Is there any plan to return the AAM section to Maxminis?

It is listed as a known bug in the NEW FORUMS BUGS TO FIX thread, so its absence will hopefully be remedied soon.

This seems to be a rather strange bug, since the AAM forums have been visible right under the SWM forums for me the whole time (during the whole change-over process). They're now listed as "Axis and Allies CMG."

Well, for me, during the test phase they were not included on the main list, but were available from the forum menu at the bottom on the right. When the switchover occurred, they disappeared from there for me as well. Now, AAM General/Skirmish and Trading should appear for everyone in the Axis and Allies CMG group under SWM. You may or may not be able to see the AAM Historical Scenarios forum in its own group near the bottom of the list, since it is apparently the reason why the whole AAM group was disappearing. If anyone can't see the AAM General/Skirmish and Trading forums (with the AAM CMG group expanded, of course), please post here to let us know.
