So far, I have yet to see any tales of what occured during the prerelease tourney, or any discussion of the new rules from the rulebooks in those starters ... anyone care to spill some beans? Who won the tourney? What figures were effective? How big were warbands? WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE RULES?

(Note: Feathers post blow is not requesting that I be banned ... there was a spammer/troll on this thread that has subsequently been deleted. Feathers doesn't want me banned, although I hear he does want to see my bitten by 1,027 fleas ...)

I've been vibrating like a tuning fork since Wednesday night, checking maxminis like an addict, hoping for more than just a glimpse of the new rules.

What I'm guessing is either A) the rules changes really are incredibly insignificant, such that I wouldn't be spending my time posting them if I were there either, or B) the maxminis folks are so rabidly engaged with playing and discussion that they really cannot spare the time to post the few changes that there are, or C) the changes are so many that it would take so much time to post them that the players would be dragged away from far more fun pursuits.

Well, I don't have time atm for a complete rundown, but I can tell you that the most significant rule change that wasn't widely publicized was counting around corners for commanders (being under command and commander effects) -- now you "cut" the corner diagonally instead of counting around the wall.

Warbands I played against (five of them) had any where from 5 to 8 figures (mine had 8).

It's hard to say which figures were effective, because they were mixed with other figures they wouldn't normally be with -- but the Large Duergar seemed decent, while the Howling Orc was terrible for me.

My H/W list is not current...

Howling Orc was terrible for me too, even tho seemed like a good idea on my WB. Large Duergar was fine.
I must say that the Warpriest of Moradin and the Aspect of Hextor were between most of the best warbands.

My buddy Mark (Lord_Raven) beat my other buddy Dagni in the finals of the pre-release to bring victory home to the locals. Mark is from Virginia. I don't have the complete top 8 list but know that my buddies Stephen (AesophDarkfable)and Patrick (Daemonkain--another Virginian) were there with another friend Mark (Markdragon).

I was outside looking in, falling at the number 9 slot. I believe Mark Smith who made the long trip from the UK (#2 player behind Alepulp) and who I had the pleasure of playing in sealed the night before, held the #8 slot, right above me.

I was further tortured [:)] when I was told someone dropped and that I was moved up into the #8 slot, only to find that Pat Ellis was not dropping. Oh well.

I went 5-2 and there were something like 8 5-2 players fighting for 6 slots behind Dagni and maybe Mark (not sure who finished second).

The Warpriest of Moradin was my bane! Both of my losses came because of the Warpriest forcing out of command figures to rout when they were hit and failed the morale checks. I lost a Hill Giant Barbarian with 140 hit points because of those dreaded Warpriests!

The Wardrummer was also nasty but know of only one player using it. I was able to base the Wardrummer and my archenemy Warpriest of Moradin and then lucky enough to win initiative. I crushed the wounded Warpriest and then killed the Wardrummer.

In another game, I faced both the Warpriest and the Aspect of Moradin (nasty combo). I was fortunate enough that the Warpriest got too close and fell to the blows of my Hill Giant Barbarian and then was able to swarm over the Aspect.

So out of 7 games, I faced 4 Warpriests and went 2-2 against them.

I know that Lord_Raven beat Dagni using a Sand Giant. However, I don't know the rest of their warbands.

Besides Warpriests, there were plenty of Hill Giant Barbarians, Aspect of Hextors and War Trolls. Distribution of figures were very strange because there were several warbands with dual rares such as a dual Aspect of Hextor warband and a dual Zakya Rakshasa warband.

Here was my warband:

Hill Giant Barbarian
Warforged Bodyguard
Tiefling Blademaster
Sacred Watcher
Axe Soldier X 2
Shieldwall Soldier
Trog Thug

I chose not to include the Sand Giant instead of the HGB or pairing the two because I was uncomfortable with the low activations. In hindsight, I think it was the correct decision for me. I also chose not to use the Chimera and the Lion of Talisid. We played on DragonShine map so I wasn't sure how effective the energy weapons would be and again, didn't find a way to fit the more costly figures into my warband.

