A few weeks ago, WotC sent out nerf brains to various customers. We're finally starting to find out about the product behind the marketing campaign.
http://www.gleemax.com/articles/announcement001.html
What do you think of WotC's plan for a new web portal for strategy gamers?
[This thread is not for faction/battle RP or for being silly, so please keep that sort of thing on the WotC board's Gleemax section where it belongs.]

| One hand: I think too many gamers are naturally inclined to be introverts for this to be a huge success.
The other hand: Most gamers are naturally creative and seek some degree of approval from their peers and so this will probably be a success.
The third hand: I think this fits nicely with what I think is ultimately the reason behind the digital initiative. Kids are fluent and comfortable with the Internet. Magazines will go the way of microfiche eventually, but, kids already have mostly abandoned all other media portals. So, it makes sense that Wizards would go this route.

| | In many ways this is fantastic. The problem I hear from gamers time and time again is that they can't find anyone to play with. If this portal helps facilitate that, then it's a great addition. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

| I love the idea. I consistently have trouble finding gamers.  The comment above about gamers generally being introverts is interesting and at least partially true. Although I am generally very outgoing, I am not comfortable wandering into game stores and inserting myself into a game, for whatever reason. However, I am very comfortable starting a conversation by email and vetting gamers through forums, blog comments, journal entries and the like. I suspect many introverts would like to 'interview' potential gamers at arms length using technology.
More specifically, I think the problem is that the methods currently available online to find gamers never reach critical mass. I use the Nashville Meetup as well as 2 of the Google map things (Flickrs?) and I've gotten a couple of nibbles but no actual players out of them yet. If Wizards can successfully consolidate many players from the hundreds of strategy game sites and communities out there, they could have a very successful portal. I am glad they included language that they are trying to build a community of gamers, even non-WoTC gamers.
As a proponent of using technology to enhance efficiency in many parts of life (mine and others), all I can say to Wizards is: More please, thank you! | | Trade Ref Thread: http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=16247 Homes: http://games.loopingthehen.com

| | It's interesting, but I barely have the time to play in real-life, let alone digitally. I'm guessing this initiative isn't really aimed at me. I think it's for the MySpace gamer. It is a neat idea, though, and kudos to WotC for developing it. I may check it out again when some of the old Avalon Hill board games make it to digital format. | | | |

| A long time ago (relative to the current pace of technology) someone probably said "What do you know, there's a new search engine company. 'Google,' I think it's called. Hmm. I wonder if it'll have an impact."
Gleemax intends to be similar in scale.

Hey Raland, it turns out that this thing in your sig attributed to Einstein actually probably was never said by him. I did some research into this, and it turns out that in the existing literature of material written by Einstein, or quotes that have been recorded, he's never said this thing about bees.
If you happen to have found evidence that he really did say that, please let me know.
The reason I ask is this happens to have something to do with my line of work, and I'm always interested in this sort of thing.

Dave Well there's allways this quote about bees:
Oh, yeah, what are you gonna do? Release the dogs? Or the bees? Or the dogs with bees in their mouth and when they bark, they shoot bees at you?

Give it some time. The Gleemax thing is being introduced in stages. For now, it'll seem to be one thing, later it will seem to be another. If you judge Gleemax by what it is today, then, six months from now, you'll be judging by the wrong standard.
It's kinda weird, but that's the progression plan they're taking with it.

| | I don't think it's a bad tact. This is very new for them, so this build up allows everyone to get used to it, spread the word, etc. If it came out whole cloth I think it would have a harder time launching. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

I seem what you mean about the present state of the boards. Thus far the majority of the posts don;t seem all that interesting/usefull. I'll start posting some CoC stuff there shortly and see if I get any bites. | | Pathetic Earthlings.
