May be old news for some, but was suprised to see it.

The filing dates back to 2002 and, to be fair, is narrow enough to
exclude anything that doesn’t involve losing or exchanging parts as a
consequence of play events. That, um, does not include Pirates.

Apperently the patent states:

“A game, toy or article of manufacture includes a set of rules and at least one model. The model has multiple movable parts, where under the rules of play, the model begins in an assembled configuration. As the model loses points under the rules of play, at least some of the parts are removed from the model, or replaced with substitute parts. The model may be formed from a panel or other substantially planar member, with the individual pieces formed therein. Methods of game play, computer-implemented games, and other aspects of the invention are described herein. Many other options are possible, as described above.”

I kinda agree with posters (from above linked comments) that it will be more bark than bite, trying to get pirates stopped, (wizkids have already counter filed or something) but it will hamper new games of the type.

Actually, it's Hasbro.

I heard one side of this story that said nothing would have been done about Pirates had not a Star Wars starship game came out.

Next Hasbro will patent the human brain. No, not how it works...just having one. Then they can sit down and rake in the cash every time a baby is born. Brilliant!

Well, the patent was filed 2 years before Pirates came out, before Wizkids was even founded. It's a logical patent to seek.

Meh. It does not seem such a novel idea to me. Even for an idea proposed a few years back.
I think that intellectual property laws need a major rewrite as they no longer encourage and protect new ideas but actually act as a barrier for such.
Then again, in the current business atmosphere you better patent something before your competition does or at least have some other patents to file counter claims if needed.

Yeah, it almost is, "Don't hate the player, hate the game."

If you don't jump on things you could have some interesting consequences, like when Microsoft patented the tracker wheel that the ipod uses.

I recall a game called "Combots" Which pre-dates 2002 by a lot.
Why is it US laws allow companies to patent ideas that already exist. ???

Um, not just us. An Australian patented the wheel.

Anyways, if a company didn't patent the idea, why shouldn't another company do so? I agree that sometimes it gets funky and weird and ridiculous. Companies will search these patents to make sure they aren't copying something, so if this other game didn't do it, it could easily be overlooked. Just a basic web search with the name "Combots" shows computer games, not a card-based game.

The danger! From what I understand, the guy who designed it for WotC is the one who left to join (start?) Wizkids...

Combots was definatly lead minis of combat robots, with removable bits.
And the Patent wording seems to be including computer games. So presumably games software like the various "Battlemech/MechWarrior" games would fit the description.

Don't tell me you already had the circular transportation facilitation device before us!

I'd guess WotC will use D&D 4e to justify as many patents for computer RPG games as they can...
Thats probably one of the big reasons why Hasbro wants 4th edition.