My Tiefling Blademaster died several times (two for sure--my losses) but it may have been more due to user error than it being overly weak. I must say I did love the CE and both the plus 2 to hit or the extra 5 damage came in handy quite a few times. The Axe Soldiers were a surprise. I put them on for activations but found them quite useful. You must move them both as 1 activation which helps a lot if you want to get in 3 attacks (their two plus another) instead of the normal 2. Also, when next to each other, they hit for 15 magic damage which helped me bring down another Hill Giant Barbarian.

The tournament was a blast and I'm sure others will post with better and more elaborate battle descriptions. I must say that after 7 games, I was completed drained by the time we played 3 more at the Maxminis tournament.

Thanks for the posts so far. It's nice to see some info trickling in.

This is a significant change, thanks for posting it.

Hello - Im a Winter Fantasy 06 survivor. I can sum up this (and most cons) like this
We stayed up way too late, I went for beer instead of Minis as a prize, we didnt anywhere near enough food, the man with pop tarts is king.

Something that I overheard - The level of game play has gone way way up. We (not me) are playing at an incredibly high level as a whole.

The next generation is already coming into its own: Deklan Lynch (Pat's son) not only knocked Pat out of contention for the WD pre-release but also gave Kiddoc "the worst ass whoopin' Ive ever recieved". Go Dek! Fenris and I wanna see a showdown between him and Darien (a SoCal youngster) in the near future.

Now onto topics..
Rules - Its very clear that line spells must be targetted corner to corner. When you get a copy of the rule book, take a look at the flanking diagram. Find the mistake and be the first to post it (no one that has one post yet.. its not a big deal for us as players but new players might see some issues). Commanders are very important still... map choice and rally and MCs and all that.
League - I love league play. I went 11-3 i think.. and had the pleasure of playing a match against Ian (Wizards head of OP). One simple mistake lead to my dismantling. I shoulda had him sign something for me.
MM Draft - I was in a pod with Chad and we didnt get the best boosters. I built an ugly monstrosity that had a Chraal tied to Warpriest of Hextor, a Grimlock Barb and.. um.. a Wrackspawn. that was another of my "big beaters". It was a steaming pile of something.. tho I ended up having some very close games. For my contribution to the prize pool I donated a custom repainted Hill Giant Barbarian (by Runelord). We allowed those who came in 0-3 to pick twice and then started at the top again. Since I was ravenously hungry I choose Guinness as my prize pick. I think everyone got 2 picks at the prize pool.. we had a great time. A special thanks to Sean for running the draft so efficiently (tho I still think Kiddoc deserved a written warning!) and to Robbdaman for creating an awesome map.
Community - Ian and I talked alot over the course of the days. One of the things we strongly agreed on was that there is an incredible sense of community in these games. Its not like Magic or even D&D.. the minis folks are a special kind of folks. I had a spectacularly good time playing game after game of minis and just talking with alot of folks. I would go thru a list of all the cool folks I met, but I would hate to forget someone in the long ass list. Thanks to Rav for putting together the webcam / IRC chat.. was alot of fun to be on there for a few minutes.
The biggest thanks of the day goto all the people who didnt get to play at all and just hung out helping / judging. BShugg, Peter Lee, Shoe, Jesse.. and, well.. everyone.

Theres my Winter Fantasy recapped in a post. Im sure more will come. Please note I havent talked about how poorly I did in the Vintage or WD pre-release. but lets just say that my idea of Sand Giant, Hill Giant Barbarian, Zephyr Rakshasa and Shieldwall Soldier (no commander) was a stupid, stupid plan.

Independent (from the glossary):
This creature is always under command. It can rally itself as a commander does, though without a commander it adds only its own Level (Save) number to the morale save, as if it were being rallied by a Commander 0.

Not sure what "skinny" you want on Whirlwind Attack, but it affects creatures within melee reach, not just those you threaten.

Kithmaker, please tell me that you got that from the new rulebook[:)] I want to know if there are changes to Independent and Whirlwind Attack in the War Drums rules. Guy has hinted that Whirlwind will be different, and there's speculation about Independent because Epic Mordy has it, even though he's a commander.

Actuallly in the prerelease I was 6th after 6 rounds but lost and ended up being 11th. My warband was:
Warpriest of Moradin
Night Hag
Warforged Bodyguard
Orc Mauler
Terror Wight
Hobgoblin Archer
Quaggoth Slave
Hunting Cougar

I did not play with Shulluth or the Living Wall (which were my other over 25 pt figure). The Warpriest was a very nice piece with the morale boost and commander effect. I won 2 matches because I was able to kill the enemy commander and then keeping dinging the other warband till they fled as my figures were slaughtered.

