02/07/2008 11:35 AM

news to me....

http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/12037.html

February 07, 2008

Entering a new game category, Upper Deck announced today at the Spielwarenmesse International Toy Fair Nurnberg in Germany that it will launch the World of Warcraft Miniatures Game, a collectible miniatures game, later this year.ÂFour SKUs have been announced:Âa fixed two-player Starter Set, a randomized Deluxe Starter Set, Booster Packs, and a giant-size Onyxia Raid Set that allows the player to either play against an automated Onyxia or play the black dragon.

The lead game designer is Justin Gary, who's worked on other games for Upper Deck.ÂSculptors include Jacques-Alexandre Gillois from France, Juan Navarro Perez from Spain, Stefan Niehues from Germany and Steve Saunders from the U.S.ÂPaint detailing is by Studio McVey.

Each mini will come on a removable base, so it can be used both as a game piece and a collectible.

Game play will include standalone raid and dungeon scenarios.ÂPlayers will be able to either battle individually or cooperatively against teams of players or the game itself.

Upper Deck is planning major organized play support, including in-store tournaments, Darkmoon Faire events, and National and World Championship tournaments.Â

Minotaurs/Taurens should be about the same size. Trolls should be too, as Orcs could be used as Ogres... it might be worth checking out.

Either boosters are 49.95 a piece or else those figs are not going to be close to as well painted. Looks cool and I would be very excited if they matched DnD scale at all. Most should be usable as larges though. I like WoW so I will definatly check these out. The most exciting part is hopefully they make WotC pick up a bit on the painting, sculpting and game support areas. They aren't terrible at any but some healthy competition is good for us players.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

I've created a fansite to support the release of WarCraft Minis and it can be seen at http://WarCraftMinis.com. There is little original content here so far, but this domain will be the place for WarCraft Miniature fans to share their photos, stories, and everything WoW Miniatures Game!

Scaling, the cartoony look, and oversized weaponry will very likely make me not get any Warcraft minis.Â

Agreed Corim, especially with the cartoony look. No real interest here for me.

The year: 1994. From out of space comes a runaway planet, hurtling between the Earth and the Moon, unleashing cosmic destruction! Man's civilization is cast in ruin!
Two thousand years later, Earth is reborn...
A strange new world rises from the old: a world of savagery, super science, and sorcery. But one man bursts his bonds to fight for justice! With his companions Ookla the Mok and Princess Ariel, he pits his strength, his courage, and his fabulous Sunsword against the forces of evil.
He is Thundarr, the Barbarian!

The scale seems a bit too large. It'll mean few figures per booster at high cost, probably, plus the incompatibility... I'm interested in seeing how they do Lady Onyxia (the black dragon) in this scale...

Yes, cartoony is no good. It seems like Desert of Desolation was starting to go a little bit in that direction. Hope that Wizards remembers that these little plastic figures are actually toys for big boys and girls.

No way I'd buy any at that price/mini ratio.

List price is, in fact, $14.99 for a booster of 3, 2 'epic' figures per case of 16 boosters.

The Deluxe starters (come out a month after the normal ones) will each have a loot card from the WoW card game for in-computergame loot.

I was at GTS and saw Onyxia, not sure if she's ever going to be a production figure. We just got the pdfs with the more detailed information today...

Heh.   That about sums it up for me too.  Although if that Dragon 'mini' makes it into production it will, at a guess, go for $100+.  I doubt it would drop in price as they will most likely make it a 'limited release'.
