| As people have griped/complained/dicussed/etc. 4th edition, I've seen most discussion center on the cost of acquiring new books and much speculation on new rules. However, I was thinking that this will be a perfect opprtunity to introduce a shift in art direction. We already know that the 4e troll is slightly different (long, aquiline nose instead of 3.X's droopy one). Pictures of green dragons also so a slight change, with a long, pointed nose. Even the beholder on the D&D website looks slightly different, but lore says that beholders come in a wide variety of looks, so that might not be a change.
So, what are your hopes with regards to D&D artwork? I know one thing that will make or break the art for me: I hope they avoid the glut of cookie-cutter Wayne Reynolds art. If I see one more PC-type with gritted teeth or another lipless monster, I'm gonna scream.

| More traditional fantasy artwork.
An elimination of the "comic book" look to the art.
Keep monsters lloking like they traditionally do. Slight variations only.

What it really did was set a specific style for all products, so you didn't end up with the 1e/2e deal where the "look" of a beholder was all over the place. | |

Man I hope not, that would be a major turn off for me. Fortunately the troll miniatures doesn't seem like its going that route, so with luck the anime infleunce won't be to pronounced. | |

I have a had time wrapping my head around the idea of a genre that is strickly limited to medieval Europe being called "Fantasy".

I'm not interested in getting into a debate/argument about it. It's how I feel. That's enough. I'm fully aware that D&D has contained classical mythological (as well as from other sources) creatures from its very beginnings.

No problem with the various sources of creatures. What I want is that they each keep a classical graphic style. I wouldn't want the pegasus to turn into a my little pony with wings, or the new ogre look like Shrek, even if the new young players WotC hopes to get should love it.

| I liked the artwork of 3.5 more than first or second addition. If anime takes hold I will stop buying mini's immediately and the books I purchase would be very likely done as well. I hate to admit it but I often buy D&D books according to some of the cool pictures inside. Anime would be the death of 4th edition D&D for me without a doubt. What I want to know is are all of my supplement books and third edition adventure now out dated or will they still work with just some slight changes being needed? I have an entire bookshelf full and if they are now unuseable it will definitely change my buying habits in the future. I use to buy the books just so I had them in the future if I needed them. I now will not buy unless I must have it now!!! Back to the original question: I want realistic looking art and minis not cartoonish looks. The more realistic it looks the better, and creepy is always good! Look at the Lord of the Rings movies, it was fantasy but it seemed real and believable, this is what I want! | |

| It seems to me that producing more books that were heavy on fluff and light on crunch would make for more compatible (across editions) books. For instance, FR books that just focussed on the setting and not the crunchy stat bits. Instead, what they could do would be to make the crunchy bits available online. (free and without hitches if you buy the hardback book) They could then update the crunch whenever a new edition is released.
What this would do is make a single set of FR books theoretically compatible with any edition of D&D.
However....................and we all know this is true
They would still get to a point where they would want to "reset" FR by releasing a new set of books.  and then we'd all be right back where we started. | |

On the other hand, the dragon looks anime, but unfortunately not anime *enough*, it is a strange mix and I don't like it.
I, too, like the more traditional fantasy/myth artwork.

| I actuelly like the beholder which you can check out on the Wizards D&D homepage. The Beholder mini from Gen Con is awful however. I think it is more a fact of a crappy mini, than a general crappy 4th Edition Beholder.

But is it more or less inconvenient than the 3E black dragon horns, which effectively prevent him from eating normally -if not eating at all, and are the main reason why the species is disappearing (proof is that the mini is very rare and expensive) ? That is the question.

But we have seen several depictions of the green dragon with the nose spike, and in the recent article about monster design which featured a battle with a dragon, the accompanying black and white drawing was a dragon with a nose spike. The combat description never says what type or color dragon is featured, but the dragon breathes fire, so it is presumably a red unless in 4e the type of breath changes for the chromatic dragons. So it seems likely the accompanying drawing was for a red dragon with a similar nose spike to the green dragon's. | |
