Rochester, NY

Hi,

My name is Tom and I have enjoyed reading Maxminis' forums for the past year or so. I live in Rochester New York. I have played D&D for twenty-five years, mostly with the same group of people. I started collecting the mini's with Giants of Legend for D&D. I am a terrible painter so most of my metal figures are unpainted. I played my first skirmish when Abberations came out against myself. At this time I decided to collect more seriously so I could play some skirmish and my FLGS still had a couple of cases of Archfiends and Dragoneye. The last booster of Archfiends I opened had an LSD, lucky me. Because I work nights and have a rotating weekend (one month it is Friday & Saturday the next it could be Monday & Tuesday), and none of the local game stores were running anything I did not try to find local players. When Underdark came out I went to Syracuse, NY, to play in the pre-release because it is only ninety minutes from me. I went 1-4, with a medium silver dragon and a half-orc paladin, in that tournement but had a lot of fun; my second to last game was decided by initiative if I won I would probably kill his piece and win on points but my opponent won initiative and killed my piece and won on points. The next time I played was at the War Drums release and I went 3-2; my second opponent beat me on points but had an army that was over 200 points so I won that game. A month ago I walked into my FLGS and saw they were running a DDM 200 point constructed tourney that day, thier first DDM event. I hurried home grabbed my LE Quad (HH, Efreeti, Chraal, DC, Urthok) and went back. We ended up with four players and it was very casual. I only got to play two matches in the four hours I was at the store because one of the players is an employee and had other responsibilities, but I won both games and had fun. I played there again this last Saturday in a sealed draft against two other people. I decided to join Maxminis because of the post by Bshugg encouraging players to take responsibility for the success of their local game. I have also been talking to a few people at another FLGS (really a comic book shop) about DDM to try and build a better local seen.

I encourage all Rochester New York locals (and anyone from Buffalo or Syracuse that wants to drive an hour or so) to go to Millennium Games Saturday June 10th for 200 point constructed Tourney. If there are enough players it will be DCI sanctioned.

Here are some quick opinions on hot maxmini's topics
NOST = you can keep your secrets at least for a while it makes it more interesting.
leaks = good ones like warden of the woods yes, bad ones by violating NSD no, a little moderation in all things.
And last but not least GNOMES = I'm neutral not worked up about them either way but releasing some might prevent some mischief [)](you know the April 1st preview). I just don't know why they all looked like the guy in my front garden????

Finally I plan on being in Syracuse for the qualifier on June 24th and I hope to see some of you there and I have NOST (maybe)! I read somewhere that this was an easy qualifier or something like that [)].

Hi Tom and welcome to the Boards! ΖD]

I'm (the one person that I know of) from Buffalo (and originally from Rochester) and possibly (schedule depending) would love to come to a "local" DDM tournament in Rochester. First, where is Millennium Games? Its been many years since I lived there and I do not know that game store. Please forward a little more intel (via here or by e-mail), would be greatly appreciated.

Also, post your local Tournament intel (like said event) over on the Tournamnet thread. And, most importantly, post every tournament (and results if you have any) there also. You will increase the chance of getting bigger crowds (and DCI sanctioned [:D]).

I have a local FLGS but they do not run any DDM events yet (I am working on this, but schedule and summer are greatly hindering my efforts). Its amazing how fast mini's fly off the store shelves around here, yet I cannot find more than 1-2 DDM players. I shall not let failure bring me down!!!!

I do not think we met at the Syracuse Underdark or Wardrums release touranments (I was at both and I do not remember meeting a fello Rochesterian) so that was a shame [:(]. I do look forward to meeting at the Syracuse Qualifier and possibly the following week for the WotDQ pre-release tournament. [:p]

As you have plans for going to the Syracuse Qualifier (and beyond?), maybe we can hook up sometime before the event (like many of these other Maxminis folks do), especially if I do not make it to the June 10th event.

Anyways, keep posting, welcome, and great to hear from you. [^]

Cheers.

Matt (Sirohk) [)]

Way to go Tom! Thats the absolute best thing when a player steps forward and helps get things rolling. Send me your info to bshugg at hotmail and I will ship out some promos you can use to pass out to new players for demos or give away as prizes.

If half the people posting on Maxminis ran an event every month, DDM would be getting tons of support.

Looking for someone to cosponser a midwest DDM event. let me know if your interested!

A few pointers to get more people into the game:

Do you and a friend play the game? Go to a shop and play a game or two there. You don't even need to demo it to people or anything formal. Just people walking by will see and ask questions.

