| I remember a time when people would get all touchy and upset whenever 4th edition was mentioned and the threads were almost always eventually locked.
Now we have a forum for it....Weird.

| | I also said a loud NO to 4th Edition. Too much material for 3.5 and most would just use their "old" books for years and years. | | Please donate BLOOD at http://www.monstersgame.co.uk/ac=vid&vid=11018554 Champion Of Kaz the Minotaur Knight of ALL Draconians. | | It will happen at some point. That's a fact. Having it happen too soon (and 2008 is too soon for me and my 35+ 3.0/3.5 WotC books) is quite irritating to me. | | Leaning towards giving 4e the Digitus Impudicus Champion of the Spider Eater with rider. A lot of the newer books reference the minis handbook already. The marshal, favored soul and warmage have made it into the extened core classes. Swift actions are now core. Even the spells that first appeared in the book are now in common use in other books.

| Realize that everything that we all say about 4th ed has been said about 3rd ed.
If they waited until a new addition was absolutely needed it would be too late. Not to say that another couple of years wouldn't be appreciated, but sooner or later a 4th ed will come out. | | Completed trades: blackthorne, Drakkengi,Thorgrin, Ironfist Boulderbender x2, ckissee, nasamonkey, Username, Star, Ace13 x3, emontedodger x2, Drconveyor, church, Joeyb, Sir Bozak The Damned, Xeromod, the other guy x2, Qucalion of Celene, Dagaron x2, berus316, qillan_dvra, AshloreDarkShadow

Not that everything is balanced, but, 3.5 is still, by far, the best D&D product that's been produced.
If you change too much, it's likely to get worse, not better.

It is a tricky balancing act, I agree. However, if you are too afraid of change, you become so hidebound that your market changes and leaves you behind as it evolves and changes. Look at what happened in the 90s. D&D was essentially the same game as in the 70s and 80s, yet players wanted more. They wanted more flexibility, more choices, and they got it with World of Darkness. Many people were leaving D&D because it wasn't meeting the needs of a changing game world. Luckily, 3rd ed turned out great, mainly from an attitude of recognizing what elements of the game had to be kept to keep D&D, D&D and which needed to be thrown out (like THAC0).
If they are going to make a true new edition, the worse thing you can do is not be willing to change. This is not to say you have to change a lot, just be willing to change everything and anything if need be else you've put so many restrictions that you are doing half the job. In the transition to 3rd ed, they were willing to do that and saw what didn't need to be changed.
Now, personally I think all 4th ed is going to be is really 3.75. It will clean up and restate the rules to incorporate new ideas, new rules that really should be core to the game. It may even change the things that are cumbersome and pull away from game play. But truly it will be a correction.Â
With that said, a true 4th ed is coming. It has to. Otherwise the game is going to die, and I don't want to see that happen for a long time. And if it's the same people making that game who gave us 3rd ed, I thin we have a very good chance of having a good edition. As you said, they gave us the best edition of the game so far.

| | I look forward to 4th ed. 3.5 has become stale... its time for change. I remember the first day 3.0 came out. My group bought a single copy of the players handbook, and we all took turns making charactes. It was so much fun. Times are changing... | I'm a dinosaur still using 2nd edition. I think coming out with new editions only hurts D&D. 3rd edition seems fine to me it's so much different from 2nd it feels like a new game. Instead of scraping editions and no longer supporting them, I feel they should turn out more new content.
Instead what you will see them do is just release all the game products they have but just updated to 4th edition instead of new adventures.

You're not alone. I even suspect we're quite a few on this forum And I've been told some are still using 1st edition

Probably, as they did/do it for 3rd edition (see return to temple of elemental evil, the recent castle ravenloft adventure, and the forthcoming demonweb pits, undermountain and castle greyhawk adventures... Not even talking of the 3.5 adaptations of tomb of horrors, white plume mountain and others, freely downloadable on wizards.com) Not a good idea for 4E IMO as they'd better discard the old forgotten realms and create a brand new original setting, but easier to do... | | Vindicated Champion of the PSEUDODRAGON (Unhappy) vindicated champion of the DRYAD Against the giants called shot : huge cloud giant female Demonweb called shot : ghost
