I gotta say, this game looks absolutely amazing. I've read the rulebook and played the demo. It seems really easy to get the basics down.
Now, I'm sure you've seen me on here from time to time blathering on about how awesome hill giants are - I come from the DDM camp. But I find it hard to find people to play this game with me in person. The group I DDM with have little to no interest in this game and I'm not really sure how to "get off my feet". Any recommendations? Should I just wait around here for pick up games on the maxminis interface?
From what I have seen, passion is the aspect that fits my playstyle. Some of the pieces that have really caught my eye come from that aspect: Lone Wolf, Bloodthirsty Redcap, & Flame Harrower. I haven't seen them get a lot of "air time" in winning warbands . . . why is that? Is there something I'm missing on those 3 pieces?
Thanks for looking and any advice you can offer!

Well - are there any stores nearby you that are supporting the game?  Edge events?  Try to find live opponents that way.  Otherwise you can play on Maxminis interface or alternatively, Vassal.  Both are viable and fun ways to play and learn the game.

Passion has its good points and bad points.  Obviously their low Def/Lif is the bad but their high Power is the good.  Lone Wolf looks tough but his drawback really hamstrings him in a game where the way your pieces work TOGETHER is of paramount importance.  Bloodthirsty redcap sees alot of play - I know I play him quite often - good piece, tricky but good.  Flame Harrower is crap IMO.  He must be engaged to use his ability and if he is engaged his stats are too weak - you might get lucky with one assault roll before he is either disrupted or killed.  I haven't seen him played effectively yet.  Good passion pieces IMO - Alluring succubus, Boneblade Serpent, Forgeblind Punisher, Boneclan Hunter, Redcap, and Heartsblood Temple (one of the top ten in the set).

I've found I few places that sell the boosters/starters, but no one that holds any games [it's strange, I know].
Aw, that sucks about the Lone Wolf - by far, my favorite piece. I figured he'd be good as a unit to go pick on enemies that are on their own . . . one on one, he looked solid to me. But, I guess I'm wrong.
What about the heart render? He looks expensive, but damn! Ferocity with 6 power - pretty nasty. I have a thing for werewolves.
For right now, I guess I'll hang around here when I'm free to see if I can pick up a game or two.
Thanks for your help.

I guarntee you that if you get a game going more people will start playing. Everytime I've shown people a short demo more than half go out an get the starter set. The last full pick up game, it was a starter vs starter, no real construction, and the game was tight, tense, and fun. Two and a half hours went by and we didn't even notice. I hate games like chess, I have no patience for them, but Dreamblade was great!

Show people the game, and they will come.

Not many good Passion creatures in the base set. They are all very fragile (low-defense) and while they have high attacks, they don't usually survive to attack more than once.
A good combo is to use Passion & Valor. The Valor creatures have bodyguard, to keep the passion creatures alive longer. And effective blade abilities to make better use of the high-power of passion creatures.
Best passion creatures in base set;
Bloodthrirsty Redcap
Heartsblood Temple
Skeever Hatchling
If you like passion ceratures, you will absolutly want  the Unsated Ragedrake from the next expansion. It's "Trample" ability should seriously improve Passion warbands.

I disagree with the above comment that the Flame Harrower is a sub-par piece.  If timed correctly, Assault can be devastating.

Funny thing is, I said I wouldn't get into this game. I already spend too much on DDM, but I played a demo and found that Dreamblade really is interesting enough that it's very hard to ignore. Compound that with a failed attempt to organize a DDM even this past weekend, and I ended up buying some Dreamblade. My local store has almost no support for DDM (though I'm trying to change that). They do, however, strongly support Dreamblade, since the owner loves it so much. Every week, they have a sanctioned Dreamblade tournament. So, when I threw a DDM event and nobody came, I ended up reading the Dreamblade rules, buying a starter and a booster and then playing the store owner for a couple of hours. It's fun, and it's intense to play. I'm thoroughly intimidated by the 96 figure set, though, 32 of which are rare figures, especially when each booster costs $15 and has just 7 figures. There's no way I can buy by the case. I'm just not going to spend that much money on Dreamblade. So, I hope I can have a modicum of success with the limited collection I get from buying the occassional booster. I'm shocked that rares can go for as much as $50, already, if they're considered highly competitive (Scarab Warcharm), so I just don't see buying singles as an option. Still, even if I can't build the most competitive bands, it should be fun to play, until I face cutthroat players who've invested $500-$600 bucks in the best figures and have a thorough understanding of the ins and outs of the game.

That effect has been noticable at my local FLGS.
A couple of players (including me, oops) turned up with warbands including multiple Scarab warcharms. The scarabs didn't win all their games but they did win the majority. With the result that some players were left with the impression that they lost because they had been out-purchased not out-played. While that is inherently a factor in collectable games, you don't want it to be a dominant factor because of one high price rare.
The Scarab is not a game breaking unit. But it's high ebay price may be breaking the game's sales. By priceing some of the players out of tournaments. If the next couple of expansions follow the same pattern with a single obviously strong Rare. That would hurt the popularity of the game a lot. I think what the game needs is a few (un)Commons that are as clearly cost-effective as the Scarab.

You're probably right, Lance (Chad from Dallas here, BTW).  It just turns out usually that it isn't very scary in my experience.  I'll add that I've never played the piece myself only against it and never been worried overly that I couldn't get rid of it - for the price, I'd be much more worried about a Forgeblind Punisher coming my way. BUt, no doubt, unanswerable damage in the spawn phase is very nice when it can be pulled off.

So Lance H,
How would you rate the usefulness of the passion pieces? I mean, what's your top 10?
I would like to hear the opinion of the official go-to guy for Dreamblade passion players.
I saw your evaluation of every piece, but what do you consider musts?
