| | This is slightly off topic I suppose, but I have noticed by reading the messages in this forum, a lot of people read books set in the D&D world...
Can anyone recommend to me a novel, or series of novels, that are set in the D&D world that are a really good read. Which ones would you say are your favorites and why. I wanted to buy a book to read a couple of weeks ago when I went into town and there were hundreds on the fantasy section with dozens of D&D books. I'd prefer them to be D&D but that isn't a really solid factor if the story is good.
Thanks all,
D. | | --- D-Rock Roberts

| | I have read several older D&D books, back with it was owned by TSR. For example, the Dragonlance Chronicles are one of my favorites, as well as the Dark Elf Trilogy. Currently I am reading "Spellfire" by Ed Greenwood, and that's a good read as well. | | Trade references: http://www.maxminis.com/Forums/tabid/104/forumid/53/postid/801085/view/topic/Default.aspx Trades on WotC: vandyfry, hothie. | Anything by Ed Greenwood. The spellfire books, the shadow of the avatar series, the Elminster series.

| This to me is an easy answer: 1) First read the Dragonlance series called Chronicles (vol. 1, 2, and 3) 2) Drangonlance Legends series (vol. 1, 2, and 3) after that if you liked the Chronicles series (Raistlin is the best character ever!) 3) Any of the Drizzt books set in the Forgotten Realms (Salvatore is a great author!!!) Start with either "Homeland" or "The Crystal Shard"
- I started with Homeland which tells the story of Drizzt from birth and gives his backstory but the Crystal Shard was actually the first books with Drizzt in them and was one of my favortite series. Either order would work ok I think.
Most people will tell you these two series of books (Dragonlance and Drizzt) are the best. | | Here is my have want list: http://www.maxminis.com/hw_list.asp?user=tirwin Successful Trades: Irav222 (x2), Darkfather, Kaya Kenobi, conanb1, dudeeehm, Uk, Master Elminster, tmertz, Shasack, Drewskie, et39100 (x2), Gaddszooks (x4), Romers, Weinbergphp, Vaasic, Navaire, lurch_E_bean, dobblegog, cjmax, jthm, Meds x2, hellfire2, w33zrfan, unmaker, sthig, Eldarion, drowdude, DM Lackey, griffat, eryador, tsech (not sure if this is his screen name?), Jordan, entropysoda, MikeWis, HalifaxDM, Targan, Drakul, wraith428, dmindock, mythoscreature, Tenlado,Chaotic Good, Asteroidjawa, Puggins, Bdog, slapdragon, Drakkengi,WarRabbit(2), Mnpatsfan, Greymouse, Snapdragon, Isondaho, Halofurry, Krush, Ekomega, Amator, Minatoman38, + many new trades recorded by maxminis, and never had a bad trade so please help keep the streak alive, thanks! | Thanks for your comments and suggestions everyone, I am going to be going to the book store in town in a few days, I'll bring these titles/authors with me and check some of them out and make a decision. :)

| As mentioned above, The Legend of Drizzt saga (many books) and the Sellswords (3 books) by Bob Salvatore are great reads, he does a great job of interweaving a good story, with interesting characters, internal struggles and excellent fight writing. The series has been written over the last twenty years and sports like 15-20 novels, and its just absolutely amazing at times. If you can find them, the Gord the Rogue series written by Gygax back in the 80s is very good too. Set in Greyhawk and I believe they are all out of print at this time, so you'll have to pick them up online methinks. My personal suggestion actually isn't a D&D series, but is one of the best modern fantasy series I've ever read, so its worth breaking your minor limitation...the Malazan Book of the Fallen series by Steven Erikson. Its a very gritty, very visceral take on fantasy with a strong war theme. If you can put up with fairly graphic writing, and also handle the fact that he switches entire character and plot sets from novel to novel, its an amazing story to read. 8 of ten planned books are availible now starting with Gardens of the Moon. | | | |
