It is a magic buff that can be applied to your weapon or an allies. It is a touch spell, it makes the weapon touched magic,+1, for the duration of the battle. It must be cast on a weapon,I believe, any weapon either ranged or melee. For natural attacks the spell magic fang is used. Magic weapons attack at +1 and bypass damage reduction in the skimish game. Damage reduction is a lot more complicated in RPG so magic weapon isn't as usefull but still okay.

Actually, while magic fang is only usable on Animals or Magical Beasts, magic weapon is usable on all creatures. See the DDM FAQ (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/mi/20031023x) under Spells: quote: Q. Does the magic weapon spell work on creatures that don't wield weapons, such as a Dragon or a Wolf? A. Yes. The magic weapon spell works on all creatures, except those with Spell Resistance All. Also, magic weapon and magic fang affect ALL attacks by the recipient, not either Melee Attacks or Ranged Attacks (i.e. both Melee AND Ranged are affected by one casting of the spell). It even applies to Special Abilities that are also attacks (Bulette's Leap ability, for example; see Guy's clarifications page (http://homepage.mac.com/guyf/DDM/Clarifications.html) under DR (Damage Reduction))

I meant you can use magic weapon for both meele and ranged attacks(all attacks by the mini during the battle) not just one or the other. He had asked if it was both meele and ranged or just melee and I was trying to say it can be both.

As a small side note magic weapon grants +1 attack and ignores DR it does not make the attack magic damage. Currently there is no real difference but you never know what weird ability they'll come up with.
