 | | 01/12/2008 8:15 AM | Alert | | I'm very excited about the new Chaosium Basic roleplaying. I just ordered the "beta" limited release they are offering. The book contains pretty much all of their rules over the year in one compendium. As well as a handy campaign sheet so players know what rules you are using.
Then there's the upcoming Secrets of the Surface World, for Exiles Hollow Earth Expedition. This book expands the pulp adventure rpg with rules for Mad Science, Magic and Psycic powers. I'm pretty much a fan of any game that involves Dinosaurs and stomping Nazi butt. This game does a great job of it.
4th edition D&D.... I'm pretty much over it. I don't like the direction the game is going in. Most of those teasers just alienated me and reinforced my decision not too pick it up. The changes in cosmology and art are annoying. The thing that ticks me off right now is how they are splitting the core rules into a series of splat books. | | Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing. | | 01/12/2008 1:50 PM | Alert | I will be playing 3.5 and 2nd by the looks of it the archons to replace the elementals just sucks in my eyes..sorry. The change in classes and the change in core races I'm not much for at all. Also the whole no core books but many source books is just a plain money grab in my eyes. And I agree 3.5 was terrible for that also. The new look on many of the monsters in 4th edition I'm also not much for and the lack of frost giants and elementals in the main monster book just spells not D&D to me. | | 01/15/2008 12:38 PM | Alert | I've grown tired by it all. Been spending a lot of time over at the WotC 4E forums. It seems that the changes are welcomed by a great many people and WotC seems to be tapping into that. It's disturbing to watch them fundamentally change D&D into something I didn't want and didn't ask for. I feel like I'm trying to hold back the ocean with a broom. Oh well, I always have previous editions of D&D.
Sucks to be left behind though, I will admit. | | The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner and RPG designer from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute and RPGA certified DM named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark and THAC0. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons, D&D every night. In the spring we'd make meat helmets for LARP. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag, forced to walk the walk of a thousand four siders, and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe, which was very handy for D&D. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles for LARP. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

 | | 01/15/2008 1:50 PM | Alert | | My sleep quality has been poor of late too. Anyways, that was my tounge in cheek answer. What it comes down to for me, is that there are plently of other RPGs on the market. If it's any consolation, the 4e Ocean Archon will be wearing armour and make it easier to hold it back with a broom... ;)
Ok, me? I'm hating it (cause I'm a hater). I was looking for simpler rules, not a massive overhaul. There are things I like or don't mind, but this just feels like it's not D&D anymore. Sure, it's a fantasy game, but it's not D&D. Some of my buddies are switching over, I'll give it a try with them (not buying books), but with my core group I'll probably stick with 3.5 for a long while. Since we homebrew, there is no shortage of source material anyways.
As far as minis. For me it is still about the online interface. If the 4.0 online interface is good, then switching over will be easier. If it is not, then really what's the point. I have tons of 3.5 source material to last me for years and my Code Monkey stuff is still functional.

 | | 01/16/2008 2:39 PM | Alert | I'm waiting and seeing still. I have both of the Wizards:presents books, and I like what I see in each of them. But that doesn't mean I'll like the whole game. I really need to see some cool online options at this point, because some of the stuff seems not as appealing.
They need to show me that adding digital content was worth the overhaul.

I'm actually interested in reading these books. Not at all interested in paying for them though. I think they are a waste of money (my opinion, please don't take offense anyone)
I think buying these books sends the wrong message to WotC. That message is "we'll buy anything you give us" (again, my opinion folks) However, I'm not about to tell anyone how or on what to spend their money. Only that they won't be getting any of mine for these two books.
With DI still being free at this point they could have taken the content of both of these books and put them up as PDFs, so anyone could read them for free. | | The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? | | 01/30/2008 8:00 PM | Alert | I guess I'm sticking to my guns and saying that I won't be switching. My group have purchased a lot of 3.5 stuff, and like most everyone else, hate to see that money spent go to the wayside. Some ideas of 4E look interesting, but not interesting enough to go spend a pile of cash on new books. The online game thing does nothing for me either. WoTC also kind of pissed me off by continuin to sell 3.5 books even though 4E was in the offing. Continual cash grab = me not interested. | | When the levee breaks, mama you got to move.... | |

Mine were free asa a delegate. Would I have bought them? Doubtful, not for $20 a piece. But if I owned a game shop, I'd have ordered whatever preorders, plus one, marked Store on the front, for readers. It's a good marketing/sneak peek book. I wish everyone could read it.

A buddy of mine bought both books and I was able to read small bits of Worlds & Monsters. It was actually quite disturbing to read some of the design philosophy stuff. More evidence that I am no longer in WotC's D&D demographic.

 | | 02/01/2008 6:16 AM | Alert | I was very excited when it was first announced. Since then a few things have made me sad, a few things made me happy, and a few have made me excited. Over all I am anxious to see the final release. The most comfortable part is knowing that even if its awful I still have a ton of 3.5 stuff to last me for forever.
The recent sneak peak of the Forgotten realms really made me sad. I would of rather they kept things different but just updated to 4E than pigeon hole the realms into the 4E cosmology. But so far most every thing else is looking pretty good. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! | | 02/03/2008 3:14 PM | Alert | I have a campaign in progress, with a huge pile of characters (I have about 10 players and each has 3 or 4 characters), and they're all different levels (about 5th to 25th) and I have all kinds of plans that I still need to take care of. I imagine this will take another couple years to finish.
I have no desire to try to turn all that into 4e, so I'm keeping all that in 3.5
However, I will learn 4e as it comes out, and as soon as that campaign is done, I'll be switching.
