| If I were in charge of Blood War... what would I put in the set?
Nah, that's not the right question. Of course I would fill the set with all the missing devils and demons and yugoloths and so on, but that's not how the sets are made. Coming up with a set list requires careful consideration, analysis of previous sets... and lots and lots of time. You want the set to appeal to as broad of an audience as possible, so you have to please all three main groups: Role-Players, Collectors, and Skirmishers.
For role-players, you must include miniatures usable as PCs of many different races and roles. Dungeon Masters require monsters, but you can't go overboard with "classic" monsters. If you focus too heavily on the set theme, you lose customers that aren't interested in that theme.
Collectors want minis that look cool. Fortunately, WotC has recently mastered the use of clear plastic, which should greatly improve the look of certain minis.
And finally, Skirmishers want new minis to fill the same old roles: beaters, titans, tech, scouts, and so on. They also like synergy, especially within the set itself (since it helps in Sealed tournaments).
----------------------------------------------
There are 12 Common, 24 Uncommon, and 24 Rare minis in the set - which is a standard distribution for a non-huge, non-starter set.
There is one small Rare, 11 large Rares, 8 large Uncommons, 1 tiny Uncommon, and 1 large Common.
2 minis are mounted. We don't want too many, since some people (*cough*CountDooku*cough*) don't like mounted minis.
There are 2 Aspects. Again, some people love them and some hate them... 2 sounds about right.
11 minis are PC types (humans, elves, half-elves, gnomes, tieflings, and dwarves). There are 5 animals (or animal proxies). 12 Humanoids include the frequently requested lizardfolk (2) and kuo-toa (2), as well as a gnoll spellcaster that rounds out our collection of gnolls.
There are 16 "classic" monsters (including 2 true dragons - one small and one medium), as well as remakes (with different names and skirmish stats) of 2 highly sought-after creatures from Harbinger. There is also a plethora of interesting new monsters from various Monster Manuals.
Oh, and just about all monster types are represented: fey, oozes, dragons, elementals, constructs, undead, humanoids, monstrous humanoids, giants, magical beasts, animals, and, of course, outsiders. I couldn't fit any plants, though.
3 minis in the set are unique, but all of them can sub for generic creatures in a pinch. There are altogether five campaign setting-specific minis in the set (2 Forgotten Realms, 2 Eberron, and 1 Greyhawk); this includes one of the listed uniques, and one of the Aspects. The others can work really well in just about any campaign.
7 minis contain (or are made of) clear plastic, including two uncommons and one rare that are likely to sell for astronomical prices on the secondary market.
Roughly 20 minis fit the set theme, either as devils, demons, their mercenaries, or those who fight to preserve their lands from the conflict. Another 6 minis are related in some way (being outsiders and such).
8 of the Rares have additional Epic cards. There are 8 Uncommon commanders to ensure that you'll always have a commander in Sealed.
In creating the set list, I've used 23 (!) different WotC sources.
----------------------------------------------
So, without further ado ([:D]), I give you... the set list. I recommend that you download the list in Excel format, since it contains detailed info for all minis, and picture links for most. If you don't have Excel on your computer, Microsoft offers a free Excel Viewer application.
But for the sake of discussion (and quoting), here's the list as well:
Astral Deva Blink Dog Dark Lantern Dwarf Gatecrasher Eludecia, Succubus Paladin Half-Elf Archivist Knight of the Chalice Maug Ramadeen Shadowbane Stalker Dwarf Berserker Healer on Unicorn Aspect of Selûne Cleric of Dol Darn Ferocious Blood Hawk Feytouched Druid Gnome Master of Shadow Nycter Pseudodragon Small Brass Dragon Vivacious Dire Tiger Whisper Gnome Fiend Hunter Consecrated Harrier of Wee Jas Human Kensai Gelatinous Cube Lizardfolk Druid Lizardfolk Raider Annah, Tiefling Rogue Mud Slaad Acheronian Hobgoblin Mercenary Bearded Devil Shock Trooper Black Abishai Cranium Rat Swarm Deathbringer Durzagon Cleric of Laduguer Harssaf Ice Devil Kuo-Toa Monitor Large Water Elemental Rejkar Small Water Elemental Umbral Displacer Beast Mezzoloth Nycaloth Abyssal Ghoul Aspect of Yeenoghu Dark Stalker Demonic Gnoll Shaman Dracotaur Rager Eclavdra Fensir Fey'ri Sorcerer Fiendish Large Viper Githyanki Anti-Paladin Marilith Rutterkin Sea Mother Whip Skeletal Troll Wendigo White Dragon
EDIT: Gah, somehow the Marilith got left out after one of the cut/paste operations. I put her back in place of the Large Shadow Dragon. That makes one less dragon, and one less clear plastic mini (accounted for in the analysis above). | | Hypethetical Blood War Set List | Champion of the Gelugon | Vindicated Prophet of Blood War Ha 69/80 | De 60/60 | Ar 57/60 | GoL 72/72 | Ab 60/60 | DK 60/60 | AF 60/60 | UD 59/60 | WD 57/60 | WDQ 3/60| BW Total DDM Count: 1037 | No chance of finishing the set | Will finish the set | Set | |

