Anyone see and/or take pictures of the new WotC dungeon tiles at GenCon? I've heard nothing from GenCon regarding the tiles, which is odd considering they're due to be released in a matter of weeks.

I didn't get any pictures, but they are very nice.  They used them for the 'Spellspitter's Abbadon' delve event for Xen'drivk expeditions.  I'm not sure how many sets they used for each table, if it was just one then they are a pretty good value - two would be OK - if it took more than that to make up the dungeon layout I saw they probably aren't worth it.  They are nice thick cardboard - thicker than the basic game tiles from last year - and are slickly laminated.  I'm not sure if they can be marked on or not.  There was a lot of nice variety in the art side and then they all flipped to a plain grid side to be multi-purpose floor.  All in all I'd say they're certainly worth a look if you like such things for your game.

Many thanks for that update. It does sound very promising in terms of the quality of the tiles but, like you say, it all depends on how many tiles are in a pack.

I picked up a set at GenCon  and am very impressed with them.   You ge 7-8 full sized sheets to punch out  with nice detail, sturdiness and finish.    I would recommend 2 sets to really get you started, but you could make due with one.   They are well worth 9.99 retail  or what ever discounted rate you can get them for.  I'm looking forward to the next set, and will most likely buy 2 more sets of set 1.

I will likely buy a few as well. I won a copy at Gencon and am impressed enough to pick up another copy when they are released.

On a related note, Paizo's rpg tiles are also pretty nice but are quite a bit thinner.

Yea, and Paizo's price on new sets is now $12.99.  Perhaps a little competition will see a price reduction...

I like both.  Paizo's are more dramatic, while WotC's are more modular.  Likely, I'll use both!

When you do end up getting a set you need to punch out each room and  hallway from a larger sheet.  Make sure you save the scrap edges as they can be very useful as well.   They make nice "thin" walls,  balance beams across pits,  railings, etc.   Use a razor blade to cut them to size and they work nice.   It was a neat bonus that adds to the set.

I got a set as my prize when I rolled the giant d20.  When they arrive (I had to ship them to myself), I'll try to get some pics up unless someone beats me to it.

If you got a chance to see the delve at the WOTC both, one whole table used about 3 or 4 packs and we had a lot of pieces left over.  For those who weren't there, on each table was two dungeon set ups that each spanned maybe two or three feet the long way.  Having to punch out all those suckers, I was impressed by how much you got in one pack.

I'll end up with both as well.  I picked up the graveyard, town, and other pack that Piazo does, and will get at least 2 packs of the tiles from WotC.

They are very solid, many being double sided.  They have a textured finish on them that gives it almost a cloth feel on top.  They appear to be very durible and look like they can be used to build most standard dungeons.

Ask and you shall receive.  Here are a couple shots of the set, not yet punched out.  As you can see they are double sided: "plain" and "features."

The ones made for Confrontation by Rackham Games are as good if not better. And they are reversible ... no blankness on the backside.

Google up "confrontation tiles gaming reversible"

They had them on display at Gencon and they are awesome.

I wonder how thick they actually are? That's a major selling point for me: durable tiles would be great.
Review: D&D Dungeon Tiles (DT1)

I am very impressed with the durability of these tiles: a) they're as thick as the tiles in the Basic Set; b) they're manufacutred with some kind of gloss/laminate finish - not the regular kind of lamination you might get done at an office supplies shop, but a slightly textured one, difficult to describe, but a quality finish - spilled drinks should wipe away clean easily, though I prefer not to test the theory on my own tiles thanks [)]

One of my favorite parts of the first set was actually a late addition – the two largest tiles (8 x 10) reverse to buildings useful for many town encounters – an inn and a small shop.
These are indeed very nice inclusions, one I hope will be expanded upon in future sets.

The Inn might be described as cozy and intimate - containting a bar, three tables, and seating for 15 patrons. There is also a small (2 squares) keg room behind the counter, and a fireplace with room for a bard or storyteller to sit/stand beside. Although small, memories of the Inn of Last Home (Dragonlance) come to mind, as do other memorable inn scenes.

