My wife just asked the dreaded question..
"How much money is tied up in these things?"
CRAP!
Umm.. I dont know. more than a little.
Seriously - how much?
Um.. Fenris and I decided long ago to not think about those numbers and to just remember that its cheaper than if we were into Golf or something
Well.. give me a rough guess of their worth. If its more than the deductable I want to put them into our home owners policy.
I will have to get back to you on that.. replacement value or what Ive spent (praying that she will go for the whole "I havent spent NEARLY that much" line...... )

Ack, feigh death... when she moves on, get up and hide the minis.

My wife has not asked the big question yet, but she is happy that I do some Delegate work and get some free stuff. I'm not sure she knows how much I spent, but I did try the "it is creaper then golf" explaination once... just once.

Blllleegghhemmmemmmmmmm....

Oh boy - I dread that day. It's weird though, she's gotta notices the 7 or so big plastic tupperwear boxes full of figs. (shrug)

Oh well, I think she's just happy I don't go out drinkin' with the boys.

Good luck with that, Ack.

My wife knows how much money Ive sunk and will be sinking into D&D.

She doesnt get it. She thinks Im wasting money on junk.

But she knows it makes me really happy so she just rolls her eyes and tells me how cute (but weird) it is to get excited over a plastic Chimera thats 2 inches tall.

Cute (but wierd) is good. My wife usussally uses other words like cute (but geeky) for my plasti-crack addiction. Does not bother me though as long as she does not find the money I've spent or horded away for the different Cons.

I am very relieved that my wife is interested in DDM also and likes opening boosters with me when the cases of the new set arrives. She knows what we spend on it and I usually just need to talk with her when making a larger purchase so she can help me decide how much we'll spend on it. On smaller purchases, she just has me decide usually.

My wife knows what I've got tied up in DDM, but long ago I quit golf and she's happy that my spare time is spent with DDM...rather than honky tonkin', chasing skirts, or spending money on golf, cars or electronics. My hobby is vastly less expensive.

Ack, if you have many expensive habits...you're dead meat. I'm sorry.

That's a question I'm dreading when it comes up.
When we married 8 years ago, I had about 10 boxes of metal minis (over 2000), scenery stuff, molding stuff etc. She has never wanted anything to do with my "troll thing" and never took any interest, just thought it was a dumb waste of money. All the boxes went into the workshop off the garage (not in the house of course), and that was the last it came up. So, whenever I bring out/display any minis, she has always assumed that I've had them for years. I just never mention that I'm still purchasing more and she never is interested enough to ask. But, now, 9 series (about 3222 minis) of DDM later, that 10 boxes has grown immensely and I'm just dreading the day she ventures into the workshop and starts asking questions. Thank God my 10 year old son loves them and skirmish, he has shelves full of them on, in and around Hirst Arts stuff to display them in his bedroom.
I just know one of these days questions will be asked and clarifications needed. Until that day....

Well for all the married/girlfriend types I'd say being straight up honest is usally the best. My wife has her hobbies/obsessions as well so that's usually a middle ground that we agree upon and leave it at that. Only comment I've ever gotten is that when we build our house the library will likely be filled with 2/3 of my rpg stuff.

Good luck w/ the nail biting.

I've gotten some funny looks and the like from my girlfriend, but I have avoided putting and monetary numbers to it. Of course, no hobby I have could close to the money I sink into taking her out, so not sure there's much room for complaint there yet.

There is no doubt Im addicted. none. but in the last 6 months Ive quit smoking.. and Im actually pretty sure I spend less on Minis than I did on cigs.. so maybe thats why she isnt giving me crap. im just hoping I can slide til I get my case(s) of WDs and close to completing all the sets.. that will make it a bit easier to "curb" my spending.

Mine's actually very good about the whole thing. The only minor squabbles are about the amount of time the hobby takes (online, playing, trading, sorting) and the space. It'd be nice if we lived in a house, then I'd have a room for my hobbies.

I got an earfull yesterday about how much I have spent, and how many minis I have stacked sitting around. She does not want me getting any Wardrums.

My computer room is getting smaller because of the number of minis taking up space. I need to get my basement finished.

I used the "playing with the kids" approach back when I was married and buying these type things. Thankfully DDM didn't come out until after we had already split otherwise I might just have to wonder if it played a role.

I feel your pain.

I got the same thing over the weekend, when I proposed buying two cases of the next set. "How much have you spent?" "Didn't you just buy a case?" "Why do you need another?"

She is now getting a day of beauty and pampering at a day spa to make up for it.

Heheh... I still try to think of it that way.