| I could live with a set like that.
I don't think three uniques would be very well received, so I would drop "Annah." (I don't mind the concept of a Succubus Paladin -- at least it has no Vrock.) | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis SOFTWARE: PC | PC (free) | MAC

| There were sets with way more than three uniques. Recently, Underdark had three uniques, and this set was made to be comparable with Underdark. Besides, Annah is a female tiefling rogue, which is something we don't have yet (despite the fact that rogue is the tieflings' favored class).
I am surprised you didn't suggest to drop Eclavdra, her being a drow and all. | | Hypethetical Blood War Set List | Champion of the Gelugon | Vindicated Prophet of Blood War Ha 69/80 | De 60/60 | Ar 57/60 | GoL 72/72 | Ab 60/60 | DK 60/60 | AF 60/60 | UD 59/60 | WD 57/60 | WDQ 3/60| BW Total DDM Count: 1037 | No chance of finishing the set | Will finish the set | Set | |

| | I can live with one or two drow in a set. It's the half-dozen that annoys me to no end. Besides, she has a hell (pardon the pun) of a lot of history in Greyhawk. Toss in the fact she appears in the ELH, and she will be (or should be) a good Epic mini to have. | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! | Hmm, as for your edit by neglecting the Marilith, I think I would have dropped the Dracotaur instead of the Large Shadow. Since all of the sets now have at least one large true dragon, it would make more sense to drop the creature with the dragon subtype.
I have to defend the true dragons after all! [)] | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis SOFTWARE: PC | PC (free) | MAC

| | Well, Dracotaur is not high on my "want" list, but I figured he was less desirable than the Large Shadow, so I left him to account for "baffling set choices." [)] BTW, I planned for the Large Shadow to be made out of clear plastic (similar to the Umbral Displacer Beast), but that may not be viable yet, depending on how flexible the clear plastic is. If it's harder than regular plastic, it may be difficult to make the wings look right. | | Hypethetical Blood War Set List | Champion of the Gelugon | Vindicated Prophet of Blood War Ha 69/80 | De 60/60 | Ar 57/60 | GoL 72/72 | Ab 60/60 | DK 60/60 | AF 60/60 | UD 59/60 | WD 57/60 | WDQ 3/60| BW Total DDM Count: 1037 | No chance of finishing the set | Will finish the set | Set | |

| | There are three demons (succubus, marilith, rutterkin), three devils (bearded devil, black abishai, ice devil), two yugoloths, one aspect, and two tieflings (Annah and the Fey'ri). I'd certainly like to see more (and I hope I'm wrong in my prediction), but I had to be realistic. | Hmm, I think we both overlooked something as far as trends go:
WotC have been using an alternating pattern for true dragons. DK had the Large Blue Dragon (let's assume living dragons only). Anglefire, the Large Copper Dragon. Underdark, the Large Deep. War Drums, the Large Bronze. WotDQ, Large Green and Fang. I would think Blood War would have a Large good dragon (assuming they continue the trend) and my pick would be a Large Brass (no large or greater CG dragons since Angelfire).
I'm thinking WotC will wait a bit for the Large Gold, since it's the only non-Garg/Col gold they have left to release. However, I would *love* to be proven wrong about this.... Of course the Pit Fiend can't be in Blood War! It has to be in Unhallowed to follow the trend of the Balor appearing in Underdark! [)] | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC! SERVER: irc.psionics.net CHANNEL: #maxminis SOFTWARE: PC | PC (free) | MAC

| Not too bad of a set list but to be honest while there a re a few things in there I would really like such as Eludecia Succubus Paladin, Healer on Unicorn, and the Gelatinous Cube there's an equal or greater number I'd be fairly neutral on at best.

