| You now, after seeing all the negativity, I thought that I'd toss in this thread. after all, the set can't be 100% bad, right?
I really think that, even with the gold missing, the Aspect of Hextor looks great - it's one of the most impressive rares in the whole set.
The HGB looks like a rare from any set, period.
Plenty of the commons and uncommons are pretty incredible - from the Steelheart Archer to the too-impressive Blood Ghost Berserker.

| I have to disagree with you on Shuluth Archvillian, Ackrus. It's not that he's painted poorly, just that I don't dig the metalic purple they used for his flesh.
Minatures that I did like include the Orc Wardrummer, Arcanix Guard, Howling Orc, Sacred Watcher and Terror Wight.

| | I really liked Shuluth and couldnt believe ppl didnt like Warduke. I thought both were impressive. The HGB, Girallon, and Large Duergar were all really good uncommons too in my opinion. The War Troll came out pretty good, and so did the Aspect of Hextor and pretty much the Aspect of Moradin. The Aspect of Moradin doesnt look exactly like the Master Paint, but I was still impressed with him. | | Champion of a Knight of Takhisis/Knight of Neraka |

| These are the problems as I see them:
1) Some of the paint masters are too complicated. During the simplification process, things got bad. (Frost Dwarf, anyone?)
2) There's a huge variance in paint jobs. Some figures are painted much better than other versions of that figure.
3) Browns and blacks may make sense, but they translate badly to good-looking figures.
I haven't seen much WD yet, but what I've seen (mostly common + uncommon) looks fine. OTOH, I get to see the Frost Dwarf tomorrow. (Oh, saints preserve me!)
Cheers!

| I agree with the Steelheart Archer. I got to get a good look at one yesterday in a trade with Lab Monkey. It is a nice fig and rivals some of the paint jobs on rares from other sets (MFT/Adv Wiz).
I too like the Shuluth. The purple metallic paint gives it more of an alien feel. But this is me..... | | Ambassador of FUN!!!

Don't forget that these are "cheap" minis and that chinese painters will never get rich for doing them. WOTCH could easily make a better quality product IF they wanted, but they have to earn as much money as they can while spending a ridiculously low sum of money. Look at all the errors (maps, stat cards typos) they make. Problem is they'll go on like this, so It's either "we won't buy minis anymore" or "we must stay happy with what we have", even if we don't have to necessarily like it.

| What's funny is that the uncommons and commons look better than some of the rares in this set. The Orc Mauler looks pretty cool for a common (wish it had better skirmish stats...), and the Blood Ghost Berserker looks pretty awesome as well.

| I agree that there are several minis in this set that look fine to good. Many of them are mentioned in this thread: Blood Ghost Berserker, Steelheart Archer, Wardrummer, Ogre War Hulk, Aspect of Hextor, Arcanix Guard, etc. If only the rest of the set looked like these guys...
Finally, I disagree with the love for the HGB. It's a nice sculpt and a great choice for an uncommon, but most of mine (6 of them) have a very sloppy paint job. The brown paint from the arm-band is all over the place, as is the yellow from his loin cloth. Also most of them have so much black wash on them that they suffer from the coal mine syndrome that plagues this set.

| In general, I don't think the painting is a problem. If we'd never seen the paint masters, I doubt people would have called this a disappointing set. Most of it looks really nice ... just not as nice as the paint masters. The only truly disappointing piece, the frost dwarf, would have been fine as a common. Accordingly ... we're crying over spilt milk ... but if we looked carefully, we'd see the milk glass is still mostly full.

| I like the Sand Giant, Aspect of Moradin and the Warforged Barbarian in the rares. I've heard good things about the Night Hag and King Obould but mine are still in the mail so I can't judge.
The Brass samurai,HGB, combat medic, and Inspired lieutenant among others are all good paint jobs in my opinion.
and for commons Arcanix guard,Hunting Cougar, Terror Wright and Axe soldier are all good looking.
Not all WD is bad its just the bad one can be really obviously bad and tend to overshadow the good paints. So many of the rares look unfinished and,IMHO, rares should be better quality paint jobs and more consistant.

| Myself, I think the Hill Giant Barbarian is one of the best figures in the set. It is far better than the previous Hill Giant (and it's uncommon).
Also the Inspiring Marshal, Steelheart Archer and Blood Ghost Berserker are nicely painted as are many of tne commons and uncommons.
The terror Wight is now my stand in for wights, ghouls etc. And it doesn't look lik MJ either.

| My Hill Giant Chieftain came out fine too. I'm still thinking it's missing footware may be a inside joke related to Shoe. The Arcanix Guard has one of the best common paint jobs I've seen, she could easily pass for an uncommon; or a rare from an earlier set.

| I have to strongly disagree on the Aspect of Hextor. Mine has a horrible paintjob (everything is just slathered on all over the place).
Good paintjobs in this set are primarily the commons. Some uncommons and a handful of rares are also quite nice.
Orc Mauler--I have a bunch and they all look excellent Wood Elf Ranger -- see above Arcanix Guard -- see above Warduke -- It's missing some steps but still looks quite nice Large Bronze Dragon -- sure it's not as nice as the Master but it's still a nice paintjob Orc Wardrummer -- phenomenal Large Duergar -- I haven't seen a bad paintjob on one of these yet. This is IMO the best in terms of consistency and quality Hunting Cougar -- It's not a very complicated paintjob but it'd definitely done well.
I think most of the disappointment in the paint for War Drums is in the rares. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? Champion of Dwarven Thunderlashers Knight of the Large Dire Chicken Have/Want List Trade References

| I've got to add some praise for the Wemic Barbarian. I just saw one for the first time today and it is definitely well painted. Now I just have to fix its weapon...
I've seen every figure but the Dragon Totem Hero now and there is plenty to like in this set. | | Well there were plenty of good peices that were painted well. Its just the bad ones were more noticable than the good ones. And thats the sad truth of it. But there are several, as I mentioned before, that they definetely did a good job with. Also, some peices are painted well sometimes, and other times not. I mean that happens. Its eems the Aspect of Hextor is one of these. I have two good ones, but it seems some ppl didnt get good ones. | | Champion of a Knight of Takhisis/Knight of Neraka