When ever your playing at a store ALWAYS put a few cool looking figures out next to you. Players are more likely to stop when they see a Huge Red Dragon and Behir on the sidelines watching the game.

If you got the extras, have a box of commons and uncommons that you don't care about. Anyone who asks what your doing and stays to watch for a minute is interested. Hand them a Howling Orc and let them know when and where you play and they may get hooked.

Have your store order the prize kits. If they won't offer to buy them yourself. If they still won't, tell them stores that get the kits sell a LOT more minis and books. Our group probably buys 2 cases of minis and 6-7 game books on an average play night. On days of tournaments that probably triples.

Put up fliers for minis games.

Find DnD groups that play in the area and visit them and ask them if they have tried DDM. Most haven't tried or even seen it played. Let them know that play groups trade minis and if you have the kits, they get figures for free just for showing up.

When new players show up, ACTUALLY play them! A lot of my local tournament players won't play against a new player. When they do they play their best tournament builds. They feel they are wasting their time if they aren't practicing. Build a few goofy or themed bands and keep them set aside for when new players show up. It will keep them coming back.

bshugg:

Great ideas / pointers. I will take all of this and try at my local FLGS to see if we can generate more interest in the DDM game. At least more than 2-3 players. [:p]

Two of us have played at the store a number of times (supposedly when others were to show up) and no one did. But the store owner keeps saying there ARE others interested, will run events, etc... SO, my next step(s) - apply some of your ideas / pointers to bring a greater number of players.

Thanks much. I'll relay results of the efforts if they are successful or otherwise.

Cheers.

Thanks much Tom (The Hev). [^] I definately know where the store is located (I'm an old Penfield guy and I used to hang out around that area).

Keep me posted on store Tournaments and I will try to make a few, pending my schedule. Maybe I can tie visiting some relatives with then stopping by for some DDM playing. Now theres a plan. [}:)]

Maybe, (and this is a vision) us Western NY folks can challenge the Syracuse folks to a "State" tournament. That would be cool. ΖD]

Believe me--ever since my most recent foray into the bowels of NOST-dom, I've grown leery of ever posting such a thing again.

But, I'm all for watching others get sucked into the madness.

Hey there,
This is Dan, I run the Syracuse events and was the judge at the pre-releases you mentioned. I'm bad with name but remember faces well so make sure and say hi at the Qualifier. I'll either be judging that or playing if I can't qualifier before then.

Just to let you know of some upcoming Syracuse events.

June 24th, Qualifier as you mentioned
July 1st, following weekend, WotDQ pre-release

later in July, possible the 15th but that's unconfirmed, we will be running a 500 pt constructed tournament. For the semi-regular monthly tournaments that we have started, the entry is $5 and we give out repaints and epic cards to all if we have enough, or as door prizes if we don't. And then we draft from boosters that the entry fees pay for.

August, possibly the 19th (we're aiming for the third saturday of each month), we will be running a 200 pt constructed game.

Then, sometime in either late september or october, we will be running a special tournament using the Colossal Red Dragon. We will have tables with me and some of "my players" ;) running CRDs and the players will have to see how well they do. Details to work out but once it gets closer I'll be posting more info on here.

Welcome again and see you at the end of June.

I'll let the Syracuse players know about the event in Rochester.

Hmm. I'd like to make a comment to this.

I joined MaxMinis right after the ChaoticGood incident(s). I read that this user had ripped off a whole mess of people with trades and that's all I knew. Just a couple of months ago I read that this CG user was actually from Syracuse, I was pretty surprised.

I personally do not know who this ChaoticGood user is/was. I know a few Syracuse players and I don't think that any of them is/was ChaoticGood but do I know for sure? No, not really. I never even thought to question it until I read recently that CG was from Syracuse.

I'm guessing that perhaps you were personally ripped off by this user? If so, I'm sorry for you but please do not besmirch all Syracuse players by posting something like this. I have put a lot of time and effort into making DDM work in Syraucse and I was pretty offended by this post which I feel, since it was very ambiguous, makes all of us who play in Syracuse look bad.

I'd like to second what XenoZepher has said. [^]

I have been to a number of Syracuse DDM events (closest for me here in Buffalo) and met and got to know a number of the Syracuse players. XenoZepher (he and I went to Toronto Qualifier together) and the others that I have met all seem like a great bunch of folks. [:)]

I was a newbie here on Maxmini's when C___ G____ was in the throes of his turning to the dark side and fortunately he did not get anything from me. I do not know if this person still resides in the Syracuse area or not, but I can say this - the DDM scene there is a growing a great group of players. XenoZeoher and the folks at the local FLGS have done a great job running & judging events. ΖD]

Just my $0.02 worth.

