Ok, I just figured out how to get Vassal to start the board at the size you want. It's actually very simple, so I'll give step-by-step how to do it. It does require editing the Mod, so whenever a new Mod comes out, you'd have to do this again.
Here's how to edit the starting board size:
1. Edit the DDM mod. Open Vassal like normal, but instead of "Play Module" do "Edit Module" from the very first menu. Select the DDM mod as normal.
2. Navigate the editor. When you open the mod, you'll see a small editing box pop up, as well as a normal version of the game in another window. Click on the little icon to the left of "Map [Map Window]" to show it's contents. Then, double-click (or right-click and select "Properties") on "[Zoom capability]".
3. Change the "Starting zoom level". The "Starting zoom level" should be set at 1 currently. To get the value you want, just add the number of times you have to hit the zoom out button to get the size you like. For example, I used to always zoom out four times as soon as I got a new game board, so the appropriate starting level for me would be 5. Enter the appropriate value, and hit ok.
4. Save. The icon to save the change you made is in the upper left-hand corner. Click that and you're done!

| Has anyone taken the time to write down, step by step, the method for PBEM?
I've just been playing around with the thing, and I can get what I've saved to reload. I start a new game, do the logfile, and then save the game, and end the logfile. I go and open up that logfile (continuation of game?) and all I get is an empty dialog box, and an empty map grid.
Errrr.....
I'm sure I can figure it out, but I hate to waste a couple more hours on this...

| Just a few advanced tips that I've come across while using Vassal myself:
An addition to Dagni's Post: I use zoom 8, on my screen that lets me see almost the entire board and some of the Offboard without having to use the nav bars.
What's the Offboard you say? The offboard is the white area around the right and bottom of the map that shows up only when you zoom out far enough. This area works just like the map but it is a blank white field. You can drop minis, tiles, and markers here. It is very useful when you are dragging all your guys from the Placeables window onto the map, and can also be used as a kind of graveyard to drop dead guys instead of deleting them. I have also found that when zoomed in I can sometimes drop guys from the board onto the right edge of the map where the row numbers are, but this does not always work.
Another useful feature of Vassal that I found by accident is the area selection box. If you click on an open spot on the map or offboard area, you can drag a red box around as much area as you want. This will select a group of figures, just like you might do in your windows explorer. Now you can drag this group and drop it anywhere you like. I use this at the beginning of the match to take all my figures from offboard to my starting tile, making the warband placement phase go a lot quicker for me.
One other quicky: If you right click on an open area on the map, the map will re-centre on the spot you clicked, so you can speed around on the map after it is zoomed in.
Happy gaming!

Couldn't see maps because wasn't aware of the need to "Synchronize" with another player. I seem to have it working now.

