For my little group, who are, like me, just learning 4E, what would be the best adventure to start with? Keep on the Shadowfell? The Kobold Hall adventure in the back of the DMG? Or should I design a quick one shot to get them to level 2 and then play the Talon Pass from Free RPG Day?

I'm just eager to start playing LOL

the Keep on the Shadowfell seemed to end in a LOT of TPK's (including my party). It's probably better to run something a little less devastating :-)

Keep on the Shadowfell is good, slightly powerful. Make sure you have at least 4 players (5 is better)

Also, the statue encounter seemed to be the worst, so you may want to tone that one down.

I'm running KOTS now.  I've made many modifications to it, but I only have 3 players at the moment.  One player died in the first encounter and since then the players have picked up quite a bit of tactics and now are not having any trouble, and that's with encounters designed for 5.  Though, it could be that they are just better at tactics than me. :-P

Kobold Hall was a good 1st level adventure. My players pushed through in about 5 hours (with a good amount of roleplaying in Fallcrest). The encounters are tough but not overwhelming and the skull-skull room was hilarious (especially when the eladrin wizard teleported past the gate...).

Keep on the Shadowfell is OK for a 1st level party. If your players think tactically it is pretty balanced. If they're more the kick-down-the-door-and-whack types then some of the monster tactics may be overwhelming.

I ran the Kobold Hall from the DMG. I liked the adventure a lot and thought it was a nice "intro" to start out with. I would recommend it to most people.

4E printed adventures are designed for 5 player groups.  Even so I think Keep of the Shadowfell is a bit tough.

Things I would tweak for running it:

3 player party,   28-30 point buy and start them at level 2. Make sure they have a leader and some potions of healing and maybe a +1 weapon or two, especially for any caster types.

4 player party,  26 point buy,  start them at level 2, make sure they have a chance to buy some healing potions early on

5 players,  26 point buy,  things should run fairly smooth.

6 players:  standard 22 point buy

Also I haven't read anything but it seems like they are planning to have players have fairly easy access to buying potions and magic items.  If you restrict this then the adventures can get a bit harder.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

I'm finding the 26 point buy is the best idea.

You can also just mod. the encounters by subtracting off the xp and making it appropriate for 4 players.

Kobold Hall in the back of the DMG was the perfect starting adventure.  Interesting enough yet simple and helped you learn the rules, yet challenging at the end.  Everyone in our group really enjoyed it!  Plus it connects easily into Keep on the Shadowfell as they are in the same region which you will notice if you look on the area map.

We are now just beginning the Shadowfell adventure with two first level pc's and a second level pc.  Two people died and started new characters during Kobold Hall.  One of our deaths managed to fail three consecutive saves using the new method for dying, and it added a lot of drama by the time he made that crucial and deadly third roll.

I haven't had the pleasure of playing 4th Edition yet (I used to play back in the 80's before AD&D was out), but now I am getting back into it because my oldest son is a teenager now and getting into it. I ordered Keep on the Shadowfell and we have a bunch of Mini's, so I am going to check it all out when it gets here and see how it all is. I have read a lot of good things about it, so I am looking forward to playing again after a 20+ year break from the game. Haha. D.