Heya WakeXX!

I'll will definately take you up on that offer some time. I do like to got to Erie with the family every once in a while - great place to visit with Waldemer and Presqisle.

How's the DDM scene there in Erie? Are there any local FLGS running DDM / DCI sanctioned events? My arm could be twisted a bit to get me down there for such events. Likewise, if I ever get my local FLGS to run some DDM events, I'll let ya know.

Are you going to the Pittsburgh Qualifier? I heading down there Friday night with said family. We're gonna stop at Golden Coral for dinner on way to the steel city.

Hope to hook up with you sometime.

Cheers.

Hey, I'm a pleyer from Buffalo, NY. Jester's Cap is trying to get a set time for games on Saturdays but there is very low turnout. I might be convinced to brave the I-90.

I'm really not into tournaments however, I prefer casual play.

Hello and welcome!

I'll be heading out that way in November for a work convention, I'll have to look this store up.

Finally, a fellow Buffalo DDM player! [:D]

I have been to Jesters Cap Games many times (Saturday afternoons in particular) looking for DDM players and I have not found many. We'll have to hook up there some time for some DDM gaming. I have mentioned elsewhere that I would like to start some sort of league or such at Jesters, but alas not too much interest or store support (yet). Bshugg had some great ideas (see above) for trying to garner interest at our local FLGS and I might have to give them a try. Drop me an e-mail sometime to let me know when you might be there.

Since I started this thread I have done a few things to start and build a better local scene, based on the suggestions by bshugg. I stopeed at two other stores to talk about DDM. One was a comic store that has a strong hero clix group on Sunday and I mentioned to them about DDM. The other was a game store and I talked to a few people playing warhammer who seemed uninterested in DDM. I did not put up fliers at these stores yet. I wanted to talk to the owners first, I was thinking of just putting my name, e-mail, and phone number as a contact.

I sorted through a mountain of unopened mini's for promo pieces to give to people that come by the games at the store and dusted of my Huge Red Dragon and Huge Gold Dragon for eye candy. I also talked to the guy at the store that started running the events and told him I wanted to help promote the game. I told him about the give away idea and he liked it. I asked him about the stores web site which is famous for not listing events and he said yeah he did not know what was up with that guy. I asked if he wanted me to post them on maxmini's and he said that was cool. So western New Yorkers and other visitors to the area can look for events to be posted in the tourney forum (the next event is 200 point constructed Sat. June 10th @ Noon at Millenium Games http://www.millenniumgames.com/index.php?option=displaypage&Itemid=52&op=page&SubMenu=.).

@Sirhok
I'm a Penfield native too, class of '82. I sure hope you can come on June 10th if not we can see about getting together before qualifiers on the 24th in Syracuse.

@bshugg
I just wanted to say thanks for the nudge to get more involved and all the great suggestions. The guy at the store has some prize support so I don't think we need any other stuff at this time. I will contact you if we do or when I have other question.

Heya the hev:

WOW and oh my [:0] the world just got a little smaller! Penfield, class of '81 myself (and we're giving away our age here).

I'm gonna have to dust off and open up that old 'Junction' yearbook and look up all of the Tom's and see if I can figure out who you are (although I think I remember already). [)]

Again, wow. Cool. Now I'll for sure have to make a trip to Rochester for some gaming. [:D]

Cheers.

Sounds like you've got the ball rolling already, congratz.

What time are you/us out-of-towners planning on getting into Syracuse for the Qualifiers? Maybe we could all meet for breakfast.

XenoZepher:

I don't know my plans yet, but I will definately send/post details when I firm them up. [)]

And that would be a great idea to meet for breakfast or such before gaming. [^] It would give all of us (New Yrok crew) a chance to meet, chat, and get to know eachother a little more. We usually do not have very much time during the tournament to chat and get to know anyone other than a hellow and a few pleasantries. [:D] So that's a great idea.

Ok, so Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse players should try to make the tourney in Rochester on the 10th. I think I can make it, but will need to confirm.

Now, I'll try to be at Jesters Cap this Saturday for open playing as well. Sirohk, can you do the same? I think 1:30 is the usual time. Can you bring any other players?

Sadly, the guy I used to play with has moved out to California.

I sent ya an e-mail message. This week is out for gaming at Jesters Cap and I suggested the 10th, but I forgot that there might be a local store tourney that day. We'll have to try and set up another time if there is that Rochester gig on the 10th. If not, I'll try to make it on the 10th to Jesters.
