I started thinking about 4th ed back when they came out with D20 modern. The core classes being built from the core attributes was interesting. It seemed like this was going to be the course 4.0 would follow.

My expectations were that it would be a streamlined version of 3.5... but, it's a whole new system. | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. I thought that it wouldn't be the radical change it is turning out to be. I was completely blindsided and saddened by that.
I agree with greyhaze

That's very interesting and something I hadn't thought of. Maybe because I only played D20 modern for a very short time. | | The details of my life are quite inconsequential... very well, where do I begin? My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner and RPG designer from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute and RPGA certified DM named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark and THAC0. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. My childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons, D&D every night. In the spring we'd make meat helmets for LARP. When I was insolent I was placed in a burlap bag, forced to walk the walk of a thousand four siders, and beaten with reeds- pretty standard really. At the age of twelve I received my first scribe, which was very handy for D&D. At the age of fourteen a Zoroastrian named Vilma ritualistically shaved my testicles for LARP. There really is nothing like a shorn scrotum... it's breathtaking- I highly suggest you try it.

 | | 05/02/2008 6:58 AM | Alert | I hoped it would be a simplified version of 3.5 that rebalanced the classes and removed things that unneedingly slowed down the game. Also I wanted them to make combat more interesting for all the classes but also allows for all the classes to be useful outside of combat.
From playing in demos and such it's pretty clear they have done most of these things. Maybe they took it a bit further than I would of liked but I will reserve that judgement for a few months after I've played it for a bit. The changes are too large to really judge them superficially and do any kind of justice. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! For me the D20 modern classes seemed too generic to be interesting. It's probably just a polishing difference, but for just changing the class names to things like Soldier, spy, celebrity, Hacker, etc would of been more interesting for me. It would of added some compexity and restrictions though which is probably why the avoided it.

Mechanically, 4E has some similarities.
The flavor was a rather radical shift I wouldn't have expected, though. But Flavor is usually a lot more optional than mechanics.

I would agree with this to a point, but when it radically affects the look and existance of stuff that we have yet to get a mini for, then it's not quite as optional. | | 4dv3ntur3 It's totally bonzer!!!!!

I would agree with this to a point, but when it radically affects the look and existance of stuff that we have yet to get a mini for, then it's not quite as optional. Also, they are hardwiring their new fluff into every book and supplement they release, making ignoring it that much more difficult.

 | | 05/05/2008 10:00 AM | Alert | I expected some big changes in some areas and some refining in others. We seemed to get big changes everywhere and while a little intimidated by what we've learned I am still intrigued by a lot of the stuff.
The fluff changes seem to be pretty interesting to me as well. There is stuff that I won't really give much thought and whole bunch of stuff that won't make it into my game at all (Teiflings, Dragonborn etc....)
I expect that people will end up jumping ship eventually, no matter how much they say they won't. I however am a guy who believes that change is good, and even good just for change sake.
My biggest complaint about 4E is that I've got a bunch more books to read and learn and then try to teach to my cave man friends... (I couldn't spell neanderthal) | | Champion of the Aspect of Gruumsh Nemesis of Gnomes and Warforged

 | | 05/05/2008 7:23 PM | Alert | 3.5 was pretty new to me before the announcement. I never really jumped in and started actually playing until about a year beforehand. I was too busy enjoying 3.5 to even imagine that there would ever be a 4e.
When 4e was announced, I was excited. A game that I was already enjoying was going to be streamlined? Made more accessible? Playable online in an intuitive and 3D environment? It was a dream come true!
I snapped up both Wizards Presents books. Even if somehow it ended up being as bad as all the doomsayers claimed, some insight into the design process would be helpful. I read through the books, and liked what I saw. Some things were very different than I remembered. It took a while to get used to them, but I could see why the changes were made. And I grew to like them.
Fast-forward to today and I'm highly anticipating June 6th. One friend that I've been separated from and another friend I've never bet in person are lined up to play under me. I've already got several plans in place. I want to experience 4e.
Now, a disclaimer. I may be positive on the whole here, but it's because 4e is opening far more doors for me than it's closing. I do have problems with it (New Worg? Ugh. Diagonals are all 1? Don't care for it, but I see why they did it.), but I'm confident that I'll be able to move past its flaws and enjoy the good things. | | Completed trades: Brenigin, desiderata | |
