I was at my FLAGS today, so I was browsing the D&D books that I don’t own.  Now, I realize there are way more books than I will ever own, but I like to look nonetheless.  There was a new one I hadn’t seen before.  I don’t recall the exact name, something like “Dungeon & Dragon Adventures”.  It was hard bound and had a sleek black cover reminiscent of the classy re-issues of the PHB and the DMG.  I picked it up to take a look and what shocked at how light weight it was.  In fact, it was so thin I assumed that I had picked up a damaged copy, that somehow the cover had torn off.  Alas, it was the entire book, all of about 20 pages of it.  What was the content?  Basically, each page was akin to a full page ad for one of the other books, with a short paragraph of text.  Oh, I thought, a funky marketing flyer disguised as a book that they probably give away.  No, nothing of the sort.  On the back cover was the retail price, $19.99.   Now, I realize the dollar has fallen relative to the Euro, but...

Is this old news?  I haven't been browsing in a while.  Was that book really meant to be sold?  Now the 30 yrs of D&D coffee table book looked interesting by comparison.

I found it online.  It’s called “Dungeon Survival Guide.”  It is 64 pages. (I guess I meant it felt like it was about 20 sheets of paper inside the covers.)  Okay, it has 32 sheets of paper.  OMG!  It’s really being sold for $19.99.  There’s not even any randomly generated ‘crunch’ in it, and only a smidgen of fluff.  Mostly it’s just art.  It seems to only fill a niche of ‘explaining’ to someone what D&D is.  Yet, why not a smaller brochure (take one they’re free) at the store counter?  I guess this is what they mean about getting rid of the stuff that’s not fun.  The prospects of a good 4th edition are looking rather slim, literally.

quote from the sept. review of the dungeon survival guide:

Last month, you got a look at the back cover text from this 64-page illustrated guide to dungeon adventuring. As I mentioned, this book is aimed at novice adventurers interested in the world of fantasy, wizards, knights, dragons, and monsters -- this is, for all intents and purposes, a companion to Practical Guide to Dragons and Practical Guide to Monsters. When you get a look inside, you'll understand a little more of what you can expect -- an almost nostalgic look at the history of D&D 's dungeons, with an entertaining spin for the curious and newly interested. Take a look at the Introduction.
these books do not have gaming info in them, they are for beginners to read about the game. I almost bought this thinking it was a conversion of the AD&D dungeoneers survival guide.

Thanks, realmaster. Let's split up!!!!!

I was at my FLGS yesterday and as soon as I walked in, Emmitt was like, "Check out this lame new book we got in. We're never gonna be able to sell these."
It was the Dungeon Survival Guide.

The year: 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Man's civilization is cast in ruin!
Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn...
A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super science, and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword against the forces of evil.
He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

Well at least it's usable with 4th edition.

It seems like we've got a few of these art books recently.  There was a dragon one released not too long ago wasn't there?

There was a dragon book, but if it's the one I'm thinking of, it had some decent fiction in them, and they were set in a variety of settings (including one in the Magic 'verse.)

The Dragon book I remeber was a thin hardbound book, not too expensive I think.  It just covered the evil Chromatic and good Mettalic dragons.

You know, I keep thinking that after the new design team gets done with D&D 4e, D&D won't stand for Dungeons and Dragons anymore, because well, that's just not fun. It's old and stuffy. - Originally Posted by BabWryter on Kenzerco.com

Nope, try again.

I did try a product search on the Wotc website, putting in Dragon gets quite a few results...

I'm pretty sure the book is at least a year old, maybe older.  It's a very thin hardcover and it was under $20.

I'd bet that's the one, it was part of the Knights of the Silver Dragon series, wasn't it?

Thanks it's one of my favorites too.  I think many of my early Vtm games were partialy inspired by Big Trouble.

Are we discussing the rip off book at the stores right now? The one where you pay to see the advertisements for adventures. I would never burn a book but I really thought about that one.

Well that must be their clever marketing sceme then.  You have to buy the book to burn it after all.
