I was going for straight forward rules so that the complexity can be in the strategy and the pieces themselves. Rob Heinsoo did an awesome job on the design and it does things that no miniature game ever published has done. Games go faster because you never count or measure line of sight. Each game is more varied because you start with different pieces in play and your units come into the game in different orders. It is hard to explain everything going on but I suspect that you guys will try it and see for yourselves. And I also suspect that you will be surprised at how much you like it.
It's certainly possible I'll be surprised how much I like it, but it'd be extremely hard. The amount I *expect* to like it is very, very high! From the moment I played my first 'game' of DDM (3 players, 1 mini each), I was hooked. After my first two 'real' games, I was sure that I loved the game. This game, I'm already almost as impressed with, and I haven't actually played it yet.
Plus... Money!! [:P]

After more consideration, this game could be pretty good for the long-term success of DDM. It may end up serving as a bridge between MtG players and DDM. They try out Dreamblade, eventually move on to - or start playing in addition - DDM.
I'd still rather DDM be the mini game with the big cash prizes. Even there, though, Dreamblade's OP support could be an experiment. If it is a big success, perhaps DDM will emulate? In contrast, it'd be much harder to measure the success of an OP experiment in DDM, as RPG sales would obscure the success/failure of the OP side of things.

[snip] and Dagni's recent forays into MtG suggest that he might be as well, although he has been surprisingly mum on the subject. Grasshof is as well, so there you have it. The DDM constructed champ and Sealed Champs like it, as do some of the top 8ers.
But I don't think any of us are leaving DDM for "greener pastures." This can replace world of warcraft or some such thing....
Just give me time, I was reading the rules at work yesterday, that took plenty enough extra time for one day.
Yeah, no way it's replacing DDM (so long as the biggest tournaments don't conflict, heh - glad to hear that the GenCon tourneys are on different days).

I mainly use the DDM miniatures for my RPG sessions.
I don't like a figure for which I don't know its world, environment, society, history, tactics etc

The gameplay is great. Each time I play I learn another nuance. Warband building is a completely different animal from DDM. The game, in fact, is completely different, and utilizes a separate set of neurons in my cranium.
The team working on the game knows what they're doing. They bring many years of experience of game design, from our minis games, D&D and M:tG (check out the credits in the online rulebook). I've even pitched in on a dev team for a future DBM set, but my meager contribution pales in comparison to the great work the core design and dev teams have done.
In general, I'm looking forward to our internal events and leagues, though DDM remains my top priority and interest.
No official letter huh...
Well I'm liking it and I had a store discussion about it when I did my store visit as a Delegate. There is already a buzz in the air. One person had a question if this was supposed to be Hecatomb with minis, but after looking over the rules he seemed pleased. I can't wait to start trying out this game. | | Sean Banks Champion of Elementals Official Organizer Gen Con 05 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 06 maxminis Event | Gen Con 06 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 07 Community Event

I'm a gamer at heart, so I love to try out new games and rule systems. I gave the rules a once-over and they seem pretty good so far - will depend a lot on what kinds of figures they release (balance level).

I believe balance will be adequately handled by cost. Just load up on big, powerful creatures and you'll probably be overrun by smaller creatures that you foe will be able to get out nearly every turn. | | Rick Teverbaugh WOTC Delegate Dreamblade Rules Advisor

I've played DDM and SWM extensivly, but they are basically the same game (with DDM being much stronger). This game is a breath of fresh air. I am highly anticipating its release and "da cash money" was enough to put it over the edge for me.
After reading the rules through twice, much like Dagni I think this game is going to be amazing. Strategy and math skills (for warband building) will be very important and my love of chess will finally have an outlet again. I am a very competitive person and now I will have another game that can satisfy that.
I eagerly await the vassal mod so I can try this puppy out. | | 13th Place at the 2005 DDM Championship in GenCon

And it is what brought me here. I don't play DDM, SWM, or AAM. I did play MK, MW, and HC before Topps bought WizKids. I probably would have steered clear of this game if not for the immediate OP and the marquee events. I don't expect to win much beyond local events, but it might bring together the passive and active gamers due to the lure of the "Pro Tour". The biggest issue will be for a store to give up the time and the space to run a sanctioned event when the tables are already filled Fri through Sun with FNM, JDC, YGO, SWM, DDM, RPGA on a weekly basis. I suspect that stores will feel obligated to try to hold 1 Sealed event per month -- but at $45 for entry (Starter + Booster, or 3 Boosters), the event better be sanctionable with a minimum of 4 players. Constructed events will see far more turnout -- where some players will be able to field rag-tag warbands of commons culled from the store's singles (which will probably be fed by the excess of the couple of gonzo players that will buy a case or two).

| I just did a quick count on the vote and here is how it stands. I went with the lower on some of the votes just for ease of record keeping, but this also includes Shoes letter with held.

| Not surprising really.
Totally different type of game and game play, aimed at a different kind of player than DDM.
Not that there won't be 'crossover,' gamers play games. But when things settle out the draw of the game will be how you like how it plays. The money won't matter, except to those that the money matters to now. And they, by and large, are not DDM players anyway.

I guess it's possible but from everything I've heard to this point, it sounds like a much different animal than DDM. I think there's a place for both, although I can see Dreamblade taking some DDM players away from us. I mean, the money only goes so far. Well, for some of us anyway.
On the other hand, Dreamblade could open up awareness to the point that more people are exposed to DDM. That, if it resulted in new players, would be a very good thing for DDM. | | WotC - making me wish more and more every day for a return to the TSR days. :( I fought the snark and the snark won. Ghendar,
I think your right, it is a very different beast. I'm not sure how many people it will pull away from DDM intirely. Some people will jump in and try it out, they may even complete, but I think DDM is solid and it is usefull for RPG as well. I agree. It's the board gamer in me that is intrigued by DreamBlade, not the minis player. In fact, my wallet wished they used tokens or pogs in place of minis and sold it as an expandable board game(with "boosters" costing a few dollars).

| | B - If I make it to GenCon this year I will sign up for the release tourny and if I like it and I get a good grasp of the strategy then I will consider buying into it. The main problem will be support in my area. For some reason my area is realy light on any Tourny play for any game. My area is the same way. The closest area is ussually NYC, but they do not always have events. So it can be a 3 hour drive to Syracuse or up to Massacusets, or down into New Jersy. | | Sean Banks Champion of Elementals Official Organizer Gen Con 05 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 06 maxminis Event | Gen Con 06 maxminis Event | Winterfantasy 07 Community Event | |
