Funny enough, I was just looking at this article yesterday. I haven't tried it, but I wanted to add their link to my site since the original Tact-Tiles are no longer in production and it's a very good tutorial on how to make them from scratch.

I may eventually try making a set as well, but at the moment I have waaaaaaay too many other projects going on.

I've never heard of Tacttiles.  I've just been using a chessex game mat with some dry erase markers and the DDM maps.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

Tact-Tiles are square tiles similar to the ones you make in the tutorial except that they have tabs on each edge much like a puzzle peice which 'lock' them in place on the table.  The originals went out of production due to some sort of trouble with their manufacturers.  Not sure exactly what.  They use the dry erase markers and are really easy to break down for storage and travel.  I was lucky enough to get a set and ever since my old battlemats have sat gathering dust.  They are extremely hard to come by now.  This tutorial for making your own.  I'll probably make a set eventually simply to have a back-up.

*EDIT* I forgot to mention that the originals are really well made.  Properly taken care of (stored) they seem to be very durable and they are really stable when set up on the gaming table.  They seem to be fairly scratch resistant too.

N_333,

I think it was you who mentioned them in another thread (the one about "too late to start collecting D&D tiles") and that got me thinking (and searching).

As I mentioned on "geeked", I might try backing mine with something non-slip instead of trying to "key" them properly.    Might be as simple as putting a grid over some vinyl floor tiles.  (if time ever allows)

cheers,
kid

I've been eyeing those instructions for a while but have never remembered to take a mats list with me while at JoAnns. I've got 4 wet-erase mats atm but the marker echoing is really bad after a while. :/