Tables and seating are illustrated with miniatures in mind, as each round table is centred in a 5'square, surrounded by 4 chairs each in their own 5'square, leaving no ambiguity regarding miniature placement. Tables aren't limited only to groups of 4 characters, though, as additional characters can stand or pull up a "virtual" chair in the diagonal squares around each table (potentially, 3x3 squares with 8 characters positioned around a central table). Though, brawling in a full tavern could be difficult, as there is no free walkspace between tables of seated patrons.

The Shop also has a counter, dividing the premises into two sections. The smaller section in front of the counter, possibly a customer reception entrance, is decorated with an ornate rug and one wall full of shelving. In the centre of the larger area beyond the counter is 1 square table (could possilby be a crate) and more shelving. Behind the counter is also small (2 squares) private/storage room.

It is impossible to tell what is on the shelves, they could be books, spell components or antiques, making this shop generic and useful for many purposes. Although the shelving do appear similar to bookcases, with some imagination they could be weapon racks, at least until an armoury tile appears in a future set?

An inn and a small shop are a bit sparse to base a town on, but you have to start somewhere. No doubt, other useful town tiles will be added with each set.

Both establishments have paths leading to their doors, which match up in the same place along each edge (third square from the corner), which will hopefully be the standard so that future town tiles will join consistently.

The reverse of each tile is generic stone tiled dungeon floor. These range from 8x10 to 1x1, and can be arranged to form many different dungeon configuraions, some examples of which are printed on the inside cover.

Feature tiles include a useful assortment such as fountain, pool of water, magic circles, pits, chasms, treasure pile, statues, stairs, porticulli, doors etc.

Any of these tiles could be used to connect Basic Set tiles with corridors and stairways, or adding or replacing features to rooms, though Dungeon Tiles art appears somewhat darker than Basic Set tiles. I think I prefer the lighter dungeon floors of the Basic Set, and consistency between the two sets would have been nice, but this is a minor quibble.

By comparison, Basic Set tiles are 10x10, while the largest Dungeon Tiles (inn and small shop, and their dungeon floor flip-sides) are 8x10. Basic Set box might be a convenient place to store both sets of tiles, particularly as the series grows.

The only drawback I can foresee using these tiles, is like when playing Scrabble, and someone bumps the board, which could happen frequently reaching over to move miniatures, particularly with the smaller tiles.

Yes, there are other map and tile products available. Fantastic Locations is a beautiful product, but the map layouts aren't as versatile as having rearrangable tiles. You can photoshop your own tiles, if you have the talent, or print them for free online, but unless you have durable laminated card-stock, you won't beat Dungeon Tiles for quality.

I can see myself using these tiles more and more as the variety of features, environments and township tiles expands with each set (note, this set does not contain any outdoor tiles). A solid start to a series that will only become more useful over time.

Review: Rackham Reversible Gaming Tiles

French game company Rackham has recently released their tactical roleplaying game Cadwallon. Accompanying it's release are four sets of Reversible Gaming Tiles (Set A, B, C and D) sold separately. Each set consistes of 15 double-sided, beautifully illustrated, 12x12 square gaming tiles.

These tiles are similar to D&D Basic Set tiles, in that they're square, and you arrange adjacent tiles to form a dungeon (or city, or wilderness etc). They have a glossy finish and are beautifully illustrated; however, they're not nearly as thick as D&D Basic or Dungeon Tiles. You will need to store these in a safe place to avoid creasing or scoring.

Each set includes city street, wilderness, dungeon, sewer, and building interior tiles. So if you buy one set, you have a nice assortment to get started, but if you buy two or more sets, you expand the variety of city street, wilderness, dungeon etc tiles you have already invested in. Each set's tiles join seamlessly with those from previous sets.

