ok Point Defense states that it is the first in the sequence of attacks but doesn't specify damage.

This makes for a huge diffence on the way that the game goes.

Does point defense damage resolve in the damage phase ?

Or

Does Point Defense damage apply immediatly after so as to deny the incoming fighters a chance to attack ?

Since the Attack and Damage Resolution phases are separate and distinct, I would say that point defence resolves in the damage phase. While this doesn't prevent the fighters from making their attacks, it does free up the PD ship to make it's main attacks elsewhere.