The Vintage went better for me as I made the cut to 8 and got tied for 3rd/4th being destroyed by Jason in the semifinals. I drafted a difficult band.

Shambling Mound
Mummy
Human Thug (commander 0)
Wolf
Half Orc Assasin
Orc Spearfighter

I still have 2 unopened Harbinger boosters that I do not know if I should open.

Now for a war story. On Sunday for the sealed it was decided to use the Teleporter map. Plus they gave us 2 underdark booster and a wardrum starter. It is very wild and fun in a scary way. And then the Ian decided to instead of doing 5 rounds cut it to just 3 and do more even prizes for everyone. That was great for me as I was able to get to my flight on time and still get some nice prizes (Wardrum starter and booster). I would appreciate if anyone who stayed till the stats were posted could let me know what position I actually ended up.

I would like to thank the judges Brad, Peter and Rob for all the questions that got from me on the new figures and new maps. (Mark Smith and I locked them up with our teleporter map questions. And yes you can charge from a teleporter and through a teleporter..)

Finally also thanks to the Ian and the folks at WOTC for having a great show for DDM. (I had fun doing RPGA also but that would be another thread elsewhere.)

So, from what's been posted so far...

Line: no change in the targeting stuff (i.e. it's not like the cone).

Independent: No explanation for why epic Mordy is both Independent and a commander.

Geez, I was hoping for more. Maybe something like:

Bad Die Rolls: If a player named "Dave" rolls a 1, he gets to roll another die because his obviously sucks.

I'll be in San Francisco this week for a business trip, and I plan to stop by Endgame tomorrow (Monday) night. I'll bring the WD stuff I got and you can see the new rules for yourself.

My impressions from Winter Fantasy: Man...I am tired. 3 or 4 hours of sleep for the last 4 nights has taken it's toll. I played more DDM games in the last 4 days than I have in the last year. Learned a lot, and met quite a few really great people. Got to put faces with screen names. Had a blast! I most likely won't be able to make it to GenCon (Indy or SoCal), but I already am planning to be back at Winter Fantasy 2007.

1 - I knew there would be happiness at the events on sunday.. damn I wish I had gone. I needed to get home tho.
2 - look for updates to the floor rules
2a- You will roll only one die (possibly with inclusion of a definiation of "rolling")
2b- You can only be enrolled in one tournament at the same time (credit to me and Kiddoc)

Ive asked that they be offically termed "Ack-ratta".. but that was probably a bit much.

:-D

See everyone in August.

Ah yes, I was on the receiving end of many firsts this weekend.

I am, possibly the only player to successfully have played in two tournaments at the same time. Needless to say, bshugg was not thrilled with me. Of course the term "success" is relative, since Declan Lynch absolutely mopped the floor with me, and I dropped that tourney to play sealed (I was due in for a Rikka, IAN promised me my box had it!). I then proceded to open a 7 commander pool. For fun, I played 5 of them, and only 5, at 190 points, and still went 2-2 (funnest match ever Sean!).

I also may be receiving the first ever written warning from DDM judges (going framed into my trophy case!) [:D]

Oh, and I was lobbying hard for being able to charge through teleporters, and was vindicated when I got Shoefirmed a few minutes later!

Good times, good times.

My guess re mordy is it might make a difference one day, next rules version :|

My guess for 'Brass Samurai/Dark Traveler' is that errata or actual card description will specify threatening squares for brass samurai power

I left before the final of the WD so I just heard Mark one, Congrats on that. I had beat Patrick (DaemonKain) earlier in the day so I would have finished 3rd and he 4th for the top 4.

My original band was-
Warforged Captain
Warforged Scout
Bloodghost Berserker x2
Dragonne
Hunting Cougar
Tiefling Blademaster

It didnt look like much but it worked. My only losses were to Dagni in the 4th and PatEllis in the 7th. I beat Millygoat in the first draft rd,
my band was
Dragon Totem Hero
Brass Samurai
Chrimera
Howling Orc
Quaggoth
Frost Dwarf

and then got destroyed by Dagni again.

Good times there.

Im out- find me on Hordelings if you want to chat.

