I told my wife I "was gonna" take up smoking. Then pre-emptively gave it up (it was gonna be at least a 2 pack a day habit, oh, my poor lungs). With the money I divert into minis (which keeps my mind off the smoking so I don't go back), we still come out ahead.

I keep telling her she should be relieved at all the money we're saving. The doctor bills in 20 years were gonna be killer. She usually has a great story about all the money I saved when she brings a bunch of crap home from a shopping trip, so I figure we're about even.[:D]

The trick is, you just have to make sure you can spend enough money on your spouse for things she likes that is close to what you spend on minis. Then they can't complain. I have a feeling the problem with most guys is that they spend it ALL on minis [:p]

If you can just stop that habit and share the wealth, life is so much easier! Also, it helps me to butter up my girlfriend by requesting that she open all of my boosters cause she's the "lucky one". It's weird, but it's practically true. I tell her what rares I want her to hope for, I describe what it will look like, and then I let her have at the boosters. Now when I buy boosters, instead of her making fun of me, she says, "Do I get to open them?"

A few months ago I found some Dragoneye boosters at a comic shop that closed down. They had 7 of them. She pulled a LRD, Black Dragon, Brass Dragon, & Thayan Knight. I was shocked....and thrilled [:D] If I had opened them, I would've came home with 7 Bladesingers.

just for the record here.. how honest is my marriage and how cool is my wife?
I told her about this thread and quoted some of the funnier responses to it (especially yours Zoons! LOLLERSKATES!)

Her reply to the whole thing
You know its not about how much money you are spending on it.. its to make sure you are still playing in a year or you have sold off your collection for a profit
she then went on to comment to me about my magic collection and my 40K stuff (anyone want to buy a ton of unpainted SpaceOrks really cheap?)

and for the itemized list - the MaxMinis Have/Want list is good enough (off site backup).. i also make sure theres a backup of a semi-current copy of my bifur's database. so I wont have to itemize their value.. nor what Ive spent on getting them.

damn Im lucky.

$1600+ in the last two months, and i ALREADY have multiples of ALL the minis...but after that orc thread last month, and after seeing Zenako's Dwarf/orc battle...and hearing that abberations is out of stock now....well, you know how addictions work...

My wife simply can't know i spend that kind of money on little pieces of plastic...she has asked how much they cost twice, and each time i have refocussed/morphed her question into "how much does one cost" or, more specifically "how much does this wrackspawn cost? about 25 cents love..."

My wife knows that I collected MTG and sold that for some good money so she figures I can collect minis all I want and then when I get tired of them I can sell them and make some money off of them. That works for me. So far I have yet to sell an minis though..... [:0]

Same thing here. My wife spends money an what she wants and I spend on what I want. She's glad I spend time at home with the guys instead of at bar some where. My mother-in-law on the other hand, thinks it weird and childish, and that I should spend my time doing something else.

my mother inlaw is the same way except she tells me that i play with the devil toys. i used to try to tell her that thee is nothing demonic about it. it is the fight between good and evil. even showed her the agle types. she dont buy it. so now when ever i am around them i am sure to bring them up, tell them of the new sets and stuff. they look at me like i could care less. its pretty amusing.

My wife is really cool about it. I initially sold a bunch of old MTG cards and such to help suppliment my habit, then I discovered WoTC's Delegate program and I was saved, she no longer asks anything about the stuff I get, even though I still buy a bunch. She just asks if there are any new board games coming out. She is interested in learning SWM, but says she leave the DDM to me and my son.

The GF doesn't say much to me about it. She knew I was a geek going into things, so it won't do any good to complain now.

Then I totaled up the value (and how much she could expect to get) from my collection in the event of my untimely demise, and now she doesn't seem to care at all...Although she does keep asking me how I'm feeling. [)]

Of course, she also saw the box of M:tG cards that I traded in to start up with DDM...It wasn't very big, didn't include all of my collection (I found another couple boxes a month ago [:(]--I'm never going to be rid of the damn things), and was worth substantially more than she would ever have thought.

my wife doesn't know how much I spend and will never ask me since she doesn't support me and I work for a living. Also she spends more money than I do on far more crappier stuff (in my opinion at least).

The day I don't work and she supports me, or she stops spending just as much money on trivial stuff then it will be the day she has any right to question me [)] I do however have a hobbie budget I have inflicted on myself, otherwise it could get ugly. Half the time I am the one that feels guilty on buying stuff and she says "bah, just buy it (CRD), then I look at her: "why, new pair of shoes you got an eye on?"

My wife is currently playing in my AE campaign and we play Living Greyhawk at home events and cons together. Once Wardrums comes out I'm going to teach her skirmish. I figured it wasn't worth teaching her all the rules twice. As far as the money goes she's fine as long as I just use my 'allowance,' but I think she's softening up to buying things jointly that we'll both use now that she's been playing for six months.

Over the last couple of years I gave up drinking and smoking almost entirely, therefore she doesn't mind the money I spend on miniatures. Rather a geek with toy figures, than an alcoholic chasing other women. She always keeps telling me she does not want to know the exact amount of money which I have invested in my collection, but she does have a genreal idea.

My biggest problem isn't the asset of money, but of time. [:(]

My wife doesn't particularly care how much I spend as long as I don't cripple our budget; she encourages me to have a fun hobby that I enjoy.

The fight comes in when I want to go to a major oganized event and will be gone from home all day. The help that I provide around the house with chores and the kids (to say nothing of love and support [:p]) are, apparently, harder to do without than money...

