you dont mean the commander effect right? Cause it only affects fighters and soldiers. If you mean otherwise I still dont think it will be too good. Its still only a lv 6 even so it has a hard time making saves other than moral with dol arrah( still fails 1/4 of the time). 55 hp just isnt enough despite healing. Still too easy to kill in 1 round. And it also has spd 4 which might not be as important with the new map but is still bad. Damage is still to low also. If you are trying to make a wall to stand behind go with 3 dwarf phylanx soldiers. good hp, and higher ac for its point cost and as a bonus it becomes fearless with dol arrah

The AC bonus only applies to adjacent creatures, so the Spiker has to clump next to the CoDA, and that's just begging for a template attack from the likes of the LSD, Steel Predator, Chraal, Red Sam, etc. And those templates, not coincidentally, bypass AC.

There are just too many autohit energy attacks in this game that you can't rely solely on high AC to save you.

Even still, the AC bonus only bumps up the Spiker to AC 24. That is easy for LE to hit, and still manageable for CG and CE. To make the Spiker's spike shield really effective, you'd need to pump her AC further with shield of faith (+2 AC) and divine protection (+1 AC). That brings it to 27.

Unfortunately, in order to get divine protection and shield of faith, you need to set aside 30-37 points (Eberk+Cleric of Moradin or Eberk+Dwarven Artificer). That's a lot of wasted points to make the Spiker barely viable and even then, the Eye will hit that 27 with a roll of 12, the Red Sam and FB will hit on a 13, and the OC will hit on a 14. Only the Ogre Ravager and Goliath are really put out by the high AC.

So, long story short, I don't think any figure currently available really makes the Spiker viable.

I have a band made up with two of them (eberk, artificer,CoDA). it is just sitting in my band fodder. I haven't bottered to used it yet. I just don't see where the damage is going to come from.

An interesting idea for non-hardcore play. Tier 2-3. Still, it's only 5 damage... and they always have the option of just not swinging, or going after someone else. And since most stuff that sees play is fast enough to swing around your front line anyway (barring bunkering up in a Treasure Room) and pop the support figs... eh. Anyway, yeah, not hardcore competitive.

The nice thing about the CoDA is that the AC bonus comes from a SPECIAL ABILITY and not a commander effect. It stacks w/ the commander effects of the DD, SoH, DS, etc. You can get some pretty sick ACs that way.

Good argument. You just helped me make some crucial decisions in a LG band I've been designing where I couldn't decide between more offense or defense.
