| As an extra exercise in player education, you could try including a few subpar pieces deliberately in most of the bands and ask them after playing if they can figure out which ones they are.
GFD/dire bears fits all your criteria. Here is a really simple one that doesn't even use greycloaks:

2x Orc Warrior
4x Abyssal Maw
12 activations
The Curse serves as protections from range...The tiefling is for initiative and to be sure the Red Samurais to fight till death...Eye serves as a backup fighter or finisher that guides the Red Samurais so that they're always in command...Because of the Curse Aura too, the DC of the BW of the Samurais would likely to be 16...The Abyssal Maws for great damage against a similar warband that has big hitters with low AC...the orc warriors ar e for activations...
This warband is cheap...the only rare is the Eye of Grummsh...

i didn't include Ogre Ravager because of its size and speed...Eye and OC is enough to dealt a great damage to force enemies for morale...the curse spirits are there to protect your hitters and for the Cusre Aura...You can have a Red Samurai instead of an Orc Champion if you're out of OC... | |

I like it, but to make it even cheaper, and to get slightly tighter synergy, I'd sub a flind captain for the eye, getting the red sams up to 25 damage swings, and the flind is no pushover either. | |

Maybe it's not good enough to be tier 2, but it is pretty forgiving and relatively simple. There are 3 large creatures, but one of them flies. The toughest thing for a new player will be remembering the Lich Necromancer's commander effect.
Maybe this is too ranged heavy to be workable, but learning how ranged bands fare on the battlefield can be a good thing to learn early:
