| choke points! find a 2 wide or better 1 wide hall and draw them in. Pretty much every TPK against kobolds in Shadowfell I've read about the party didn't create a choke point.
Lesser effects that help are the fighters marking ability to take Attacks when they shift, and controllers effects that lock out certain types of movement.
Also, I'm not 100% sure but I don't think you can shift in difficult terrain. I will have to check to confirm, but if so fight them in a cluttered battlefield. | | Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested! | The first time my group ran through Shadowfell using the pre-gen characters, we had a rough time with the kobold shift ability---after going over the rules again we found out that we all were mixing in a few of the 3.5 rules into 4th edition-----make sure that anything that is not a shift draws an opportunity attack---that pesky 5 foot step now draws an opportunity attack--so the kobolds can shift to get close or shift after attacking
Also---if you happen to have 2 fighters in your group---get in that choke point and start using cleve---2 Strength heavy fighters can close down a hallway even if it is 20 feet wide | | | |

| Marks do wonders against shifty kobolds. Remembering opportunity attacks also does wonders against shifty kobolds.
Remembering that Immediate actions can only be used once per round (not per turn) does extra wonders against kobold dragonshields.
Ranged strikers also do wonders against shifty kobolds.
Our group has only had marginal issues taking down kobolds. Granted, my players have been pretty good about setting up screens/choke points and the Warlord is getting very good at using powers which push/pull/slide/swap enemies. Doesn't matter if the kobold is shifty if you force it into a corner (or into the path of an oncoming giant boulder). | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? | | The shift is a reaction and not a interrupt ability. So just use powers that allow move and attack. That way you get to attack before the kobold gets to shift. Charge, kill kobold, charge, kill kobold, repeat. | | 270+ Trades Completed (194 maxminis | 50 wizards | 29 hordelings) References: http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/view/topic/forumid/53/postid/435268/Default.aspx H/W List: http://www.maxminis.com/hwlist.asp?user=gausse Bad Trades: Chaotic Good (Strongbow Lone Eagle), dndonuts, Allard, ScottWallace Email: gausse2@yahoo.com

| Posted By wicked cool on 08/01/2008 5:59 PM where does it say you can charge and it cant shift It doesn't. That's one of the major fault lines in 4e right now (monster powers aren't always clearly defined as either a reaction or interrupt). It could be fixed in the errata, however, WotC is sending me "http 500" errors (always a bright sign for the D&DI ).
Since dragonshield tactics isn't defined it's up to the DM to decide whether it is a reaction or interrupt.
My take is that flavor-wise it should be an interrupt. Makes more sense that way. Also makes Kobold Dragonshields a lot nastier and more resilient.

| | If you treat it as an interrupt, does that mean they are no longer able to move after the kobold shifts? | | | |