bshugg:
Finally found the old copy to update, here's my old guide UPDATED.
There is a simple to use and accurate to the actual game program for playing DnD miniatures online. The program is called VASSAL. Here’s how to get the DnD mini program running:
You need to download and install 3 files. One of these is a .zip file which is a shrunk down file. If you don’t have a unzipping program you can get one here: http://www.winzip.com/ get the evaluation version and its free. Once you have that then you need to get these three things in order to fully install the program:
1. Java runtime environment 2. Vassal engine 3. DnD skirmish module for the vassal engine
1. Java runtime I suppose you could get this from the java/sun website, but this method will set up an autoinstall. -Go to this site: http://www.vassalengine.org/ - click the download tab on the top right, when a new window comes up with downloads you should see a statement that says: Latest version: 1.3.1.1 Release Date: Jan. 8, 2003 Click here to launch VASSAL If you have problems, read the notes about using Web Start To get the java runtime click on the underlined word “notes” in the bottom sentence. This should bring up a page that says: VASSAL uses Sun's Java Web Start technology to launch. Web Start is packaged with version 1.4 of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE), which may be downloaded here. If your platform doesn't support Java 1.4, you can still run an archived version of VASSAL. -click on the underlined word “here” and that will take you to the java runtime page. Click on the download box and select what version of windows you are running. It should then proceed to auto install. You may have to answer a few questions. It may pop up a box saying something about a program trying to get “unauthorized access” to your computer. Click ok. Its just trying to install something that can access your computer’s Kernal. Normally this is a bad thing, but its ok from this site, and it only does it once.
2. Vassal engine back on this site: http://www.vassalengine.org/ you can download the vassal engine. Its in the downloads area. Download it then click on the icon for the file (REMEMBER WHERE YOU DOWNLOADED IT TO!) to install it. It should do some more downloading.
3. DnD mini Module you can get the module from this site: http://members.iinet.net.au/~pnmcomputers/ Its located on the left side of the screen with a graphic Icon for DnD miniatures. Its saved as a Zip file. Zip is a type of shrunken file that needs to be enlarged before it works. You should be able to put it in the same directory as your other vassal files. I have heard conflicting results on whether you need to unzip it first or not. If it doesn’t work one way, try another. Winzip unzips files into a folder on your C drive called unzipped. Check there if your using winzip. Make sure you Move all the files to the location you have put vassal in. Now you should be able to open up the vassal program. Click on the Vassal Icon in the folder. It should bring up a small box with options on it for loading or editing modules. Choose and click load module. From the suggested list, Load the skirmishmodule1.5 module and you should be set. The vassal program should load from there. Once loaded, you need to connect to the server to actually play opponents. Once in the program a window pops up click on the icon that looks like: ----> <---- it should bring up another split screen. Click on the 2 arrows icon (like the one above) on the right side to connect to the server. Once on there s a help file to learn a bit about Vassal and the skirmish module.
Its pretty straight forward, but feel free to post comments or Email me if you have a problem.
Note about finding opponents: Most seem to be on around 9 PM or later Eastern Standard time. Its been a bit slow lately after the holidays but It should pick back up. If you don’t see anyone on at the time, change your name to “MSG for GAME” or something similar and leave the program on. Someone always seems to be popping in every half hour or so.
FAQ:
How to I start a game? To start a new game, you must be in a room other than the main room. Choose to create a new room first. Then choose File (top left) then new game. How do I join a game? If a player has a game set up in a room you need to join the room, then right click on a players name on the far right screen and choose “synchronize”. You should join the game at that point.
I can’t see a map! Help? The box sizes for the text area, tile/fig menu and others get a little wacky. Often they enlarge to take up the whole screen. The mapboard is at the bottom so click and drag the bottom edge of the menu boxes up. A map should appear. Note that it only appears if your in a game or watching one.
How do I change my name? Under File then Edit preferences. The name “Mungo Lord of Chaos” is not suggested.
How do I rotate tiles on the map? Its easiest to just right click on them while they are still in the tile menu and choose to rotate it to the desired position. If its on the map, Hold shift and click on it and a purple outline should appear. Then right click and choose to rotate. The board is VERY big.
How can I see it all? Along the top of the screen in the middle is a pair of Magnify glass icons. One enlarges and the other shrinks the map. Size to comfort. Unfortunatly you need to do this every game.
How do I determine Line of Sight? There is a tab along the top marked LOS. It allows you to draw a line between two figures to check LOS. Your opponent (nor anyone else) can see this line. Use the focus markers located in the tiles/unit menu to show your opponent where you are shooting from or checking LOS. They look like gun crosshairs.
How do I adjust HP and stuff? Right click on a figure and you should get a slew of options.
Where are the figs stats? This program is not designed to be an easy way to play the game for free. You should be using the stat cards for the figures you ACTUALLY own. If an opponent plays something you are not familiar with then ask them what it does or check out a site like www.maxminis.com and look at their figure lists.
(added by galneweinhaw) You can also find the stats, if you don't have your cards handy [)], here: -Maxminis (Out of Date) -Hordelings (Click the near invisible down arrow in the top left corner to bring up the search box... then search for the figure) -Vesivus
Is the dice roller fair? Yeah it its. Roll it about 400 times and add up and average the results. Its should be roughly fair. Rolling a D20 gives you 20 possible results which can lead to it seeming to have goofy results. Rolling 3 20’s in a row may seem highly unlikely, but its no more unlikely than rolling 12 -6-13. It just stands out in your memory more.
How do I observe a game? Join the room of the game you wish to observe, then "synchronize" with on of the players playing in the game by right clicking their name and selecting "synchronize".

