| I recently got a set of the Crystal Caste 1 lb. random dice and wasn't thrilled with what I got. I know they are basicly factory leftovers, but I ended up with a collection that is closer to 10 each of 9 types of dice and a few random die, rather than the more truly random mix of type/color/pattern I was expecting.Â
I know I can't be picky, and I'm sure I'll find something to do with the 11 bright orange opalescent 12 siders... but it still isn't quite what I was hoping for, ya know?
So my local game store guy is ordering a few of the Chessex version of the Pound-O-Dice, and I've heard good things about them and was wondering if anyone out there has had any experience with them.

| | Around about when Harbinger first came out, a few of us bought the Chessex Pound-o-dice together and then drafted them. There were of course no sets, but there was quite a variety (and very few doubles). Some were pretty ugly (bright pink?), but others were pretty good. At the time, we didn't have many dice and so this was a great way to quickly/cheaply build up a decent dice collection. I have no complaints about the Chessex Pound-o-dice (of a couple years ago). | |

| When I buy dice for my store (I don't sell sets, just random ones) I get the Chessex Pound o Dice. People like to pick what they want, plus the single set of 'rare' dice that comes in each pound is a nice bonus that people always buy (way, way before I run out of the dice from the pound).
So I would have to thumbs up Chessex... | | Gryfalia's Aerie Bloomington/Normal's only dedicated Game Store! www.gryfaliasaerie.com forums.gryfaliasaerie.com

| OK, I've gotten both the Chessex and Crystal Caste versions and here's what I found.
Chessex: Pros. Very few duplicates and guarantees at least one full set of polys. Cons. Almost all the dice were either plain or from the speckelled lines, there was only one clear, a couple marbeled and no pearl/opalescent dice.
Crystal Caste: Pros. They seemed to pull from every line of dice available with a large % from premium lines. Cons. A very large # of duplicates, with 10+ identical 6 sided dice of several types, 10+ identical (but cool looking) flourescent orange 12 siders, 6 identical 20 siders.... you get the idea. I did get some of every type (d4, d6, d10 etc.), but the mix was far less random than the Chessex version. The Dwarven Stone die that was included was one of the smaller size dice, and really didn't make the mix much more worth the $. I'd rather buy the Dwarven Stone dice seperately and as complete sets and get a truly random mix of the premium quality dice.
Between the two 'One pound random mixe' bags I've built three pretty decent looking sets. If you like the anticipation of grab bag style buying these are good dice at a great price, just don't get your hopes up too high, because you could be disappointed.

| Yep. At PentaCon in Ft. Wayne last November, a retailer was selling some old Chessex dice for $2.50 a set, so there are at least 4 more sets of dice that aren't in that older picture.

| Vreck has tossed down the gauntlet. Let's see who can top that pile o' dice. I have a HUGE amount but the are in storage when my game room turned into a nursery recently.
I picked up the bulk of my collection back in 98-99 or so at the GenCon Chessex booth dice grab. I flirted with the counter girl a bit and she let me use the big scoop (32 oz) for only a couple bucks. I must of came back 5-6 times that year. Never had much luck in later years. It costs something like $25 now for the big scoop. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! | | OMG. I just had a great idea. WOTC, or someone else, can start selling randomly packaged dice, 8 to box, 4 common, 3 uncommon and 1 rare. Each style of dice; color, sides, pattern, would be matched with a power or feat and each would come with a full color data 'card' that tells about the particular die, its abilities and so on. Every quarter or so a new 'set' of dice would be released under a cool fantasy related naming scheme. Anyone? Anyone? This would be great! Starter packs would of course come with a dice bag and rules pamphlet that described dice rolling techniques and placement strategies for table top games. Every couple of years there could be a 'huge' set with special 100 sided dice or equivalent.

| As though they need to make them random for us to buy more than we need. We all know we need only one set, but how many of us have "fireball" dice, magic misle dice, damage dice, not mention dice for other systems (I hoard d10 for vampire games), etc, ad nauseum.
Nice suggestion, though. | I love dice... I have bought 6 sets of the pound o dice, and well... I have more dice than I know what to do with em...