I'd love to go to GenCon, but unfortunately, I've been forbidden until I can afford to take the whole family (which is a bit outside my budget right now... [B)])

My wife hates how much money I've spent, and doesn't understand the obsession. But she does like the fact that I share it with my 10 year old son (8 year old and 6 year old sons soon to follow). But she keeps our budget, so there's no hiding the cost.

Space was the biggest problem my wife had with it until we moved out of our apartment 1 1/2 years ago and got a big old house. Now I have an unfinished room downstairs just for my minis/warmaster/WH/scenery/board games/books etc., and everything is good. Although occasionally she will ask me to cut down on eBaying for a little while if too many little packages arrive too close together, overall she is very understanding.

You guys all have this money thing backwards. In my house it goes like this:

Her: Do you have any idea how much you've spent on those things?
Me: What? The kids? Oh, they're worth it.[:p]
Her: Don't get smart with me. You know, the DDM stuff all over the basement.
Me: Not that much really. I buy cases so that the cost isn't nearly as much.
Her: Someday I'm going to show you, and you're going to be shocked.
Me: I'll try to keep it... ooof! Ow! Damn!
Her: Hee hee. That sounded painful. *giggle* What was it? [}:)]
Me: I just tripped over this excersize machine you made me buy and almost broke my leg. When are you gonna use this thing anyway?
Her: Ummm, I gotta go out now, we'll talk about this some other time.
Me: Talk about what?
Her: I dunno. I forget. See ya.

First I have to say after reading all the posts there is some funny comments here.
I have to agree on the time thing. If I had my way I would probably spend all my free time gaming (Video games, rpgs, skirimshing) which I did when I was single. But being married with kids I had to cut back So, six days a week after work are devoted to her and the kids and Sundays After church is devoted to gaming. It turns out to be a great system Now I just cant wait til the little ones r old enough to learn how to play.
On a side note My wife has no interest in learning how to play DDM, She has however learned to play dd which she liked but not enough to continue playing. (she says she dont want to learn to play ddm because then thats all we'll do, shes probaly right.)

I'm lucky in that I was able to get my wife interested in DDM when I started, and we play it together. My problem is twofold: on one hand, we've got a bit less discretionary income after buying a home last year (warning! understatement alert!), so I can't really justify a booster or two here and there like I used to. On the other hand, my mom tends to buy a csae for each of us for the holidays. Normally, that wouldn't be aproblem at all, but getting so many new figures at one time is a bit overwhelming for my wife. When we just had a handful of Dragoneye & Archfiends boosters, she was fine with sorting through them to find neat looking figures to build a warbarnd out of. Now that we have ~ 1,200 miniatures, and get about 100-200 new ones all at once whenever we get a case or two, her interest has waned as she sees learning about all the new figures and their intricacies as not being worth the time to her. Oh well... :(

I'm a little disturbed at how many people are hiding the extent of their addiction from their wives. If my fiance wasn't honest with me about his hobby expenses I'd be really ticked off at him, but then again we both stay on top of the bills and checkbook, so it'd be hard for either of us to hide anything major anyway. We survive by having similar but seperate hobbies. We both spend way too much on plastic, me on minis, him on model airplanes and spaceships. Whenever either of us gets a big new package in the mail, the other just rolls their eyes and goes back to playing with their own toys. Works great! (Budgets help)

I think a lot of it is more along the lines of "don't ask, don't tell" especially if you do not want learn the answer.

Hopefully everyone here is really only spending discretionary income on the hobby. Money that goes to entertainment, hobbies, sports or whatever one enjoys but that is not essential to keeping food on the table and a roof over ones head. (some of us just have bigger piles of the discretionary type of income than others...partially by dint of having been employed for over a quarter century....)

Built the addition for this addiction, now on to the "gaming table" project....

My wife and I make good salaries...

If there is something she wants, she buys it... if it's lots of cash, she asks me if we can afford it... I've only ever said "no" once, and that was on a $5000 embroidery machine... which we ended up getting 2 years later anyways.

If there is something I want, I buy it if I think we can afford it... Dumping $500 every 4 months on minis hardly even breaks the notice level for me or her.

She like to say I'm "off to play with my little men", but she really doesn't care very much. Actually to make up for her minor trashing of my hobby I make sure that she *has* to see every new mini that comes and goes from the house... more just to annoy her.. I usually show her what I'm trading away and will normally show her the pieces I get back in return.... she does the whole "yes dear, they are very nice" in return. It's a cute little game.

When I opened up my 3 cases of underdark, I sorted them all out and made her come review the troops.... I'll likely do the same with WarDrums... She will dutifully go through them, even check out a couple that she thinks look cool and then say they are "very nice".. and walk away rolling her eyes. I love it when she patronizes me.

It's a fun little relationship...

Hopefully everyone here is really only spending discretionary income on the hobby. Money that goes to entertainment, hobbies, sports or whatever one enjoys but that is not essential to keeping food on the table and a roof over ones head. (some of us just have bigger piles of the discretionary type of income than others...partially by dint of having been employed for over a quarter century....)

exactly, some of you grognards have been working for what? 20-25 years. I've been professionally employed for about 8 months [:p] wnad when Im not paying bills like mad or getting things for the wee-one I'll buy a booster or two of minis, or splurge and buy a case when it a new set comes out.

I wish I had disposable income /cry

Man, you guys are whipped. I play golf, and collect DDM. My gf can go to hell for all the money she's wasted on handbags, makeup, etc.

I keep track of how much I spend, but then I also keep track of her less than thrifty expenditures. The minute she gives me the 'too much money' routine, I'm pulling reciepts.

didn't mean to come off as judgemental, just surprised. I'm just as disturbed that so many wives seem stereotypical and spend their discretionary money on shoes and clothes. Give this girl minis and RPG books any day! [:D]
