The Warlock is best with individual targets, due to thier at will powers and thier Warlock's curse. As a Striker, they deal more damage than a wizard does. Because you can build their main stat as Con based, you can also have a Warlock with vastly more hit points than a Wizard and not have it affect thier 'Spel' Stat, as it were.

The Wizard is great at battlefield control, either by simueltaneously striking multiple enemies (Scorching Burst) or by hindering them consistantly (Ray of Frost). While the damage output of a Wizard is far lower in comparison, the ability to wipe out multiple minons at once is invaluable to any party. Also, the Wizard, by and large, has far greater range than the Warlock Does. magic missile has a 20 square range vs. 10 for the Eldritch blast, which makes it slightly easier for them to control.

Because you get to select your implement mastery, a Wizard has a little more flexibility in tailoring the character. Any of the three implement masteries can be applied to any power, either offensively or defensively (Such as the Staff Defense). Conversely, the Warlock has three paths to choose, which is Dependant on the powers that you get (as an at will) the main stat you use (Con vs. Cha) and the encounters which work best for you at different levels.

While you are not beholden to choose powers (other than the at will) which are commesurate with your Warlock path, you will get the most benefit (normally) if you pick path powers that are in order with your specialty. That being said, the Warlock has an advantage here that the Wizard does not: The path a Warlock chooses can theoretically affect virtually all of his Encoutner Powers and Daily powers. The Wizard gets to use thier implement mastery but once per encounter.

Mostly, it is a flavor aspect of how you want your Arcane character to be. Should you want to multiclass, then certian classes become mroe obvious pairs. Paladin and Fey-touched Warlock (both Charisma based), Wizard and Swordmage (Both intelligence based).

Apples and Oranges.

Wizards are controllers. Warlocks are strikers. It's kind of like comparing Fighters to Rogues. They do different things.

A fairer comparison would be Warlock:Ranger:Rogue (especially Warlock:Ranger) since they are all strikers (and warlocks/rangers tend to be better ranged strikers than rogues).
