Well, I made it to level 2 last night and finally got my first utility spell, I say the singular, cause you can only use one of the two you do get each day. I feel much better. My magic item was a darkleaf robe +1. Having some defensive capabilities is a huge relief, I hated only being able to blast things.

I look forward to being able to diversify in the coming levels, I really feel like the massive limitations are behind me for now.

The fact that you get your first utility power at level 2 made me hesitant of starting from 1st level right in the beginning of starting to read about characters. Is there really any point to start from there, or do characters feel too restrained there? Is it just a 'learn to play 4e' -level? Or do you think trading places of one of the at-will powers and 2nd level utility power would feel better?

I'd feel better as a player to get a utility spell at level 1. I don't know if it screws up the power curve or not, but I hated having only blasting variation spells to choose from - it felt really limited, like I wasn't allowed to build my character with personality.

Of course there's a point to starting off first level! Most of the at will powers have special effects that are defensive in a roundabout way. The Ray of Frost Spell Slows an enemy for 1 round--that means they can only get two squares closer to you. You could keep a big enemy away from you almost indefinately, if you hit often enough. And the Thunderweave spell is awesome for that reason, too! If you are surrounded by enemies, you can blast a bunch of them back, possibly enough for the defenders to intercede, or even for you to be able to run away w/o recourse. Ray of Enfeeblement is a great spell nail the big bad guy with so he doesn't want to use his buff attack right away. And Most of the Daily's have great uses as well--Sleep, while only having a less than 25% chance of knocking someone out, can hamper a large amount of enemies--great for retreats, or even just so the party can repositiont hemselves into better positions for the battle.

I've used all of those spells, other than tactical positioning, it felt like little in the options department.

Well, wizards do not have a plethora of abilities to choose from initally, so yes, there will always be some overlap. Wizards do get more spells now--they just are a smidgeon more limited in what they can choose. i was merely making the point that being a controller--i.e., tactical combat--is inherently defensive.

I don't see how switching the Level 1 Dailies and the level 2 Utilities would unbalance the game, especially since most utilities ARE dailies.  that might make an interesting variant.

I am hoping that they will release a Spells book, like the Martial handbook coming out, that opens up alot more possiblities for starting off. As much as I enjoy 4th ed so far, I will be happy when the next couple books open up more options.

If I kill off a 5th level party with only 3 kobolds that were based off Spartans, have I failed or succeeded at my job as a DM?
