| I'll make no guarantees, but I'll try to have IRC running as much as possible during Winter Fantasy. If you're able to kill time in the IRC channel, you might do well to hang out in there... you never know what will happen. I'm hoping to be able to get some other MaxMinis folks to add send notes, and I will try to provide little "mini webcasts" of certain things (such as the colossal red dragon, supposedly making a premiere at the event). Maybe join us for some virtual beer. All in the name of fun.

| Okay, in hopes of helping people connect to IRC, I have written up some basic instructions for the two PC-based IRC programs:
mIRC

Instructions:
1) Start the program.
2) A screen called "mIRC options" should appear
<br><b>2a)</b> Fill in your full name with whatever you want (i.e. your maxminis nickname).<br> It does not have to be your real name.<br><b>2b)</b> Fill in the email address part. Again, this can be real or made-up.<br><b>2c)</b> Fill in your "nickname:" I would advise using your maxminis nickname<br> (or some version of it) so we can easily identify you.<br><b>2d)</b> Fill in the "Alternative:" (nickname) with something like maxminisnickname1<br> (or anything, it's just a backup feature in case you get disconnected from<br> the server due to Internet problems and your original IRC connection<br> hasn't disconnected from the server.<br>
3) Press the "OK" button.
Below is a string to enter into the "Status" Window that appears within mIRC. (It's the large window that has a 1-line data entry bar along the bottom. The connection string will essentially automate your connection to the server and have you join the #maxminis channel.
Here is the string. Type or copy/paste it into the "Status" window:
/server irc.psionics.net -j #maxminis

Download Trillian Basic 3 (It will take you to download.com)
Instructions:
1 Download and install Trillian
2 Feel free to choose which programs you want it to run (I will only cover IRC)
3 Launch Trillian
4 Pick the global nickname and icon you want.
5 In the Trillian Contact window that appears, choose the following from the toolbar:
“Trillian” --> Connections --> Manage my Connections
6 On the left of the “Trillian Preferences” box, choose the “Identities & Connections” tab
7 To the right, look for the “Add a new connection…” button; press it
8 Choose “IRC” from small pop-up list.
9 Fill in the data as follows, going from top to bottom (click on each box to type in the data) Feel free to copy/paste data:
a) Psionics.net
b) chat.psionics.net::6660-6669
c) Maxminis Username (i.e. dariustad)
d) Maxminis Username (or your real name if you want people to know)
e) Some kind of random information, like the title you’d want on maxminis
f) tick the box next to “Automatically connect to this account at
startup” if you don’t want to mess with Trillian to connect.
10 Press the “Change…” button
11 Under the “Connection” tab in the “IRC Psionics.net Preferences” box
a) Under the “Perform Buffer” section
b) tick the box next to “After connecting to this IRC server…”
c) enter the following into the box (copy and paste):
/join #maxminis
d) click the “Save Settings” button
12 Press the “Connect” button (it is within the shaded area of the lines you just filled in)
13 You should then connect to the IRC server and Trillian will automatically create and open the window for you to begin chatting in #maxminis!

There are a ton of networks, be sure to chose irc.psionics.net. DariusTAD is the mIRC guru, he could give you step-by-step directions if you need them. Someone's always in the channel, so feel free to test any time. | |

| Planchet has it right.
The commands for entering on the command line, if you are having a problem finding the right info in your IRC options, should be something like:
/server -m irc.psionics.net
then
/join #maxminis
and
/nick Iaman00bplzdonthurtme (or your name/nickname) | |

| Exactly, it's an old program that requires command input. It's like an old car that still runs well but isn't as good as the latest model. I'm personally a much bigger fan of DC++ for a variety of reasons. Than again I use it for things IRC takes forever to do.

| Let's not debate the virtues of IRC vs other services. Facts are facts: we're using it. Dariustad is setting it up. Please don't disparage his efforts. Without his contribution, you'd just be staring at webpage updates without the opportunity for sharing the experience with the entire MaxMinis community AND (I hope) WOTC staff.

| Well, update for the IRC side of this shin-dig:
1) The instructions for mIRC and Trillian have been posted above.
2) The channel is prepped for the arrival of users, both maxminis and otherwise. It's currently an open forum (anyone can talk), but may become moderated depending on the number of people in the channel, the attitude, and who is speaking at a given time.
3) Possible chats with any reps from WotC will be dealt with as they arise. To maintain order, these will most certainly be moderated.
4) Since #maxminis has not had a tremendous amount of users until recently and due to the time of the event, I will most likely need some assistance monitoring the event, especially Saturday. Any maxminis member with some experience with IRC, especially being an operator, and if you plan to login in during the WF events, please drop me an email. Or, stop by the channel and we can have a chat.
I can train operators, but the time crunch certainly doesn't help with this.
5) Provided I am present, I will retain the right to make the final decsision in any situation. If I am not there, then any active channel operator will make such decisions. Anyone caught violating the rules of the network or the channel will be removed for the duration of the event.
6) Channel rules. They're basically the same as those used on the forum. They will be a little more strict during this WF event. This may include total channel moderation or the removal of those not acting respectfully, especially to other guests.
Otherwise, it's a fairly loose environment. We talk about minis, RPG's, news, trades, and all kinds of other things. Stop by sometime outside the event -- you might have fun! [:)] | |

2.) enter a desired nick/username
3.) click on connect
3.) Typing /join #maxminis

The website problem I have no idea, that must be on your end, however, I know that I personally and one other have trouble connecting to the IRC network and we have to disable temporarily our firewall (software) in order to access it. No amount of green-flagging the network or any other setting makes it work other than enabling ALL traffic. My hardware firewall gives me no problem with the network. | |

There are places in your settings where you can specifically allow programs through your firewall (assuming a standard Windows one). I don't know about other commercial firewalls, though. | |

I have a defenderpro firewall as well as the regular windows firewall.
With defenderpro you have to 'clear' an online application or it won't let you run or access it on line. In this case its as simple as clicking a button in a popup telling defenderpro to allow this application when you try to run IRC.

I use Sygate Personal Firewall Pro and the one in the LinkSys Router. The windows one is off. | |
