| | I started with Harbinger, just picked up a few boosters... then a few more... then a few more. With Archfiends the 3 of us split 3 cases arcabious bought them,we reimbursed him, and we all opened them in a pile in his living room trading back and forth (gave arcabious a Drizzt for a mini to be named later, DOH!). Finally with GoL I started buying cases on my own and I've been a full fleged plasticrack addict ever since. | | | |

| I started collecting with Harbinger, right before Dragoneye came out. When Dragoneye did come out, I had only bought a Harbinger starter and booster.
I was thrilled when my first Dragoneye booster contained a Large Red Dragon, it made everything I had pulled previously look like rubbish. | | Champion of the Revenant Knight of the Elf Duskblade Complete Trades: Oni, Kidkach, Melrune, callidusx3

| Chainmail, and I was one of those who lamented pre-painted, plastic, random miniatures. Of coarse, if I was limited to my painted pewter pieces, my orc hordes would be only four strong.
I picked up some Harbinger, but hated the sculpts and paint of all but a handful of uncommons and rares. My distaste would later cost me, since I wound up eBaying the missing pieces to complete the set just last year.
I bought more Dragoneye, since I saw at GenCon SoCal that year that the sculpts and paints were already improving (except for the Dwarf Barbarian. Ugh!).
Archfiends was the first set that truly impressed me, and the first set I actually completed, all from random boosters, eBay, and a little trading on the WotC boards.

| Okay - I bought an aberations starter and booster. I probably bought 2-3 boosters from GoL & Abberations a month for the next 2 months. there just wasnt anyone aroudn to play with tho Fenris did try to convince me.
i really started collecting after the Angelfire release. My first complete set was Underdark.. but within a few weeks of that I had Abberations, Deathknell and Angelfire completed. | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist

| | Harbinger. First, a few boosters here and there. Then my friend bought more. Then I bought more. It's been about 3 or 4 cases worth per set since then. | | I'm really glad I got into the game when I did. It would be an uphill battle if you were to get in now. The one good thing is there are a lot of skirmish worthy peices lately, so its good in that respect. | Pre-Chainmail with the TSR Silver Anniversary and 3.0 release of minis (granted that was immediately prior to Chainmail).
I despised Harbinger when it came out (low-quality sculpts, mediocre paintjobs, and random packaging to boot) so I held off touching the line for a long time (I'm still not impressed with most of the Harbinger set). I finally sat up and took notice when the Underdark previews came out (sculpt and paintjob finally caught my attention). I started out buying only things I wanted for RPG purposes but slowly got suckered...I mean drawn into completing the sets.
War Drums was my first time purchasing by the case. I'm not 100% sold on the concept although I believe in terms of set completion is was slightly less expensive than ebaying (then again, I'm darn lucky with pulls from cases [:D]).
I still prefer my Chainmail minis to their DDM counterparts 90% of the time. | | Knight Warlord a.k.a. Commander (#32) in only 6 months. Where's my pie? Champion of Dwarven Thunderlashers Knight of the Large Dire Chicken Have/Want List Trade References

| I got into the game with angelfire. Believe me, getting the old sets proved quite expensive. I have a Couple of metal figures from the late 70's and 80's when I started playing D&D but didn't even notice the Harbinger sets in the store cause my local FLAGS closed and it was awhile till I found another one I liked.

| | Harbinger was the first set I got minis for. I did buy some of the horrors known as Chainmail minis and still bear the awful scars today. | Technically I have been collecting since the TSR Ral-Partha days, got all the chainmail minis from all the factions, saw chainmail die, endured the arguments of the " plastic prepainted minis suck " versus the " they would rule " flame wars in the WOTC chainmail boards.
Being a painter myself I thought these minis could give gamers the best of both worlds and I also think fortunately it was so (IMO)..... I have all the sets from harbinger to Wardrums and I can see myself still buying my usual 8 to 10 cases of each set for a long time.....ΖD]

| | The latest set released when I started collecting was Aberrations. It also happens to be the first set I completed. However, when I started collecting, there was approximately equal access to Archfiends, Dragoneye, Giants of Legend, and Aberrations. There were still some Archfiends boosters retailing for $9.99. | Started with lead miniatures back in the late '70s early '80s. Still have many of the TSR yellow box sets "Fighters" and "Females" among others. Loved painting them but lacked the patience or skill, so I've got quite a few unpainted ones. When the DDM line was introduced, I hopped on immediately with the Harbinger set. | Pre-Harbinger
I didn't go to GenCon but I begged and whined until someone agreeed to secure me copies of the GenCon'03 promo minis. Since then I have been hooked, and the "I Can't go to GenCon*, Please Send Me Minis" whine has become an annual event. I have been lucky enough each year to find kind folks willing to help a down-on-his-luck minis-brother out and hope for the same again in '06.
If you want to be tchnical and break it down to the first set I actually bought it was, of course, Harbinger. I remember being on trolley going home with a staert and 3 boosters in my bag and not being able to wait. I cracked them right then and there, thrilled to see an Ogre and piles of orcs and gnolls.
Ah, happy days...
And since other folks are stepping wildly outside the bounds of D&D minis for this, I might as well too. Keeping it to official only, I had a bunch of the Ral Partha and Citadel D&D miniatures back in the 80's (and of course ungodly piles of unofficial lead as well).
*I would, of course, love to go to GenCon but my wife's disability makes it virtually impossible, thus my annual plaintive whingeing. | | Champion of the Gelatinous Cube. Nemesis of Gnomes and Dinosaurs.

| I too picked up some Chainmail minis -- mostly gnolls, which is good thanks to the infamously-hard-too-get Harbinger gnoll. It is hard to recall through the misty mists of time, but I think the first booster I picked up was a Harbinger, and I think the rare was a Hound Archon.
I didn't *really* get hooked until GoL, however.

| | I've purchased metal minis here and there over the years, even back when they were actually made of lead. | I did pickup a Harbinger starter way back when and got a lot of the poorly painted/sculpted pieces and was not impressed so didn't persue it much from there (woe is me) until my son took an interest when Aberrations came out and my game group decided to start using the plastic minis regularly based off of what they saw.
First set we managed to finish off was Aberrations, surprisingly Dragoneye second, GoL next and Harbinger/Archfiends were about dead even until we broke down and finished them both with a large ebay purchase. Been going since then. | | You see! There ARE others out there just like me. What? Why are laughing?
