| Ok, this is going to come off as me ranting & whining, but it's all in good fun.....or is it
I just got my cases of Unhallowed and saw the new minis for the first time today. I need to let the world know....I hate the new Displacer Beast!
I hate every single thing about it from a collector/RPGer point of view.
I hate the pose.
I hate the size.
I hate the sculpt.
I hate the paintjob.
I hate the way it looks exactly like a Panther with 6 legs & tentacles.
I hate the way the mouth hangs open like it does.
I hate the paw that reaches out as if he's attempting to shake my hand and say, "Hello good sir, my name is Tralfaz & I'll be your combat encounter for the evening."
I hate how it looks nothing like the Harbinger DB or the pictures from the Monster Manual & Dragon/Dungeon mags.
I hate the fact it's a rare.
I hate the fact that I pulled more of them from my cases than I did most other rares.
I hate how it looks more 'cute' than 'scary'.
I hate how it looks sitting next to the Harbinger DB.
I hate knowing that if I used it in a game along with the Harbinger DB, my players will laugh at the Unhallowed DB.
I hate the fact that it's probably going to decrease the value of the Harbinger DB when I spent so much money/minis buying & trading for my HB versions.
I hate how this piece of turd resculpt wasted a slot in Unhallowed so gamers can easily make a pack for the DB Pack Lord. Don't get me wrong; I was excited to hear about a resculpt so people can make a pack...but I didn't realize it would be a resculpt of Guenhwyvar.
I hate that manpower was wasted designing this mini when those employees could have left work early instead.
I hate not knowing if I should hate its worthiness for skirmish play.
I hate how this DB sucks so bad that it made me consider writing a thread about how much I hate it.
That's it for now. When I saw this thing for the first time, I actually had to go pull out my Harbinger DB just to feel better. I really like everything about the HB version, not so much this one!

| I don't have the same feelings about it, maybe because I don't own a HB displacer beast, but in comparison it looks like its spent some time in the gym & then supplemented with steroids & displacer beast growth hormone. Yes he definitely looks juiced up compared to the HB one. I still think its interesting that the DBMH is rare, original is rare & the pack lord is uncommon? oh well. | | Champion of Minsc & Boo

I hate the fact that they make this piece so you can run a pack of them with the DB Pack Lord, then make it a rare, so that it'll cost you through the nose, to get enough for a pack! One of Unhallowed pieces that really should have been a U/C.
It being big 'n beefy is easier to accept then this issue.

| Yeh, it's okay to hate a mini. I agree with most of what you've said. I think it's a good sculpt on it's own, but they set two precidents that they should've stuck with.
1) It's not a panther with 6 legs, it's an aberration like slender creature, look at the DBPL, they don't match at all. 2) Scale, the scale is enourmous, I guess this DBMH is inbetween the DBPL and the DB while it's growing up.
I don't mind the sculpt, other than the precidents set out before hand. Making it Rare was just silly. | | Greyhaze's DDM Spoilers Champion of a Medium Dog & then a Darkenbeast , Raistlin Majere, Nightmare WDQ25/60, Warduke WD60/60, Anti-Champion of Guns, "Knight of Bugbears", and Joke Champion of Venger. | I'm not a big fan either....I don't have one and, even though it's currently on my want list, I'm still not sure I want one. One would just make me want more to run encounters with, even if it's a hideous mockery of a DB, and I'm beginning to think proxying would be just fine, as opposed to $80 to get a pack of minis that shoulda been Uncommon in the first place.
It all goes back to the whole "They'll take it as a rare, because they'll be so grateful to get it in the first place" theory, which will be proved once again when they finally re-release an Umber Hulk. | | Oh, what sad times are these when passing ruffians can say "Ni" at will to old ladies. -Roger the Shrubber

| See to me the new DB is much more like what a DB should look like. Not that emaciated piece of crap from Harbinger. That said I have always hated the DB as a monster so couldn't care less if it was remade. And what is all this about "wasting" rare slots? The uncommon slots have always been, for me, where the sweet minis are (oh Stormrage Shambler how I love thee). Rares are just minis I don't have to bother collecting because so many of them suck or are just PC/NPC types.

Yes and no. Originally it was just that - a six-legged
panther with tentacles - but 3e took a less literal tack. They made the
appearance of the D-Beast - and "mash-up" creatures like the manticore
- unique but in a manner that somone in the world who encountered it
for the first time would likely describe it as "a panther with 6 legs
and tentacles" - or in the case of a manticore "a lion's body with the
head of a man and wings of a grat bird" - in much the same manner that
real-world explorers described girraffes as "the offspring of camels
and leopard" or elephants as having "a snake growing from the head."

| i dont own one yet but i have 1 in the mail coming my way and i did see it at the pre-release. i love everything about it including that its a rare. I like the size creep of D&D mins. the old one looked like a mangy cat that just came out of a trash can. it was too small as were many mins from that first set especially the goblins, hobbits and gnomes. i dont have a problem with the paw raised as many of the dragons made so far have similiar poses and they are more of a staple in D&D and the outrages has not been as severe. the cover art shows the displacer beast attacking the half orc monk and it looks bigger than the habinger one. its a panther with legs and tentacles. Looks nothing likef Guenhwyvar. I have no probelm with man power on this min as the owlbear might have been done by the same people and i love that 1 as well. the old displacer beast is obsolete in todays skirmish so that doenst bother me either. If it decreases the value of the old one than sell the new one and buy more old ones while they are cheap . Make your players happy.

| I actually dislike the DBPL's emaciated look more than this. In fact, I think this is exactly what a displacer beast should look like. They are hunters; they should look like they can catch something. They only thing I don't like is that they changed the look in 3E that made it more emaciated and that the first two DBs look like that, rather than the new one. The Pack Lord looks like it hasn't eaten in a month. The new one, while not the scariest pose, at least looks like it has the muscles to tear something apart. Size-wise, I think it fits the model of a large creature. The large figures have gotten a little bigger, but I think they are more to scale with what large figures should be.
The ones that bother me more (as if I ever really get bothered) are something like Strahd, as a medium-based figure, taking up a large amount of space. For the most part, scale has gotten better in my opinion. | | Vindicated Champion of Green Slaad Champion of the Feyr Correct Unhallowed Called Shot - Bone Naga Night Below Called Shot - Skulk

| I Never fought D-Beasts in D&D. Given that the Uh D-Beast is a rare it's equally likely I'm not going to ever use a D-Beast against PC's. The only the thing that I Hate about the Uh D-beast and the D-beasts we have seen, is that the Pack leader us Uncommon and the other two are Rare. | | Pathetic Earthlings.
