Afetr my first few shots I switched off my flash in order not to disturb anyone's game...which turned out to be a very bad idea since most of the pix were ruined. Still, a few of them are passable so here goes:

My Boys ready to take the field. For anyone who can't make it out that's an Eye of Gruumsh, 2 Orc Champions, a Mountin Orc, an Orc Spearfighter, and a pair of Orc Warriors.

My first battle commences...against my wife. Even if I win I lose…

After one round my boys are ready to rumble. Bring it on giant-scum!

My wife Shana looking happy (and doing that wierd shrug thing of heres that makes it look like she has no neck). Little knowing what is about to happen,

Giant sized trouble...for her.

OKay, it was right around now that I turned the flash off. These are the best pictures of a bad lot...

Shana's army enters the Field of Ruin...

...only to run into this.

Everywhere I look, Chraals, Chraal and more Chraals!

The best players in the country - literally - were there in teh form of a contingent from Montreal. Man I wish we had a scene half as active as they do. Good guys and good players, though I hope they stay home next year. [)]

In one match a combo of anxiety about the day (silly) and some crap in real life (not silly) led me to lose my temper against a guy named Sebastian. It was totally unnaceptable of me and I apologize, again, for my reprehensible, if momentary, outburst. No matter how much you say it was okay it wasn't. Sorry, man. Thank you for both being understanding and for a worthy match...even if you beat me you lucky sod. [)]

Even though I crashed and burned (I went 2:3 before I dropped) I had a good time. I did better than a feared but not as well as I had hoped. Met some new folks including some MaxMiniers - Xenozephyr, Sirohk and some whose names I can't recall. Sorry, guys, I have no head for names - from out of town (Quebec and New York State!). Our own Greyhaze had the unfortunate luck of pulling early against some of the area's strongest and "winningest" players and dropped after round 3 or 4.

There was a metric-ton of multi-chraal/human blackguard bands and marut/coautl combos. In fact I'd say that easily half, if not more, of the bands in play were varients of these two. A multi-chraal band beat me readily but the coautl/marut combo was less effective. I beat one of them down and ever-so-narrowly lost to a second one (it was decided on init and lucky rolls in the final round). So prepare yourself, guys. I forsee more of these combos at future qualifiers. Plan ahead and bring it home for MaxMinis!

Cheers! [:D]

BTW, does anyone have a proper tourney report for the day? Or even know who ultimately won it? Like I said, I dropped after 5 rounds so I am in-the-dark.

The one big downside was that Wizards forgot to send prize/entry support. It's okay for those of us who are local, hopefully (though not assuredly) we can get our swag by dropping in at the shop, but not so good for those who drove for hours and hours to get there only to go home without even a token for showing up. Its over in the tournament forum.

A guy named Marc won with a Rikka/dual JA build.
Nightmoor came in second with dual War Trolls.
Phrank and some other person came in 3-4th with Marut/CoO/SWs and Blackguard.

I am not gone.

So do i undertand this right you had to face your wife in Rnd 1 of your Q? that sucks hard... I can;t stand it when you travel to a tournament and you play the person that you play aginst the most in rnd 1. And to top if off it's your wife...

Someone mentioned in the Tournament thread that initial pairings are usually based off of last name. Wives vs. husbands and fathers vs. sons (don't hear too much about parents vs. daughters...) are very common first-round pairings.

Thanks for the pics, Sulaco. Interesting variant on the Eye/Champ band. I'm rather surprised you lost to dual-HGB, though. Eye/Champ bands have playtested well against dual-HGB in my experience.

I was sitting to Shana's right but I'm not in any of the pictures. You can see a small Sirohk over Shana's left shoulder in the fourth picture though! [:D]

Was nice to meet some MaxMinis folks though even if they were Canadians. [}:)][)] Ha. Sorry, I had to!

Actually I beat the dual-HGB band and one Coautl/Marut band. I came close to defeating the other Coautl/Marut (so, so close!) but lost by the skin-of-my-ass. I was completely smashed by a triple-Chraal/blackguard band and a 4 orc champ/tiefling captain band.

Qué será, será.

Yup, that's me in my match versus XenoZepher. Had a great time gaming and meeting the large contingent of folks at the tournament.

Great meeting you Sulaco and I dropped you an e-mail for future reference about your trip down this way.

Cheers,

Nice pics & write up.

Looks like a fun time.

I am really amazed that the tournament pairings is done by name [gasp].
