| The notes being "mixed up" might be some sort of clue.
Certainly alpinism does sound like the Mammoth rider - something having the experience/ability to negotiate snow covered mountains.
The taxidermy clue implies something being 'stuffed', but perhaps the "mixed up" might mean that the 'stuffing' is on the outside? Wrapping rather than stuffing?
I predict - an Uncommon Mummy.
(Of course, if I'm right with "mixed up" meaning "the other way around", then 'alpinism' would mean "valley walking". Hmmm.) | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. I read Wayne's theory on the other thread about the clue being an anagram. I think it's a long shot. If Shoe's comment is read as a standard cryptic crossword clue, then it would be taken as:
"taxidermy and alpinism though my notes may be a bit" mixed up.
That is, everything in quotes would form the anagram (strictly) - that's a long anagram. There are lots of creatures in there, including the Yuan-ti Abomination and the Amethyst Dragon.
The 'x' is the most interesting bit. But even there the 'x' creatures that might explain its presence (i.e. be in the anagram) include:
Elder Xorn Pixie Aleax Androsphinx Gynosphinx
For example, it's possible to get both the Amethyst Dragon and Gynosphinx out of the anagram. The trick is to make sense of the letters which are left [)]. Those letters, in this case, are daliimumtemihtbe, and I haven't been able to do anything with them [B)].
If mini names really are to come out of the suggested anagram text, then I'd expect three creature names to come out - and they might also be expected to match the asterisks Merric gave us. The theory is nice, but in practice it seems too elaborate - I don't see it working, so I don't think it's an anagram clue. | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. | Actually, if anyone can confirm the existence of a creature called "Hag Temptress" then I might look again at the anagram theory [:D].
From Merric's asterisk clues, there is a creature starting with X: X****, *** ** ***** (which I originally took to be X****, Son of Kyuss). If we knew what that X creature was, then it might be possible to test the anagram theory more fully. | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. Friend of (Non-Ugly) Fey. I had the same problem, Count. Aleax and Hex would also get rid of the X, but it's amazing how quickly you can run out of vowels [:)]. I also think it unlikely that there are, say, two creature names that would give so fantastic an anagram. Usually you need a lot of letters to get such great words as an anagram [)]. | | Champion of the Bodak.Knight of the Aboleth.Squire of Gnomes. Friend of (Non-Ugly) Fey. | Taxidermy (Greek for "the arrangement of the skin") is the art of mounting or reproducing animals for display or study. This is a practice generally done with vertebrates, but occasionally with invertebrate animals such as insects. The methods that taxidermists practice have been improved over the last century, heightening taxidermic quality.
Taxidermists may practice professionally, for museums, or as amateurs, such as hobbyists, hunters, and fishermen. To practice taxidermy, one must be extremely familiar with anatomy, dissection, sculpture, and painting, as well as tanning.
Taxidermy should not be confused with taxonomy, which is the study of scientific classification.
Hmm... Could this mean a "fleshy" creature of some sort? Maybe a new Flesh Golem (it's likely stuffed, too)? A preview for the Cadaver Collector does seem logical as all previews since the posting of Preview X have had at least one PX mini in it. I'd say that the alpine hint has something to do with the Tundra Scout. Maybe he isn't mounted, maybe he has just performed taxidormy on a mammoth and use it as a watch-tower? Well, looking at the actual words taxidermy (to stuff an animal for MOUNTING) and Alpinism (mountain climbing), I'm thinking both of these clues refer to the Frost Giant on Wooly Mammoth... And even the "mixed up" versions suggested by Humble Minion also fit the theory...

Bingo!
For those that aren't familiar with Alpinism, it's associated with mountaineering, particualarly in the Swiss Alps. As for the definition of Taxidermy: "The art or operation of preparing, stuffing, and mounting the skins of dead animals for exhibition in a lifelike state." Some of the most well known examples of taxidermy would be the stuffing of the Mammoth carcasses found in the Arctic Circle... | | Champion of the Aspect of Tempus | |
