I'd like to put a stipulation on this topic, I really don't want to hear that the 4th ed Rakasha is lousy or weak or that 4th ed is lousy. Frankly I don't care if you don't like it, it is your choice. This is not a topic to bash 4th ed. Bashing Rakasha's as a whole is fine, but I'd like this to just be related to helping people with campaigns involving them.

Do you think the new Rakashas make good villains? See I am going to be running a campaign where the bad guy is trying to resurrect a primordial. I've decided that for our world that the primordials were actually sealed away in various areas, and one day I had this thought of the earth primordial being turned into a temple itself with various parts of its "being" sealed away in it and in other places (think Castlevania 2or3 where you actually had to put Dracula together before killing him). My only problem is I can not really find a fitting antagonist to get the ball rolling. I've thought of using hobgoblins to have a small piece of the primordial temple on their being to be the adventure hook, but it didn't flow in my head. So after flipping through the MM I came across the Rakasha Noble, and now Im thinking that with some of their flavor changes it might work. Since they are emphasizing the vanity and greed of Rakasha's I can't help but think that if there was a temple that was once a "living" being then that would escalate his status to no end. Any thoughts? Do you think that the rakasha would work? And, finally do you feel the MM handled them well enough to make them a viable candidate for your PC's to fight?

Please no trashing 4th ed, let's try to keep this topic civil.

If I kill off a 5th level party with only 3 kobolds that were based off Spartans, have I failed or succeeded at my job as a DM?

I've always enjoyed using Rakshasas as villians.  Ever since a 2nd ed adventure from Dungeon Magazine.  It had a trio masqurading as a monks, while they were searching for a powerfull artifact on the temple grounds.  I like the idea of the living temple or ruins, it sounds very creepy and cool.

I don't realy see the noble as a critter to "fight" the players.  Rather a skillfull manipulator arranging events to force the players to do his dirty work.

Pathetic Earthlings. Hurling your bodies out into the void - without the slightest inkling of who or what is out here. If you had known anything about the true nature of the universe - anything at all - you would have hidden from it in terror.

That's where I was thinking of heading with it as a manipulator, my fear though is that I will need to make one or two outstanding bodyguards, and even though this does happen in alot of media the bodyguard or the Second in Command is much more memorable I am hoping to avoid that. Though that would probably be more on my abilities as a DM as opposed to what my PC's thought.

Raksasha's are Shapechangers still right?  I'd consider having the Noble position himself so the PC's are indebted to him and see him as a parton.  As far as a second in Command how about a Doppleganger Assasin?  In terms of big beefy bodyguards, they could be either invisible or on another plane untill the Noble needed him.

javasquirrel, what you describe is eerily similar to Eberron's basic set-up. The Rakshasa Rajahs are the primordials, basically, and they've been imprisoned for nigh on one million years. The lesser Rakshasas, called the Lords of Dust, are working to release them.

It works extremely well.

While I have mixed feelings on how the Rakshasa has been changed, it is still undoubtedly one of the top major villains I have used at every level. I would sometimes give it a class just to make its spellcasting even nastier. Rakshasas are undoubtedly on top of my favorites.

I always try to send through delivery confirmation, and I expect the same. It's only 55 cents extra, so it's just a little more than a pay phone call, so just do it for the Kai. I prefer to trade with people in the US and Canada, sorry everyone else.

I enjoy using Rakshasas as BBEG's, but with a nice twist. Typically, they let someone else be "in charge" (Corrupted Cloud giants, last time I used it) and they work within the organization from a number of guises to really run things This makes them excellent lastiing villains, because they suvive the killing fo the puppet leader, escape, and start over again. Plost look similar, and symbols get reused, and it gives a creepy sort of never defeated vibe to the players.

I have always loved Rakshasa's! It's such a great creature to use as a villian, especially if you want to totally set the PC's up for something. Have the Rakshasa shapechange into someone else, hire them to perform a deed, and when the PC's go looking for their reward, the impersonated NCP (quite rightly) has no clue what they are talking about! Hilarity ensues, bwahahaha! :-P

Well, I glad to see that their are people still loving the Rakasha, and I thank you guys for helping (i'm not done with this thread please don't stop posting :) ). You guys have defintely pushed me over to using the R.Noble as my main bad guy....until the PC's awaking the earth primodial (hence referred to as Gaea until a better name comes my way). I really like the doppleganger BG and think I will employ him, but I am also considering ripping off the new Hellboy and making an Albino Eladrin Ranger...yeah I know I'm ripping it off but you know what the Albino elf dude looks like he can kick butt, so why not.

There is a great history/background take on Rakashas in the current Pathfinder series of modules. Crimson Throne.

I've never been that found of them in the past but the fluff in this piece has got me a fair bit more interested in them.
