| Ok, the first time I posted this it moved to off-topic as we got off topic, so let's see if we can keep this on-topic
This went up at WotC boards last night, from Shoe:
quote: Our intention is to release the rulebook online, prior to the wardrums pre/release, and prior to Winter Fantasy.
The online rulebook might contain some updates beyond the printed version, including the new wording of smoke terrain (the rulebook went to print before the smoke rule was hammered out).
As there are changes to some of the rules, it behooves us to help out TO's by providing the rules ahead of time, and introducing those changes, so that TO's and judges can more quickly handle questions that might occur at the prerelease events.
I'll stay away from the need/want discussion.
I appreciate that the rules will be on-line, as I may be the judge in the Twin Cities for this tourney (and everyone knows rules aren't my specialty).

| | It's good to be releasing the rules prior to the tournaments so players and judges can get familiar with them. Thanks for the Shoe-mation | | | |

| I think this is how it should be done anyway. Similar to the MMO strategy guides that they've been doing now.
WotC could make a rulebook sized leatherbound (or not) 2-3 smallring binder.
Then offer the rulebook up for printing, and every change that comes out can also be available in a nice offical looking format; this could all be placed in the nice purty binder.
Guy's clarifications (Guyification? ClariFullertons? hmm his name doesnt work so swell) could become all official like as well to be placed in the binder.
Not like Id do it but it would add a bit of officialness/profesionalism to the judges at the touneys to be toting that around with them. | | Champion of the Alhoon and my called shot for Unhallowed Blood War Called Shot: Phoenix Trade withe me!

| I think they should wait until 3 weeks after the release tournaments to put out the rules, and then only for those who are part of the DDM Premiere Club. Everyone else should have to pay in small, monthly payments!

| This is as I expected. I'm just shoked that they haven't hit the server already (as the Aberrations rules did...).
What Shoe doesn't address, and what DOES need to be address is the DCI Floor rules. They haven't been updated since last May, and don't include the latest wording on the Intentional Draw, and still talk about "tile" points, and Plunder as an official triad scenario...

Well said. I agree that the rules need to be out there yesterday for us non-perfect rule types to begin getting the Q&A's down now. The DCI Floor Rules really need some help to be true.
I'm thankful that we'll have them earlier than the day of, but equally frustrated that he admits the online version will have additional updates beyond the new printed book. That will result in many arguments for me in the future. Oh joy.

| Ohh boy, don't get me started on intentional draws.
Not only have the floor rules not been changed, but the article stating that they are worth 1 point is still posted on the tournament page. Even better the article describes the process that would take place for the rule to change, and that process completely ignored. Richer still, the person who changed the rule was the person who wrote the article! The only place where one can find the change is, in best Hitchhiker Guide to the Galaxy fashion, is buried pages deep in a thread, that is buried pages deep in a message board.
Now, with the rulebook online. I think that it is exceptionally rude towards players and tournament organizers to not have this out at least a month before their first use, regardless of how conceptually simplge the changes may be. Nevertheless I'm glad, and somewhat placated to hear that they intend for them to be available before the tournament. I just hope the intention becomes reality.
These issues, and others, lead me to believe that WotC minis people do not have ability (for whatever reason, time, manpower, internal political issues, etc) to properly keep their website and tournament rules up to date (I mean floor rules, etc; Guy is superhuman and a great guy, absolutely none of my criticism is directed at him). I hope I'm wrong, or I hope the situation will be corrected. | | My online store http://store.hoardsters.com Use quick search to see scans of every stat card!

| Okay....I've said it before, but I like hearing myself talk...er...type.
Lets have the rulebook online, in a HTML format (or printable PDF), updated XX-ly, with Guy's clarifications as an appendix. Allow him to update the changes there vs. a separate website.
Then, at any tournament, the director could say that we're playing with rules version XX. This would eliminate the "I thought I read..." and "I heard from a friend that..." conversations whenever the rules are concerned.
Most judges will also want to peruse the WotC message board as well, for the latest and greatest rulings and clarifications, but for the average players, the above system would be a great boon. (IMO) | | Rhane "The focus is sharp in the city..." Have/Want List Reference thread Avatar Thread

It would be nice to see a) an annual update, timed about a month before the release of new starter (i.e. in 2006, this would have been a few days ago-ish), b) on the same page, a link to the booster insert info (it's okay with me that they add the new ones a couple days after the release, the avid players already have the new boosters anyway), c) also on the same page, a bi-monthly updated FAQ and Errata, and finally d) a link to the clarifications.

That is a very snifty idea. Considering how often rules are disputed (for a game claiming inherintly simple rules) current updates would be grand. On the other hand this would likely drive up the ever-increasing cost of minis even further. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? Yes, and the form that stores need to fill out to schedule tourneys doesn't have Assault as a format choice. It was confusing for my FLGS. It may not seem like much, but when you're having to persuade them to run the tourney in the first place, it doesn't help.

Yes, this was a sore point for my FLGS as well since DDM doesn't see much play action to begin with. Didn't help us try and sell him on the idea. | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?

So does this mean that the rules are lost somewhere in a warehouse with crates all numbered identically? This would explain quite a few things, actually.
Or does it mean that only the righteous will see the rules? [}:)]

Men? No women? Geesh ... chauvinist mysognist corporate freaks!
In all seriousness, this is good to hear. My hope is that we get something that is soon enough to be advantageous yet not so soon as to confuse folks as to how WinterFantasy will be run.
And I really hope we have a new triad format. I'd love to see the tournament scenarios get a bit of change - that can drive a huge swing in the figures that are "useful". | | Triangle DDM Skirmish Group | My Email | 45-ish trades and counting | Stuff for Trade * * * Show your brother some love and click here * * *

| Heh... Thanks Shoe!
I knew that they were going to be updated, my only urgency is that they be updated and released "soon". Sounds like they will.

| Well, I go back to what I said the first time.
I'm glad they will be released ahead of time. And, I might read them this go-round. The rules changes have me curious. | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis SOFTWARE: PC | PC (free) | MAC
