| Runelord Chat transcript: DariusTAD: Runelord is willing to answer painting questions as an intermission
TheRunes: I was hoping to have something new up for you guys, but sitebuilder is giving me a hard time
TheRunes: Looks like here we go! DariusTAD: IF you have any questions for TheRunes, aka RuneLord, send them to one of the active ops
DariusTAD: this is your chance to ask Rune! He'll reply live instead of delayed emails and forum posts!
Mindtrick: Rune- What has been the most challenging mini from the DMM line to repaint? TheRunes: Anything smaller than halfling size! Really the imp was the worst. The problem isn't with getting in there to paint it, the problem is in trying to get some sort of deffinition.
Toxic_Rat: What brand/type paints do you use? TheRunes: Usually Delta, but all my metallics are Reaper or GW - the coverage is better.
Mindtrick: What mini are you most looking forward to repainting next? From WD? TheRunes: There are a BUNCH DariusTAD: okay, choose the top 3; one from each rarity TheRunes: Warbound Impaler, both Aspects, Chimera (ok that was four!) TheRunes: Mrs: I'd like him to do the flaming skelli TheRunes: she means flameskull
DariusTAD: In other words, she wants to tortue you
TheRunes: one from each rarity would be Aspect of Hextor, Girallon, trog
Trimpnick: Do you count your paint steps^ And if so, do you have many more then WotC's for the same minis? TheRunes: I haven't counted paint steps to date. I would imagion many more!
Toxic_Rat: Have you tried Humbrol paints? TheRunes: no
Mindtrick: About how long does it take to repaint a medium sized mini? TheRunes: It takes around 1-2 hours to paint and another 30 min or so to base
Mindtrick: Rune- What has been the most challanging mini from the DDM line to repaint?
TheRunes: The swarm of spiders is a pain. Also anything with flames or alot of scales takes a little more work. The lizardfolk is one of my favorites, but I haven't reattempted him because he takes too long to paint.
Sammael: Q for Runes: how fragile and prone to chipping are repainted minis in comparison to stock ones? TheRunes: I haven't had any complaints yet. The plastic seems to hold the paint well. I also seal them with at least three coats of Testors Dullcote.
Red_Ranger: Rune - Do you focus on one or two minis at a time, or do larger batches at once? TheRunes: I usually have around 20 or more minis ready to go (primed, dismantled) and three or four that I focus on.
Toxic_Rat: Assuming that you have to thin the paint, what ratio do you use? TheRunes: Thinning paint is something to do carefully. If you go too thin I washes the mini, not enough and it is too clumpy. I usually do a 25% - 50% water mix, depending on how much transparency I want to achive.
glumaniac: do you use distilled water? TheRunes: tap water actually (which fellow painters would skin me for!)
glumaniac: do you add any accelerators or retardants? TheRunes: I haven't had a good chance to work with them yet. I usually get a mini done so fast that my pallet doesn't dry!
Toxic_Rat: what size brushes, and what kind of bristle? TheRunes: I like natural hair brushes, and use everything from #3 to #10-0. I buy a few good brushes, and some walmart ones to support the rest. TheRunes: end
Mindtrick: So what would you charge to repaint the Aspect of Hextor? (We might use that as the trophy for our next Florida DDM Open) TheRunes: The ultimate rework of Hextor would be rebasing him with a Heironious mini, locked in mortal combat.
Mindtrick: oooo, that would be cool TheRunes: Barring that....I'd like to spread the arms out a little more and put him on a big pile of skulls!
TheRunes: oops, I read that a change, not charge!
Mindtrick: What has been the hardest painting skill to master? TheRunes: blending, especially reds and oranges
Red_Ranger: Starting into washes, what brand of ink, if any, and is it available at stores like Hobby Lobby or Michaels? TheRunes: I like to use GW ink. I also have some pastel ink powder that I have been itching to try.
glumaniac: you in CT? TheRunes: yes - we are nestled in the woods of CT!
glumaniac: how do you layer your work? what do you paint first? where do you start on a mini (besides the obvious priming) TheRunes: The easiest place to start is the deepest layers. If you get the innermost layers done first, you run less of a chance of having to repaint them later (due to an error). I like to paint skin first, then hair and eyes. Next clothing and lower layers. Details are always last, and reprimed before being done.
glumaniac: what kind of brush do you use to paint eyes? I find myself having a horrible time with the different guides and suggestions out there TheRunes: a #10-0, and I change the bugger out every 20 minis or so.
glumaniac: change? TheRunes: I retire it to other duty. I have a brush at all times specifically for eyes.
glumaniac: aha! TheRunes: A trick for eyes, use a dark blue, grey, or brown instead of black for the first layer. Paint in a small oval, then go over this with a smaller off white oval.
glumaniac: tricky TheRunes: The pupil is the hardest. I use black paint (usually) Make sure you can just see paint on the brush tip, then hold very still and dot each one. Controlled breathing works well for holding still.
