I've been ranting a lot about WDQ lately. Some of it's born out of frustration with my internet connection/PC; but most of it stems from the set. So, I thought I should challenge myself to come up with a list of things that I like about the set. After all, even I can only be so negative for a portion of the time.

A) I like the Chainmail Equivs. I like them a LOT. It's refreshing to see that they've used sculpts as close to the Chainmail mini as possible so that future equivs won't be like the Bugbear/Bugbear Trooper (which is a much better match for the Bugbear Footpad). OK, so I'm a little weird about stuff like that. But let's not get sidetracked here. Chainmail Equivs=Thumbs Up!

B) In slight relation to the Chainmail aspect is the Hobgoblin aspect. Two Hobgoblins in a set is very nice. I'm not so keen on the monk, but it's highly useful for folks running RHoD (which I someday hope to run) and this is supposed to be about things I like and not things I nitpick. So, Two Hobgoblins=Thumbs Up!

C) Gnoll. This is a cross between the Chainmail and Hobgoblin things I like. While I would have liked a caster, or the oft-dreamed of Champion, I am still very pleased to get this one. More Gnolls (of any sort)=Thumbs Up! (And if we could get a dual-weilding Ranger or a spellcaster of some sort, I'd not complain about that, either!)

D) Dragons=Thumbs Up! Not the Fang dragon, not the Sorcerer on the Black, and not the Spawns, but the Small Uncommons, the Dracolich, the Large Green and the Aspects are much appreciated.

E) Hyenas and Wererats. Ok, so maybe the timing isn't the best (IMO) but both of these figs look sooo much spiffier than the originals. I may not need as many Wererats, but I'll take a dozen of the Hyenas. I think I'm going to repaint a Wererat Rogue to be an albino--It's probably an upcoming GMR or prize in a kit, but I'm going to do one anyway because it will look cool. The Hyenas just go along with the Gnolls in "C" above. Upgrades to appearances=Thumbs Up!

F) Trying new things. Ok, so I don't like the way some (ok, "all") of the new things turned out, but at least new things were tried. That's the second most important thing about products. The first is to learn from feedback. New Things=Thumbs Up!

G) Uncommon Huges. Wow, what a selection. An Elemental, Troll, D-Beast, Spider, Purple Worm and a Spawn. I think I'm more eager for the Uncommons than the Rares (maybe not the Spawn or the Troll so much, but the others)! Great Selection=Thumbs Up!

Well, that's about all I can come up with. To be honest, I thought I was going to have difficulty coming up with FIVE topics, and I made it to seven. Sure, I glossed over a couple "issues" I have, but those have been talked to death.

I have seven positive things from WDQ, and that's more than I thought.

I honestly dont want to be a naysayer, but while a lot of the peices look like Chainmail versions, remember there's still several peices that havent gotten an Equiv card. I think it would be amazing if they actually came threw on the Equiv cards to go along with the peices. I think Chainmail is just one of those things they've just shrugged their shoulders and figure they'll get to it when they do.

I love the fact that we keep seeing more that can sub in for them, and I really sincerely hope we see the chainmail cards coming. But I'm also not holding my breath, it would take some huge managerial effort to get the ball rolling, and I just dont foresee that happening.

But we can hope!

Its cool to try and be positiv even if the set didn't live up to your hopes. Don't know about anyone else but think that would have been damn near impossible without removing all the interesting models for the next huge set. Still nice that you can find so much stuff you do like about it.

Well, if I can find some things look positively upon, I'm sure others that aren't happy can too. I'm just a little uncomfortable with my level of negativity on some of my other posts. This is the first set that I've been this far down on.

Chainmail Equivs will get more support from WotC as more and more of us request it. Keeping it in the "eye" as it were is the best way to do that.

I thought about a similar idea to the include the equiv card with the mini last night as I drifted off to sleep: Why not include the note on the card itself where the "flavor text" is? For example the Hobgoblin Talon of Tiamat would include a line similar to "Also for use with the Chainmail Hobgoblin Adept".

That doesn't address the issue of multiple figures as well as I would like, but only one card is necessary for official play...

Chainmail equivs = Yay! One less mini to try and collect [:D]

Huge Uncommons = Yay! Fire Elementals and Purple Worms [:D]

I'm happy with the hyena (even though I already have two hyena sculpts) just because it can serve as yet another type of mount for my goblin wolf/worg/hyena riders [:D]

For the sake of those of you who have chainmail stuff, I hope all the equivalencies that have DDM already get their cards made available soon. I don't (and haven't ever) owned any chainmail stuff. But, I can root for you guys that do have the stuff.