| One of these days I'll figure out how not to hit so many buttons...
Anyways, just writing to let you know all the links worked great. I was able to get Vassal and the skirmish module. Once installed it all worked and I was able to start watching mini skirmishes.
My question - now that I can get there and get started how do you actually do a skirmish battle on Vassal once you "start a game"? I have very little actual skirmish experience and therefore is it basically just like a table top skirmish where you do the following:
1) Construct warband (with cards) 2) Roll initiative 3) Place tiles 3) Place mini's on board 5) Start skirmish
Please let me know as I would like to start battling with all of you.

| Having just played my first Vassal game, I'll describe my experience as a newbie as well:
Find someone to play with. This can generally be accomplished by looking for someone with "!" next to their name. Send a private message (right-click) to initiate request.
For the first game, I found it easier for the opponent to create the room (although it's not that hard to do), and choose the battle mat. Once I joined the room, and "synchronized" I was given the option of Observer or Player X. Of course, Player X is the right choice here.
One difference I found from observing to playing, is that you'll frequently want the map sized small enough that there is blank space left next to it. This is the "offboard" work area where you can assemble your warband, and other items such as templates, focuses, etc.
Find your creatures and tiles in the tiles/units window, and drag as many as needed to an offboard area. Both players use the same area, so you may want to keep it neat. [)]
Even though it is an on-line game, I found it very handy to have the cards in front of me anyways. It saved a lot of time as opposed to looking them up online. Additionally, I had copies of my opponents cards too, so I could check them just as easily.
One opponent should drag the Initiative/Turn indicator onto the map, and most players tend to create an "Information Marker" for each side. This can be used to show current points, warband effects, etc. (Right-click provides three options - Info 1, 2, and 3. These are the three different lines available.)
From there, it's a matter of initiative, and dragging your creatures onto and around the map.
I would suggest opening a new room on your own (label it testing or some other non-combat name) and play around with placing things, removing, changing, etc.

| I tried the vassal mod a couple of nights ago. Was a bit fustrating at first, but the instructions all seemed very clear. I did have a little trouble downloading the mod file.
Very impressive & kudos to whomever(s) made the mod. [^]
I had one problem I haventr seen here. When I joined the server, there was noone else there.... but when I pressed 'server list' i could see that others where playing in different rooms but I couldnt join them from the server list. Instead of joining 'skirmish minis' I had joined 'rpg skrimish minis' and I had to edit the mod and change the name to match where people were playing. I couldnt see an option to enter a change room command except by doing it that way.

| You have the wrong mod file, which is why you ended up in a different spot then the rest of us. Go to http://members.iinet.net.au/~pnmcomputers/ and click on the image that looks like a demon head on the left, underneath the underlined 'Vassal Mod File' listing. That will give you the proper mod file with it's currently most up to date options. | | | |

When I hover my mouse over the demon head, I see a hyperlink to http://members.iinet.net.au/~pnmcomputers/Miniatures%20Skrimish%20Game%201-7-3.mod (typed address by hand so might have an error in my writing). Clicking on it gets me a zip file Miniatures%20Skirmish%20Game%201-7-3.zip. The zip file contains 1 text file, an info & build file, and an images directory. No mod file. Do I need to do something with the build file?
Thanks for your help :)

That zip file IS your mod file. Leave it as is, zipped, and direct Vassal to open the zipped version, when you click on Play Module.