Honestly the biggest expense by far, more than buying the actual minis, is travel to Gencon Indy. This year, my wife is coming along for that. She's invited her sister to fly in to Indy also, and they'll spend time together, shopping and nerd-watching, while I'm at the minis tables and seminars. So it's like a joint vacation now, and suddenly my largest minis-related expense is no longer just MY expense. Now it's OUR expense, which somehow makes it ok.

I recommend this method! [:D]

Wow. While not married, I think that hiding the cost form your wife in not honest at all. I'm all in favor of full disclosure relationships. Every one on earth have his/her vices. No surprise there. While not all of my girl-friends approved of my hobbies (DDM is but one of them. I'm also collecting anique computers for example, which can be costy at times) they all understood that it's important to me and part of the person I am. The I see it your significant other simply have to accept the fact that it's important to you. Not unlike those parts in her that you accept even though you do not think of them highly. If the costs of your hobby are truely inadequate for your income, then by all means she'll be right to put you in order. After all this is a hobby. And I know I'll sound like an outsider but there are thing more important than those little plastic minis I love so much.
Last but not least, being rational with your money does not mean spending $0 on your hobbies. Simply do things proportionaly.

When I told my wife what I would spend in minis in 2006, she just looked at me with the "dumb and useless" words in her eyes...
But she doesn't care. She knows there's nothing she can do ΖD]. And she knows that it's my only "expensive" hobby.
The only thing she bothers with is storage, for she wants them to be ... hidden from sight... a little bit. However she likes the wood shelves I built, so it will be OK for 2 or 3 years ΖD].

Agree on your hobby budget ahead of time, and spend that much. That is my approach (though I'm sure I over spend). It helps that I play DDM with the kids too, and that she understands that you need a variety to be competitive. But, yeah, every once and a while she notices just how many minis there are and starts asking. That's one advantage to having them in boxes, where she doesn't usually see them.

My wife found out about a year ago how much I was spending and decided that the best way to save money was to help me find the best prices. It helps that my kids like them and that I explaned that its a game that all of them would like to play. She also knows that they are appreciating in value and that if she ever decides to divorce me that I get the minis and she gets everything else [:)]

Um, you could invest your money in something nice and safe like Enron! for example...um no wait that didn't work out did it.

Well you could play golf at the nicest places now and agree to cut back to the "cheap" courses and save some bucks...well not really... (I also play golf and I am sure you are all shocked, run a leauge and keep scores and stats...)

Well you could tout the investment potential. (Actually this did work for those of use fortunate enough to get in heavy 2 years ago.)

A night of drinking, money you just toss away when all is said and done. A case of plasticcrack, timeless and priceless...well kinda.

For those with the means, I highly suggest creating your own domain within the domicile to gather unto yourself all your minions. The single most common complaint seems to be when they clutter up other common space.

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

Quitting smoking is definitely a way to save money (with nice health benefits). I think that may be something you can say--hey, look, I quit smoking and that cost me $X on a weekly (or monthly) basis.

This is the very reason I started selling on E-bay, my wife hadn't asked how much I had been spending on figures, and of course this was right about the time Giants of Legend came out and the prices went up. She about flipped out when I ordered 10 cases of Giants of Legend, and 10 cases of Dragoneye and got my store going, but come this past Christmas one year into the store, she doesn't complain anymore, only about how much time I spend sorting, listing, and shipping things, but even that goes away now, since it is brining in money instead of sending it out. I never imagined how busy I would be though, 4 sets later, coming up on 5, and trying to keep every set in stock. To the husbands out there, try your best to be honest, it's the cornerstone of every good marriage.

Figure out how much money you would have spent on War Drums and instead spend that money staying out late going to bars and strip clubs with your mates.

Im sure she'd prefer that you spend your money on minis then have you out every friday night stuffing $20 into the thong of some sexy blonde stripper called Melony Peaks! [:D]

This was a very good idea.

For those with the means, I highly suggest creating your own domain within the domicile to gather unto yourself all your minions. The single most common complaint seems to be when they clutter up other common space.

Clearly great advice. I am now in the process of reconstructing the basement. I have about 1400 square feet to work with so I will be creating separate family room and play room spaces as well as a Bar, bathroom, office, laundy & utility space, bulk storage and best of all...I am creating my very own little space for "minis storage and sorting." This are will also be used for all the dwarven forge, mageknight and miscelaneous crap. But my wife is super excited about the other stuff that she is really not all that concerned about my space.

Here is to scraped up knuckles and sore muscles! The things that we
do for our beloved minis.
