well it's 4e time... I thought my first character would be a tiefling warlock or a spearfighter but in a 2 person party I don't know. My buddy is playing a tactical warlord. What should I pair with him? Others may join in the future.

Rock Bottom Pricing:
Arcane Archer 30, Centaur Hero 67, Human Cleric of Bane 25, Gold Champion 34, Death Knight 52, Goblin Blackblade 9, Silentwolf Goblin 7, Orc Raider 10, Dwarf axefighter 9, Healer 9, Thaskor 65, Aspect of Demogorgon 71, Ogre 9, Fire Giant 79, Human Wanderer 7, Drunken Master 18, Barghest 12, Longstider Barbarian 27, Longtooth Barbarian 22, Frost Giant 76, Ravenous Vampire 42, Large Earth Elemental: priceless

Party of 2 in 4e is pretty rough. I'd probably go with a Leader/Defender combo and make sure someone takes Arcane Initiate for blasting minions.

Maybe a Warlord and a Paladin? Seems like a good combo with quite a bit of access to healing surges, lots of tactical movement capacity, and good AC.

Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie?

Warlords tend to work best with characters that are good--if not great--meleee combatants. A Wizard would be tempting for crowd control, but much of the Warlord's coolness combos would be wasted on that class. I agree with Zenthrus; a Paladin is probably your best bet. A Cleric might not be a bad idea, either--you'd get access to a jillion healing abilities between the two of you, and they would bring some ranged firepower, something the Warlord is lacking, though the only area effect Cleric's get right off is Turn Undead.

Paladin would be my recommendation.

Went with a dwarf warhammer and sword fighter. High ac, hp, surges, and with the warlord (who is using a maul) we do alright. I'm pretty tactically strong so with his additional tricks we're a nightmare when it gets down to 1-2 and us.

I'd have tried a halfling Rogue.
d&d-3.5 experience is that rogues are low ac & fragile (D6 hit dice)
But in 4e a Halfling rogue can have
AC 17 (leather & dex=20)
+2 V's AoO (halfling)
+3 V's AoO (rougue charisma 16)
+2 AC "Lost in the crowd" as 1st-level feat.
AC 24, makes it really easy to run behind an enemy for a flank attack.

And thats just at first level, 2 additional feats can increase that to AC:20 (27 V's AoO).
Which makes Halfling Rogues, perhaps the 2nd best "tanks" in the game.

Only 2? Why not play 2 PCs each? I'm sure the DM wouldn't mind.

In 3e, I'd have one or two person parties, it can be done in 4e too... One of my faves in 3e for a solo campaign was gestalt. The player had the best of both classes and could do a bit more. In 4e, I would make it where they have two sets of at-will, encounter, daily, and utility, thus doubling their survivability. And I don't care for the point buy at 22 points, with this, I'd make it 36 points. That way they'd get a couple of 18s and good scores elsewhere.

Just a simple traveler from the swamps of Dagobah otherwise known as Florida. Also known as Hurricane Alley!
I always try to send through delivery confirmation, and I expect the same. It's only 55 cents extra, so it's just a little more than a pay phone call, so just do it for the Kai. I prefer to trade with people in the US and Canada, sorry everyone else.