Outdoor tiles feature the same location in daylight one side, and night-time on the reverse. This might seem a waste to someone wanting different scenes on each side, but I think day and night versions really helps set the mood. Daytime scenes are good for any occasion, while night-time scenes are good for hiding-in-shadows, or espionage- or horror-themed campaigns. Information Gathering among the locals during the day, then returning to the scene to break/enter under the cover of night.

Interior tiles feature different scenes on each side, for example, dungeon on one side, sewer on the reverse.

As already mentioned, these tiles are lavishly illustrated. While for the most part, care has been taken to differentiate between occupied and unoccupied squares for miniature purposes, there are many instances where confusion may arise.

While I like the concept of fitting together tile to build a city street, I have a few issues regarding their practical use. These tiles are aerial view, so you only see cobbled streets and roof-tops, so they're not nearly as useful as an Inn or Store interiors might be. You could use them for street fight or chase scenes. The streets are narrow and warren-like. Stairs occasionally take paths seemingly over the roof-tops, which might provide interesting movement options for Rogues, particularly if you flip the tile over and use the night-version, although detail can be more difficult to discern on the night-versions. Exterior doors are not clearly visible, and the buildings themselves seem much smaller than the rooms illustrated on the interior tiles, which makes me question whether a different scale is being used for indoor/outdoor scenes?

Interior scenes use wear/scrape marks on the floors to indicate which way doors open. The night-version of a wharf tile shows the moon reflecting it's glow on the water. These are nice touches.

The artwork, for the most part, is very inspiring, encouraging you to write encounters specific to some of these scenes. One dungeon tile, for example, depicts a bloodstained, rotted-timber boxing platform surrounded by four torches, nearly three dozen stools, with mugs and kegs strewn across tables. It isn't difficult to imagine a noisy room full of drunken half-orcs betting on the outcome of a fight, perhaps even one the PCs find themselves brawling in.

One small caveat, there are a few instances where art has been duplicated between Sets. I see no need for this to occur, and it is extremely disappointing. I really hope Rackham continue this series, however there is no excuse for duplicate tiles in a series that has released only four Sets!

It seems dungeon map products are the flavour of the month, and with Fantastic Locations, D&D Basic, Dungeon Tiles, and now Rackham Reversible Gaming Tiles, you aren't short of choice. Rackham tiles would make an excellent addition to any DM's bag of tricks.

As you alude to, my only problem with the Rackham tiles is that they are very large.  That makes them modular with themselves, but you don't really get a chance to mix things up.  Likely this is fine if your going to use the same tiles over and over for the same location, but what happens with the PC's pick up and move to the next town?  I like the modular, small size of Paizo's, and WotC's for this reason.

On a related note, I played the Descent: Journeys in the Dark boardgame at Gencon (cool game btw) and it comes with several suitable dungeon tile type pieces that fit together like puzzle pieces. They're not quite as thick as the WotC dungeon tiles but a hell of a lot thicker than the Paizo ones. The game also comes with doors and markers for treasure and chests and such. A bunch of unpainted plastic monster figures as well.

I'm going to have to free up some cash for those.  Between the tile packs, map packs and the Basic Games, WotC are really delivering products to enhance the gaming experience to their customers!

You know, the more I meet and work with WOTC, the more I've come to realize that even those people who don't game are really dedicated to doing just what you said, enhance the gaming experience and make sure people have fun.

Oh, and I've already gotten one pack of these from GenCon, and I'll probably buy another one soon.  (I'll need to look at those other products mentioned in this thread as I'm less familiar with them.)

Got mine at the FLGS today. These tiles are incredibly useful to me. I almost got an extra Arcane Corridors as well (that should have come with two pews).

I hope that future sets have two large tiles that can be placed together to form one very large room.

Those tiles are great. One of the best products WotC is releasing right now. Much more useful to me than optional, niche type rules variant books.

In this aspect it really is a cool use. And if you don't spend a lot of time searching for the right piece, it can save a lot of time compared to drawing the map time and time again. Plus, with more sets coming out, every room doesn't look the same anymore!
