| I don't like them now, but I think we should wait until we have the minis in hand and have the Monster Manual 4 before we dismiss them.
They are really better than Abishai for one big reason. All of the Abishai are basically the same. They even have exactly the same spell-like abilities. With the Slaadi, you can make an enemy "adventuring party" out of a green, blue and red. Some Slaadi are beatsticks, other spellcasters. But the Abishai are all boringly similar.
So the Dragonspawn are nice because they are similar to Slaadi in function. They are not traditional, but would it really be any better if they retconned the Abishai to work like the froggies? I don't think so.
I probably won't use them, but they are a much better idea than dear old WTF. | | It's deja vu all over again.

| | I'll definetely find a use for it. Since I usually DM in DL, I'll use it as a dragonspawn from DL. The Black Dragonspawn in Dragonlance are usually created in many different shapes, so this could be one of the abominations and such. So I definetely have a use for it. I actually think its one of the better ones we're getting. I mean the red one is just a red lizard, and the Blue Dragonspawn is a Huge, which for some reason I find annoying. So I'm pretty happy with this one. | | Champion of a Knight of Takhisis/Knight of Neraka | |

Blue Barney, Black Minotaur, Jurassic Redspawn... I shudder to think what the other two will be like.
Best case scenario for me, they'll be Common medium-sized soldier types which I would actually want in large numbers (or at all). Worst case... see "shuddering" above.

| Just a reminder: Pie comes in many shapes, sizes, colors, consistencies and flavors. If you think pie is 'good', you really need to distinguish between a boston cream pie, a cherry pie, a mincement pie or an 18 year old model. Each has a place, but they are not interchangeable. A problem with one pie is not necessarily going to be true of all pies.
Oh, and the same goes for dragonspawn.
Personally, I don't get all the hub-bub about the dragonspawn. They're new creatures. We know very little about them. Just like every monster in the MM III, it will take some time (years) before people accept them as a core part of D&D.
For RPG, they could still grow to be very popular. We have nto even seen the stats, yet.
For skirmish, they could be very strong or very weak, just alike any other figure. We'll need to wait and see how they pan out.
Based upon pure looks... well, you can draw your own conclusion. However, I must say that I thought the Chraal looked ridiculous when I first saw it in the MM III. Now, it seems pretty reasonable to me. Time will likely change (open-minded) perspectives on most of the MM IV monsters we see. | | Champion of Meepo _*_ Myztek on the Wizards Boards. _*_ (2206 DDM on 03/06/06) Please note: The use of the indicates an attempt at humor ... often a bad attempt. Indeed, don't throw/trade them away immediately. You can still do that in three years. Who knows, by then every campaign includes dragonspawn.

Yet, I see no pie.
You're starting to make me hungry... er, angry.
I don't like Dragonspawn either. And a MM III argument cuts little ice with me. I've been revising my Random Encounter Tables, and I found very little I can use in the MM III. I may not actually buy MM IV. So many monsters, so little time.