For the most part, the sculpts look good, even if I don't agree with/care for some of their choices. Credit where credit is due.

I also love the huge uncommons. They made absolutely great choices with these- it may be enough to keep me buying more and more boosters this time around (which hasn't happened in a long time). I'm especially happy with the Huge Fire Elemental and Huge Fiendish Spider.

While I don't like Blue Barney, I am happy that DDM and D&D is moving forward with new ideas and concepts. I know a lot of us, myself included, mostly request "classics" from MMI. It's good to have new directions to take our games and to see the creation of new figures that 15 years from now will be "classics" (although I'm not so sure if blue barney will make that cut...).

I'm REALLY happy with the selection of minis from Races of the Dragon. The Dragonborn, Spellscales and Dragonwrought Kobold are all very cool. Well done.

I'm happy with a lot of the figures in this set:
The dragons are simply fantastic. I love the large green and the dracolich, the Small Copper & Small Black are welcome additions, and even the Fang Dragon is fun.

OK, I'll bite. Since this set seems to me to be my least favorite yet (yes, least favorite -- even worse than Aberrations), I'll try to go for some positives.
Keep in mind these are based completely on visuals from the poster and simply what the creatures are, with no knowledge of skirmish (or RPG in many cases) stats.

1) The Aasimar Fighter and Dragonborn Fighter look cool; I could use a good number in some sort of large-scale encounter.

2) The Slaughterstone Eviscerator looks very good for my RPG game.

3) If it weren't for what appear to be breasts, the War Weaver would have made an excellent figure for the sorcerer whose nickname became my username.

4) The Huge Fire Elemental looks pretty (dang) cool.

5) Blackguard on Nightmare, Doom Fist Monk, Large Green Dragon & Cadaver Collector -- some new LE skirmish love?

6) Purple Worm -- the one huge that I've actually wanted!

7) Dracolich -- OK, this one is cool too.

8) Stirge -- who doesn't want like 30+ of these?!?

Well, I guess that's a bit more than I expected to come up with -- but the thing is, almost everything I did not mention I could almost do without completely. Sad.

I can't wait to get me claws on the true dragons, the dracolich, and the aspects. The dragon-blooded will also be good to have. I do wish the Dragonborn was uncommon, though.

I like the uncommon huges, but the blue barney will always be on the "outs" for me. Some things just can't be helped, I guess.

I love the stirge, but I stand by my opinion that a huge set was a terrible choice to release this critter in. It's simply too popular, and will be desired in swarms by too many people. This really should have been a common tiny in a regular, non-huge set. Maybe the only common tiny ever to be released (if it had happened), but it really would have meant a lot to most of us.

I feel the same way about the diseased dire rat, except I really wasn't interested in another rat. It was a pain to track down the original dire rat, and its "replacment" is in yet another huge set. I would have slotted this one in a regular set as well.

Most of my gripes are about the fact a few minis were placed in a huge set, not that they were made.

I've been complaining too, so I should also speak up about what I like.

For the most part, the huge uncommons are great choices. 5 out of 6 aint too shabby, and I have to remind myself that the Barneyspawn might actually be viable in Skirmish. If it turns out to be some sort of top-tier beast somehow, I can overlook its godawful (pun intended) appearance, or maybe even paint it purple and green.

The huge rares are nothing I want in multiples, and nothing I absolutely gotta have, while at the same time all being cool enough that I won't be disappointed pulling any of them out of a booster. That works out really well for me. (The Dracolich is my favorite, but I won't break the bank to get one.)

Most of the minis look really good. Some of those paint masters are just spectacular, and if the production minis all look as excellent as the Dracolich, then the WD paint jobs and Tordek will be pretty much forgiven.

Some of the commons would have gone better in a regular set, but it's still nice to see a new Dire Rat, especially one that looks so gnarly.

There are some great PC minis, as others have already pointed out.

There's a gnoll, and that's always good. This one looks really funky because of the template, but still pretty cool.

The Blackguard on Nightmare, while I do think it could look a little better, is still very cool. It's a great concept, and I hope it's much more tourney-worthy than the Mounted Paladin.

The Large Green Dragon looks good, and might be very cost effective.

The Talon of Tiamat might be the closest thing to the Hobgoblin Blackguard that's been on my wish list for so long.

There's a common pirate for our current campaign.

There's an uncommon ogre, even though it does look kinda funny.

Mine is an evil laugh! Muhahahaha!