Bad Die Rolls: If a player named "Dave" rolls a 1, he gets to roll another die because his obviously sucks.

Here, here I second that motion! [:D]

Whirlwind is within melee reach. According to the book.

You're leaving out information. You should reread that entry.

Aha! I knew it! Okay, so there is something in there that clarifies why the BS/DT combo won't work. Now, what about Epic Mordy having Independent?

Yes, and my area affect speels through my own troops to attack your all commander warbard was the high-light of my events to that point.

Well there is one figure that when I played in or when I played against him he was just horrible. I'm hoping that it was just the case that in sealed he is not well suited and that in constructed or epic he will play much better. His AC and damage output are low for his point cost, and his speed is low for his AC, so in other words:

Warduke = Lameduck

Again, I think that in constructed, where you build for synergie he may find his nitch, but in sealed I'd use the uncommons you pull. He either died or routed in every game I used him or was against him in.

That was my assessment of him as well. My girallion just rended a warduke apart while he barely damaged me. (Melee reach is nice[:D]).

War stories? Well, I shouldn't comment at all on my play on Sunday. Sleep deprivation, and being hungover coupled with the teleporter map just don't mix.

Vintage:

Shambling Mound
Evermeet (With the MFE!)
Cleric of order
filler

BLAH!

I originally expected to pull crappy rares, and then convinces myself that my time had come (I very rarely pulled duplicates of the Tier 1 rares, I usually have to trade for them). Nope, no orc champ for me, give my my 4th Human Cleric of Bane baby!

Prerelease:
I was very pleased to pull the Aspect of Hextor. I matched him up with the Warforged Captain, and the new Rakshasa. The Sacred Watcher kept people on their toes, and I just rocked through my first 3 rounds. I think I might have lost 1 or 2 pieces in those first 3 games total, and actually, none in my third game.

I was fortuante that I didn't face a single Hill Giant until the 6th round, nor the war troll till the 5th. However, that proved to be my undoing as I matched up with Dagni int he 6th round with BOTH a War Troll and the Hill Giant. BLAH! I made a huge mistake, not realizing that the Hill Giant had speed 10 (not excuse for that one, one of the few figs that we've had stats for for a while!).

It didn't help that the 2 key initiatives were both won by Dagni, but missing the speed of the Hill Giant in the 2nd round is really what lead to my downfall.

I made the top 8 as the #2 seed, and drafted "ok". I didn't get the pieces that I really wanted to complement what I'd taken so far, and Patrick Hanniby (sp?) was hate drafting me the whole time. So, I rolled out 5 activates: 2 Hill Giant Barbarians, Tiefling, trog, and Skeleton.

Sounds great, looks scary, needs a LOT of help to hit in cover.... Pat played a great game. I dictated where the combat would take place, and thought I had game in hand. But he fielded an full activation band with lots of "equal" hitters. They hit nearly every time, while I was lucky to probably end up getting one swing in 4. 1 in 4 means that I was taking out 1 figure per turn on average, but that wasn't nearly enough. I still had a chance, but had to make morale on the Hill giant without a commander, and I failed the roll.

I'd rolled WICKED hot all day long, so the low dice rolls evened things out as a whole.

No complaints.

Jarlaxle and I then took our drafted bands and jumped into the MaxMini's event, I was happy to grab the first 4 sets of Monster Cards from teh early 80's era of TSR as my primary prize. WOOP!

See you all at GenCon!

War Stories?!

I was the first person to play the Chimera, Night Hag, Frost Dwarf, Arcane Ballista, Derro, Enlarged Duergar, and Blood Ghost barbarian in official sanctioned play. Howso?

I ran the first table of the Mark of Heroes Special, Thursday afternoon.

Was it fun? Yes, even though I only had 3/5ths of the module available to me, and had to put things on hold for about 30 minutes while I scrambled around looking for SRM to get a print of the last pages. The mod missing was due to a screw up with Kinkos.

I killed 1 PC with the Enlarged Duergar. It was leveled as a pretty tough combatant. Another PC died in a non-mini related incident :-) Other than that, the party was successful.

Until I found the mod, I was trying my best to make up something reasonable based on a vague summary description and the bag of unused minis I had (some dire bears, the frost dwarf, more dwarfs, an arcane ballista, and the hag). I was fairly close with the dwarf and bears.

So that's a war story of a different sort :-)
