them into the wood.

I was thinking if she did starting bid at cost of materials, she could try it with one chest to see what happened, though she wouldn't be doing the woodburning scenes without knowing how much she was getting out of it. It took some time for her to make the first one. I think I could ask her about taking an order if someone was very interested. | |

Materials plus a bit for labor for making a DM Box without woodburning (essentially the box and shelves, etc.) she estimates at $75
We haven't looked into shipping/handling costs
She is open to woodburning also, but the costs would vary based on what was desired.
It would be much easier to do, say, the text (or similar text), the S designs, and two larger minis per panel, instead of scenes.
I can draw any of the minis and she could burn them into the box.
She hasn't thought through costs for woodburning.
Woodburning took longer than making the box, though.
The felt on the interior of the box can be any of a selection of colors, and felt itself isn't very expensive.

| | 04/08/2008 10:14 AM | Alert | | I would definitely want the woodburning illustrations she used on this box, with the exception of a couple of smaller spiders and a simple mountain in the background in place of the large monstrous spider on the one panel. I would also prefer a dark blue felt in place of the lighter felt. A stain versus a natural finish would be nice, but not so dark as to obscure the woodburning, and antique brass hardware would be preferable. If the price isn't too prohibitive with all of these extras, this is something I would definitely love to have. | |