| I think Sammael has done a good job with this list. I especially like the Umbral Displacer Beast and Blink Dog, especially with the racial enemies inthe same set. The Knight of the Chalice was also a clever choice.
No Large Dragon, though?
The Demonic Gnoll Shaman could be instead the Gnoll Cleric from Chainmail- the demonic template fits the set theme, but it would be cool to have the Aspect and Cleric of Yeenoghu in the same set.
Two Gnomes is about right. The only problem with these two is that they might not have the typical brightly colored gnome wardrobe, but that's fine. | | Mine is an evil laugh! Muhahahaha! -Wash, Firefly | |

| Interesting choices....
Strangely enough, there were a few I'd not be happy to have:
Dwarf Gatecrasher (that outfit just hurts!) Cranial Rat Swarm (too weird) Aspect of Selune (really boring sculpt if based on the picture)
Of course, that was based primarily on the accompanying picture. If they could look a lot better, I'd be happier.
Maybe it's my innate cynicism, but I think you're a little optimistic in a few areas: Three gnolls? (including aspect) - I'd expect probably 2 max Two kuo-toa Two water elementals Two gnomes
As none of those have been common in past sets, nor fit the set theme, I doubt they'd start placing multiples of these highly requested figures in a set.
However, I must applaud your effort, organization, and well thought-out, balanced, (and plausible) list! | |

| | It's well-thought-out set, I must say. You've clever put in the three most common "blood war troopers" -- that is, rutterkin, mezzoloths, and bearded devils, which we can only hope will be the case in the real Blood War set. I'd like to see an uncommon Vrock, but aside from that, it's a great set design -- I'd certainly buy a lot of it. | | Champion of the Aboleth, Prophet of Denizens. | If an Abashai is present, I'd wager on it being blue. Black dragon-themed minis have gotten a whole lot of love lately (gargantuan, huge with sorcerer, blackspawn). Plus, with the trend of including minis from RHoD, the blue is a natural choice.

| I really like the Demonic Gnoll Shaman. Although I would probably change the Succubus from Eludecia (*gahk, spit*) and just make her a normal Succubus and change the Demonic Gnoll Shaman to Jangir, Demonic Gnoll Shaman.
I like that idea even better. And Jangir would be a prime candidate for Epic status, too.

| 13 new creatures from MM1, not bad. Some rehashes are O.K.. Still no mephits. All in all, not a bad fantasy set list.
BTW, why "vivacious" dire tiger? We don't have a dire tiger that we'd need to somehow distinguish the "vivacious" one from.

Yes ! This was probably the best setting they did for 2nd edition. | Bingo. And Meepo, Dragonlord (or whatever) certainly set precedent for "reformed" evil creatures.
IMO, Eludecia should look just like a regular succubus, with an addition of a greatsword. Use a chainmail bikini similar to Rikka's, and we're set as far as American decency standards go.
As for multiple creatures of the same type, that was actually based on Shoe's statement during Winter Fantasy. WotC intends to group similar minis and publish them the same set (hence the warforged in War Drums and the spawn in War of the Dragon Queen). We had two trogs in Underdark, after all.
As for the large true dragon, I actually considered the true dragon progression and came to the conclusion that WotC takes a break from large chromatic/metallic dragons in their fall set. After WDQ, we'll have an equal number of large chromatics and metallics (3 of each), and I think they want to spread the remaining four as thin as possible. Hence, I don't think there will be a large metallic dragon in Blood War. If there is a large dragon, I bet it'll be a "second-tier" true dragon, like the Large Shadow Dragon I originally listed. Another possibility is one of the planar dragons, such as the Rust Dragon or Styx Dragon.
I am pretty convinced that we'll get one CG and one CE Aspect in Blood War, because both previous sets had LG and LE Aspects. | | Hypethetical Blood War Set List | Champion of the Gelugon | Vindicated Prophet of Blood War Ha 69/80 | De 60/60 | Ar 57/60 | GoL 72/72 | Ab 60/60 | DK 60/60 | AF 60/60 | UD 59/60 | WD 57/60 | WDQ 3/60| BW Total DDM Count: 1037 | No chance of finishing the set | Will finish the set | Set | |

| A great amount of fantasy in Sammael's list.
2 water elementals AND two gnomes in the same set? Bwahahahahahahaha!!!!
Sorry, that strikes me as improbable bordering on impossible. Granted, it would also bolster Blood War to my new favorite set [:D]
A Vivacious (bubbly, energetic, enthusiastic) Dire Tiger? That's funny. Does it tell jokes and talk really fast? Or did you, perhaps, mean Voracious (insatiable appetite) Dire Tiger? [)]
We need more dwarves in bondage gear with whips (I am their champion, after all) before silly things like berserkers and gatecrashers [:P]
Overall, that's not a bad list. Not my first choices in a lot of cases, but reasonable assumptions were made.

| Ha! Watch them really stump us:
They'll make a "young" purple worm that's really large, but it's made with a medium-sized base! [:P]
Sammael: Either way, "Good" is up as far as the next Large True Dragon. If I had to choose from "other" dragons, I'd go for a Gem Dragon, a Large Radiant Dragon, or a Large Oceanus Dragon (NG, unless my memory is faulty). | | Trade & talk in real time on IRC!
