| Hey all,
I think this forum is not really worth the space at the moment. All of the thread that Host has started related to rumours that came out at the start of August, before Gen Con took place.
There were no announcements of 4E or anything related to 4E at gen Con, infact it was pretty much confirmed that nothing could come of 4E in 2007 at all, as the product catalogue is full of 3x material.
Gary Gygax is not in the know about 3E anymore, and has repeatedly commented that he does not like the system in general, and he does not play the game. I would not use him as a source or authority on any changes or the imminent appearance of 4E.
Both Charles Dancy and Monte Cook are outside the WotC loop now, no longer working there. Their comments provide some insight, but tell us nothgin about WotC plans.
These rumours were pretty well hashed over at ENWorld in August, and have pretty much died since then, as nothing else came of them. No confirmations, no evidence at all. It is all vapour at present.
When 3E launched news of it appearing was widespread for over a year before hand.
So, go back to gaming and ignore the dead rumours.

This implies that 4E is being actively discussed if not worked on by WotC. This agrees with Monte Cook's instincts:
Moreover, I know the kinds of products that you release before a new edition, and the kinds of things you post to the Internet and say at conventions when you're working on a new edition. And so based on all that, my wild guess is 2008, with an announcement in 2007. That said, I think it maybe could come as early as 2007, with an announcement this year. | |

| I have to agree with Omand on this. No news is good news about 4th edition.
I followed the threads about this at EN world avidly and I didn't see anything that supports the idea that 4th edition is coming soon. Lets let the rumors die. | |

| Just one final comment from me and then I will let people post as they like on the topic without my lurking or posting.
Host, I am not sure if you are aware, but Gary Gygax is Col Pladoh over at ENWorld and he posts there regularly. I would imagine (although I cannot say for certain), that any news he has heard about 4E was gained from all of the threads that exploded at ENWorld just prior to Gen Con this year. All the comments I have ever seen from Gary about 3E indicate that he is not consulted about the direction of the game or WotC plans, and that he personally does not like where the game has gone in terms of development.
That's all from me. Speculate as you like, but I will believe it when there is something tangible out there, not just repeated stale rumours with no substance.

Even if you're right though, we still don't know anything except unfounded rumors. I have no problem at all with speculating about stuff but we need a basis on which to speculate.
It's like when there is a new minis preview and people attempt to extrapolate skirmish stats from a couple obscure paragraphs. Why??????

| People seem to forget that not everyone can lurk/read every message board about D&D or it's spin offs....  While I have read a good deal abou 4E, including the Monte Cook essay, the Ryan dancy essay, Eric Noah's original report, his repudiation of what he wrote based on new info, etc. etc. there is kernels of info to be gleaned, and I think it IS worth hashing around at message boards other than EnWorld.  For me the most telling is the Monte Cook article. He has left the RPG trade for now, and he says that he had planned to for some time, if you read some of the other articles about the transition from 3.0 to 3.5, you'll find that your better to make a clean break, and jump onto the new edition. As he has no SRD to work with for 4e, he's going to pursue other activities. Who needs the Complete book of Flumphs? The type of 3 tier books (law of dimishing # of people who will purchase a given book, First tier are core, everyone buys, 2nd tier are sub core, the base complete books might be an example...) or ever 4 tier demonstrate that 3.5 may be running near the end of its development cycle. That Mike Mearls was brought in while other responsibilites seem to shift into the background. That WotC notified people that WF would be THE con for D&D info (i.e. 4E gets released in February of 08, and is announced in Feb 07) doesn't contract any othe rumor, and infact is in line with the thought of "we'd hear about it if it were 12 months out".  Whether 4E is a good or bad thing, we all know it is coming eventually. Whether it will be good or bad is the subject for another debate.  Pat E | |

There's no point working people up into a frenzy of speculation over material that has already been hashed out on EN World months and months ago. | |

| Frankly, what did people expect ? Even if Monte Cook, Gary Gygax or Ryan Dancey and Eric Noah are not part of WotC, they still know many many people inside WotC and every third-party editor... These guys are definitely "in the know".
