1st edition combat went something like this

Surprise: Combat begins with a check for surprise. Under normal circumstances, each side rolls a d6, and the other side is surprised on a 1 - 2. The difference between the two surprise die rolls indicates the number of six second segments that surprise lasts. Each segment of surprise permits the unsurprised side a full round's worth of action. Missile and thrown weapons may be used at three times the normal rate. While the rules don't explicitly state, we assume that spells may only be cast if their casting time (in segments) fits within the surprise time.

Combat Distance: This is randomly determined after surprise. The DM rolls a d6+4 for the number of inches apart the party is. “Inches,” in this case, refers to the miniatures roots of AD&D. Indoors and underground, an “inch” refers to ten feet, while outdoors, an “inch” refers to ten yards.

Initiative: Once surprise segments are over, both sides roll a d6 for initiative every round. Dexterity does not modify the initiative roll, nor does the weapon speed factor. The higher roll wins initiative. Actions are performed in order of initiative, including missile weapons, spell casting, and melee attacks.

There was a DEX init modifier to the init i believe.

Has the state of Math education got so bad that a simple concept like THAC0 is now difficult for teens and adults to use?  I don't remember anyone having problems with it back in the 80s.

I agree, but like many things in life when something superior comes out and replaces the old thing folks need to have it. Once upon a time we had to write hand written letters, now we have email. Do you think most people want to give up that level of convenience and go back to hand writing letters?

Could we get rid of cell phones at this point? Who would prefer going back to VHS when we have DVD.

For good or bad, that's how life works.

I agree the d20 system is better and I much prefer it to THAC0.  My only point was that THAC0 wasn't difficult to learn or use.

There were a lot of 1st edition rules that most of us (at least the people I gamed with) didn't use.  The groups I gamed with would just roll the d6 for initiative with the higher rolling side going first.  We never worried about range outside of the DM determining whether the sides were in range of each other.  We never worried about segments or casting times, or any of those things.

Same here. It was in the spirit of 1st edition anyway, rules were merely guidelines we could adapt as we saw fit in our campaigns.

Do you think most people want to give up that level of convenience and go back to hand writing letters?

The exemple you're taking brings back many memories. I remember years ago when I had to write letters to keep in touch with distant friends (and girlfriends too)...
Of course email is faster.
But I remember how we took care of the handwriting, adding small drawings in the margin, thinking of fun things to add, etc. (Not sure you will clearly understand what I want to say, I'm reaching the limit of what I can express in english, that is still a foreign language for me).
An email doesn't convey much of this. It's rather impersonal. Even when I receive one with news from a good friend I haven't seen for the long time, it's still the same computer fonts, format, screen, etc. Not the same feeling I had when I found a real letter one one of my mates in the letterbox...
I preciously keep some letters of that time, it's still a pleasure to reread them from time to time. I don't think I'll ever keep an email...
Emails are certainly great for bussiness/work/commerce, that's for sure. But for family & friends communication, something was lost.
Now you said it, I might well go back to handwriting in a few occasions. I'm certains that at least some of my friends would like it too.

I think I strayed much from the original topic... Back to 4E...

Keep in mind I wasn't saying that emails are inherently better then hand written letters, just that they are faster and more convenient.

agreed, My wife and I still don't have cell phones. We had them separately as singles, but decided they weren't worth the cost for us specifically. As we become busier, we're finding times when it would be nice, but for now, we're still Cell Phoneless. We have a home phone of course.

We don't have cells either. Resisting hard (I'm in a business where most people do have them.) Not that i'm against them, just that i'm comfortable without.

Yup, me too.

We played for a short time trying to incorporate all the rules, it didn't last too long.  It was better balanced though.  A long sword wasn't necessarily the best weapon in the game.

The fact is that best magic weapons of the game were swords ; some weapons didn't even have their +1 equivalent in the magic items tables. This got no better with the Unerthed arcana...
Thankfully there was nothing stopping us to create what we wanted. You could easily invent a +4 intelligent flail of lightning, and discard the most powerful swords (defender +6, holy avenger +5, OUCH !)...

cell phones i think eventually will replace the home phone in society. i feel lost without mine. not so much in the talking nonsense part or the texting part but more of i got a flat tire and i need to call work or theres a ton of traffic and im going to be really late so better cancel those dinnrer plans, etc. Especially now that i have kids. sure you miss the letters you got when you were young from friends who were away but now you get video emails or pictures attached to emails. those are the emails worth keeping.
