So, there I was, paging through Keep on the Shadowfell. I stumbled upon an entry for the G-Cube, and something struck me as odd.

Translucent: The Gelatinous Cube is invisible until seen.

There was more to it than that, including a Perception DC to see it, but think about it. "Invisible until seen."

How do you see that which is invisible? How does it lose its invisibility once somebody sees it? This paradox provided quite a bit of amusement for me.

Quite the conundrum.

It makes sense, though. Most transparent objects are not invisible, but function as such until they are pointed out/noticed. For example, birds have a tendency to try and fly through windowpanes. The windowpanes are not invisible, but the birds certainly aren't aware of their existence until they smack into them. An adventurer looking down a corridor in a dimly-lit dungeon is hardly likely to notice that the edges of the hallway are a bit fuzzy (unless they're Perceptive) and might, like the birds, smack into the side before realizing there's something there.

Once you've noticed the 10 foot moving jell-O it's hard to see how you could have missed seeing it in the first place. Unfortunately, you didn't notice it until it had smacked you upside the head

Invisible until seen. Hilarious.

Also, incorporeal until touched, and silent until heard.

This reminds me of the description of the G-Cube in the old 1e module Bone Hill. The cube occupied a hallway, which the DM described as "hazy" due to the warping of light as it passed through the cube. The lead members of our party proceeded to walk right into it...

"Invisible until seen" makes perfect sense here, since "invisible" is a keyword, a specific condition. I'm not bothered a whit by the wording, and I'm an editor by profession.

I never said it was incorrect or anything. I just think "invisible until seen" sounds funny. Taking it out of context makes it quite paradoxical.

Agreed, it's fine in the context. But out of context, it can be pretty funny.