Possibly. However, I don't see any Chainmail Orc Champs being any easier to find than the Archfiends one. You can get Ogres and Centaurs, and Gnolls all over the place but a Chainmail Orc Champ or Elf Pyro? Don't see too many of those around.

What most I like about WotDQ:
1) Large green dragon
2) Huge fire elemental
3) Huge dracolich
4) Huge troll
5) Stirge
6) Tavern brawler (great for commoner bystanders) and Cloudreaver (a pirate!)
7) No orcs or drow (not that I don't like orcs and drow, we just needed a breack from them)
8) Gnoll, kobolds, hobgoblins and troglodyte (other "humanoids" needed some love)
9) Nice PC minis (bonded summoner, warden of the wood, war weaver, etc.)
10) Other good commons (twig blight, diseased rat, hyena)

Zoroaster has a great list there - I second it.
Only I might make the Tavern Brawler and the great PC minis numbers two and three after the LGD.

Not sure about anyone else but:

1 - I REALLY like the Frost Giant on Mamoth! More fire & frost giants = YAY!

2 - Golden Protector. Looks enough like a Lammasu that i aint complaining, and a Lammasu is a CLASSIC D&D monster = YAY!
3 - Gnoll = monster with missle weapon = YAY!

4 - Elementals = YAY!

5 - PURPLE WORM!!!! = YAY

6 - Griffon Rider. Way cool pose, mounted mini, flyer = YAY!

7 - No Drow and only 1 Dwarf = YAY!

8 - Tiamat = YAY!

9 - The Stirge! Just another CLASSIC old school D&D monster. We got quite a few of those this set, and that = Double YAY!

10 - Pre-painted D&D miniatures are still going strong after 10 sets...waited 20+ years for these = YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!

Grey Elf Wizards are still obtainable in most cases--you just have to get the combo box.

Orc Champions, on the other hand, are nigh impossible to find--let alone obtain for less than $20.

I think zoroaster100 has summed up nearly everything I like about the set - except that I would add that the Small minis in this set are particularly good. I think the selection of Smalls is the best of any set so far.

What I like about War of the Dragon Queen:

1. THE DRAGON QUEEN! - Not only Tiamat, but her opposite number, plus the Spawn and Dragonborn. We have enough figures on both sides that the set actually lives up to its name, rather than just having a few unrelated figures of the same type.

2. All the Spawn are together. I don't care for them yet, but at least they won't be drawn out over several sets - they're here, they're Spawn, deal with it.

3. Rounding out some lesser racial groups. More Kobolds and Trogs weren't really needed, but more Yuan-Ti, Gnolls, Goliaths, Lizardfolk and such are welcome.

4. DRAGONS! 'Nuff said.

5. The Fire Elementals look stunning! I just hope they're this good in hand.

6. And other stuff.

If any of you have read my posts, you know that I have been a harsh critic of mounted minis and all the dragon spawn. Well, I still think they are horrible, but I wanted to give props to WOTC for what I think they did right in this set.

1. The PC type minis is this set are fantanstic. The bonded summoner and warden of the wood are gorgeous. The tavern brawler is a great concept and looks real good for a common. This set has the best PC minis of any set yet.

2. The traditional humanoids are all upgrades over what we have seen previously. The gnoll archer, the wererat, the lizardfolk, hobgoblin, an yaun-ti are all superb. Even the ogre has really grown on me.

3. The detail on these minis is awesome. I can't imagine ever using the frost giant on the wolly mammoth, but it is so pretty I might keep one anyway.

4. Clear plastic. With the exception of the elf archer, there is no figure where this feels thrown in. Mainly it is used in all the right places and to great effect.

5. Taking chances with minis. Although the effort didn't pay off in the griffon rider, I admire that the sculpters are willing to take some chances on more dynamic poses.

6. They have demonstrated that they are listening to us (whining is good!). Meepo, pirates, twig blights, displacer beast pack lord, and others are clear evidence that they value and use our feedback. Even though I dispise them, I know many people called for mounted figures and I respect that they were included. I just wish they could have kept it to two or three in this set.

This set rates in the bottom half of sets in my opinion, but there is still plenty to like. I preordered two cases. Since there are many figures I want numerous copies of and several I don't want at all, I figure to be a pretty active trader come July (unless I get real lucky with my pulls).

Well, I'm overall pretty impressed by the set. Though even when there are minis that probably will see no use in my campaigns (like the tundra rider), I still like the looks of them. I love the dragons, the displacer beast, the elementals, the griffon rider, the purple worm and even some of the spawn (the green one).