Toxic_Rat: What terrain materials do you use for the bases? TheRunes: I use sand from my kids' sandbox.
DariusTAD: I'm sure they're happy TheRunes: I wash it off, (sift out the bugs), and bake it in the oven before use. DariusTAD: nice and sterile TheRunes: I mix about 80% of that with various size model railroad ballest. I use gw ink to get the color (this one is a secret recipie!)
Toxic_Rat: Oh, and what glue do you use to affix them? TheRunes: locketite TheRunes: The foliage is a mix of brown, green, and light green static grass. btw - be carefull using some materials and superglue on bases...
Mindtrick: What kind of pricing structure do you have if we would like you to repaint some minis for us? (S/M/L/H, sculpt detail etc.) TheRunes: smalls are around $5, mediums $8-$12, Larges/Huges are $15-$30 it all depends on the amount of detail and the specifics of the job. DariusTAD: and gargantuans? TheRunes: Some figures are obviously more DariusTAD: and colossals? ;) TheRunes: hmmm, we could chat on that one
glumaniac: that would be on top of the minis price? TheRunes: I usually have the mini sent to me. Otherwise I have to charge whatever the mini cost me to get. Shipping (beat you to it!) is usually around $2 for a small package, and obviously more the bigger it gets (or where it's going!).
TheRunes: What do we have time for one more before Ian comes? Rav950: yes TheRunes: last one!
DariusTAD: what is the air speed velocity of an unladened mini? DariusTAD: ;) TheRunes: lol glumaniac: lol TheRunes: african or european? DariusTAD: both! glumaniac: lol
TheRunes: One plug before I go - visit Runelordsminis.com for some pics of my works! Thanks!
Korvax: Thanks Rune, lots of good info in there DariusTAD: Thank you, Runelord! You were most gracious! TheRunes: you are all very welcome
IuztheEvil - Jason Bulmahn chat DariusTAD: IuztheEvil! Jason Bulmahn, Managing Editor of Dragon JasonB: hey
robbdaman: how's the games going? JasonB: Not to shabby. Pretty good. The vintage went pretty well for me yesterday.
robbdaman: yeah what about that HUGE promo? JasonB: things on the Huge front are progressing nicely. I hope to have news I can share soon
True_Blue: the Drow Outpost was a hit, did you expect it to be? JasonB: The drow outpost did go over rather well... and we are looking forward to doing another
Sammael: Will the promo thing be limited to US residents or will us poor Europeans be eligible as well? JasonB: The promo should be available to everybody I cannot make concrete promises on that front.. but it does not seem unreasonable
Rabulias: will Dragon ever get an article like the WarDrums article in Scrye? like for WotDQ? JasonB: I am going to look into that sort of large spoiler article... it seems like we would be a good place for it
robbdaman: any chance of reprinting the map or making it available online for those who couldn't buy it? or is it always going to be available direct from Paizo? JasonB: Well.. you can still get it from us directly.. obligatory plug for paizo.com
robbdaman: I hear we're supposed to get two new maps in Dragon this year, any hints on what they are? JasonB: I am hoping to get a number of maps in the magazine this year.. but we will have to see how it plays out
Trimpnick: can`t you open a Harbinger Booster on camera for us? :p Sammael: I never got even a single Harbinger booster, just starters. They were gone by the time I got into DDM. JasonB: Oh no.. that would be lunacy.. once you start you just can't stop. I got 2nd place in the vintage and snagged 4.. resisting them is a supreme challenge
Amator: Jason, what is the best way for a first time writer to increase their chances of publication in Dragon? For both RPG and fiction. JasonB: The first step to get in the magazine is to download our writers guidelines.. read the magazine... and send in a query to dragon@paizo.com
JasonB: Alright everybody.. I am off to try and steal some wardrums when no one is looking... talk to you all later
DariusTAD: Thanks, Jason
Cheers! | | Merric Blackman
