I am about to start a 4e campaign and am about to start buying up for the upcoming game sessions.

I am complete and total newbie when it comes to mini's so I thought I would come to the experts and bombard you with my stupid questions.

Stupid Question One
Is there any one best place to buy mini's? Or is it just a mixture of Auggies, Ebay, Miniatures Markets, trades etc? I live in Australia - does this make one place better than the others?

Stupid Question Two
Are there any other companies that release prepainted minis that are on the same scale as the D&D prepainted minis that would be usable for the game? Pro's and con's of these brands?

Stupid Question Three
Has there been any size changes in the DDM mini's or can I get some from any set and not have to worry about size issues?

Stupid Question Four
When I look on the WotC website they have a "Master List" but it only includes a few of the sets - what is the reason for this? Am I able to buy single minis from the older sets from stores - what is the availability like

Stupid Question Five
For the first adventure I have the following encounters, can you suggest suitable miniatures for these?

For those that I have already found a good fit (in my opinion) I will write that mini next to it, if you have different options that would be much appreciated. Only prepainted mini suggestions please. Also if you think that a particular suggestion will be very hard to track down can you please also indicate that.

Goblin Minions x12 (generic style goblin) Goblin Runner
Goblin Blackblade x2 (sneaky, assassin type goblin) Goblin Warrior
Goblin Sharpshooter x2 (any archery type goblin)
Goblin Hexer x1 (Spellcaster, Witchdoctor goblin)
Goblin Skullcleaver x1 (berserker, warrior goblin)
Kobold Minion x 6 Flamescorched Kobold
Kobold Skirmisher x1 (sneaky kobold)
Kobold Wild Mage x1 (spellcaster kobold)
Kobold Slinger x1 (archery kobold)
Vine Horror (humanoid vine/plant monster - a man made of vines basically)
Stirges x3
Ochre Jelly x2 (any ooze here will do fine - a Large and Medium would be fantastic)
Dire Boar x1
Skeleton x12
Zombie x12
Undead Shaman x1

I have cross-posted this in the 4e forum as well as I was not too sure where the best place for it was.

If anyone has any advice on what they did when they started a campaign and bought some mini's that would be great to hear.

Thankyou in advance for your assistance.

I am about to start a 4e campaign and am about to start buying up for the upcoming game sessions.

I am complete and total newbie when it comes to mini's so I thought I would come to the experts and bombard you with my stupid questions.

Stupid Question One

*I'd say Auggies, Ebay, and the Marketplace forum here. Stick to commons and uncommons, you can get alot for cheap. To save on shipping, buy in big bunches.

Stupid Question Two
Are there any other companies that release prepainted minis that are on the same scale as the D&D prepainted minis that would be usable for the game? Pro's and con's of these brands?

*Mage Knight if you want to pry the giant base off and re-glue the mini to a standard size base.  Also, Reaper has a FEW prepainted minis, about the same scale.

Stupid Question Three
Has there been any size changes in the DDM mini's or can I get some from any set and not have to worry about size issues?

*Well.... for the most part, D&D minis have been pretty close to the same scale. There are a few oddball minis that ended up either too big or too small. I think there was a slight increase in scale somewhere along the line, but I couldn't tell you which set the changeover happened. I dont think the difference is too noticable except for the oddballs I mentioned (Human Commoner, Mithral Hall Guard, etc.)

Stupid Question Four
When I look on the WotC website they have a "Master List" but it only includes a few of the sets - what is the reason for this? Am I able to buy single minis from the older sets from stores - what is the availability like.

*I dont know what you are talking about with "Master List". You can buy just about any mini from any set from Auggies, ebay, marketplace. Some rares from older sets will cost you though.

Stupid Question Five
For the first adventure I have the following encounters, can you suggest suitable miniatures for these?

For those that I have already found a good fit (in my opinion) I will write that mini next to it, if you have different options that would be much appreciated. Goblin Minions x12 (generic style goblin) Goblin Runner
Goblin Blackblade x2 (sneaky, assassin type goblin) Goblin Warrior [There is also a "Goblin Blackblade" from the War of the Dragon Queen set]
Goblin Sharpshooter x2 (any archery type goblin)
Goblin Hexer x1 (Spellcaster, Witchdoctor goblin)
Goblin Skullcleaver x1 (berserker, warrior goblin)
Kobold Minion x 6 Flamescorched Kobold
Kobold Skirmisher x1 (sneaky kobold)
Kobold Wild Mage x1 (spellcaster kobold)[I think there is a kobold sorcerer from Abberations set, not too expensive uncommon]
Kobold Slinger x1 (archery kobold)
Vine Horror (humanoid vine/plant monster - a man made of vines basically)[Stormrage shambler, BloodWar or Night Below set? cheap uncommon]
Stirges x3[Stirge, from WotDQ set, uncommon but expensive $4.00 each aprox]
Ochre Jelly x2 (any ooze here will do fine - a Large and Medium would be fantastic)[Ochre Jelly from Archfiends set is Large (and Rare), Ochre Jelly from the new AtG set is medium and common/cheap]
Dire Boar x1 [Dire Boar from Harbinger, rare, probably cost ya $12.00, or there's a boar in either Dungeons of Dread  or Desert of Desolation set, ugly but cheap]
Skeleton x12
Zombie x12
Undead Shaman x1

*I could respond to all of these but my memory of what mini is from what set is a little foggy. I'd say look thru the Gallery of each set on the wizards site. There are minis for everything you listed with the possible exception of "Undead Shaman". There is a Lich, and many other undead that could fill this roll though. Looking thru the Galleries, I'm sure you will find a suitable match.

The Other Thread

Since this thread is cross-posted (in two forums) and the other thread is getting almost all the discussion I'm locking this thread.
