I was thinking about putting together a Competitive Guide to Underdark Sealed before Friday. (Assuming we have the stats available.)

Though there are other articles I want to write too.

Get moving on that article Doubt - It's only 2 days for people to read it if it was finished.

As soon as we get a format other than Assault, there will be room for an article on that kind of format.

Some others have already done a good job with the Activations question. I think if someone wanted to search these threads and put together what's already out there, that this would come close to covering it. However, someone could put together a by-faction, or a by-band-type activation article, that would be good.

I would be interested in writing an article on draft strategy, but it may be up to a few weeks before I have the time to get around to it. Now that I think of it, maybe I shouldn't do that until after the limited championship. No need to help the competition. Not that anyone who can make it to the top 8 needs my advice, though. [:)]

One assignment is already done except to be updated with Underdark stats (ChoE commander effect list):

http://www.maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=8975

I will happily take on this kind of project. I enjoy making lists of creatures subject to specific commander effects (including warband building). It's one of those warband building exercises that helps me look for new warband concepts.

Alright Faragdar, the ChoE list is yours; do me a favor and start it on a new thread so you can update it and it's the first entry in the thread. I do the same thing myself ... I've got a notebook full of lists like "LE creatures with DR and/or SR and high speed" etc.

Craziness, but helpful when brainstorming.

Please start writing articles!

I am hoping to have a socal ddm website launched by gencon socal.

It will be modest at first, and we will have many homegrown ideas, but we also talked about getting others to write for us.

The site will not be like the WOTC site as far as strategy goes [:)] nor will it be a free for all like Merric's. Just a few useful articles by proven authors, updated once or twice a month....

Let it be.

Anyone see a need for a tournament etiquette article? How about non-tournament etiquette? I mean, it's one thing to hang out with your buddies and play, it's another thing to head out to a FLGS and play there, and another thing entirely when a case is on the line, or when an invitation is on the line.

It's a little outside the writing assignment topics here, but it might be relevant.

I actually wrote this article for the Wizo online publication mag that's done over on the WoTC forum.

I'm sure it could use some updating and expansion. They cruelly limited me to 2000 words at that time.

Along with the Champion of Elisatree list, I think someone should add lists for all commander's warband building and commander effects. Such as CE spellcasters for Red Wizard, CE abberations affected by the Dark Naga's commander effect.... Also are these threads going to be stickied?

Wow! Everything looks great! I'm glad to see some new material in the skirmish forum, it seemed people had just lost interest in skirmishing for a while. Much appreciation to everyone who's contributed to the new reference thread.

I'd like to add a list for viable summons/minions but I'm not too familiar with LG/CG pieces and I'm sure I'd mess it up. If anyone would like to take on this task though, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Ive got a write up on Tech figures that I have been mentally working on, Ill get a draft done this weekend and have some people look it over, probably get it up Monday or Tuesday.

Also if no one else does it I can do a list of summoners and options. Ive got one mostly done already (one of the warband generators has it) just need to update it for UD.

I'm a big fan of the Rakshasa. I've already compiled a list of his followers who can benefit from a stolen Eilistraee commander effect. I've also made lists in the past of followers who can benefit from a stolen Cleric of Dol Arrah or Village Priest commander effect. I'll start work on a full set of Rakshasa lists so folks know who's going to get the benefit of various stolen CEs.

Is there any call for a highly normalized SQL Server 2000 (soon to be 2005) database with all the skirmish stats? This would allow you to query on most anything (e.g., find all units with a third attack of bonus +8 or higher, size large, and Cold Reistance 10 or higher.). Of course, you would need to write the sql to do this, but the normalized nature of the database would make the sql relatively simple.

The database exists, but I am behind in entering the last set. If there is demand, I could get this caught up in the next few weeks.

Did you know MaxMinis hosts XML files with all of the stats in them? I think Hordelings uses the same or similar stats.

I've been trying for a while to get Hordelings and MaxMinis to use the same source data for this stuff ... one of them host the master, the other replicates in the evenings, etc. It is the data behind the MaxMinis gallery (those are XML generated, not just formatted text) and also Jai's minitracker.

I'm not sure MaxMinis has the bandwidth and/or horsepower to host the SQL db (it already has size issues) but hosting it somewhere would be sweet. I'm just tired of seeing slightly different stats in different places.

When it is finally released to the public google can host that data...

it's not quite availbe for public consumption yet.

BTW... where are these XML files for the stats on maxminis?

I'm not sure where the direct link is but Jai can probably point you in the right direction. If you have Jai's minitracker it pulls the files down and are in your minitracker directory structure.

This is a great idea - the licensing of SQL2005 for Internet usage is huge though...

One of these days WoTC will update their tournament page when I'm in the top 5... they never seem to do when I'm in that bracket :(

Hey Chris, any chance that you and Jesse are gonna put together toolkits for Epic format once you are done with the standard. I realize it would be somewhat similar but would there be enough difference to merit a toolkit for it?

Well, it would probably be useful but Jesse and I would be going on pretty thin ground as we don't have alot of direct epic experience.

What I'd rather do is find someone in the community who plays alot or watches folks who play alot of events. Maybe one of the MN contingent - JohnTheElder or Newtoncain or DragonVenom ... come to think of it I think DragonVenom took a pass at this a while back.

EDIT: Ack send me the link to DragonVenom's post on some 500 point builds; it's in the list now.

I don't know if this helps but below is a cut and paste job from an ADVICE THREAD. Some experienced players give their advice on Tournament play.

--------------------- thread ----------------

IAN B

In sealed, barring really extreme matchup problems, the biggest advantage you can get over someone with a superior warband is beating them in the tile placement game. If you can get a big enough tile point lead, you can win without necessarily outplaying them in any other way. The corollary to this is that you should always strive to prevent your sealed opponent from getting tile points, even if it means you commit a piece that seems to expensive to waste on killing the tile grabber. I can think of at least 4 or 5 games I've won in sealed simply by doing this, even if it eats up a turn or two from an expensive piece, like a DCoC or something. The other advantage you have is that average player will usually make errors that you can capitalize on.To give you an extreme example, in the 2nd ANF sealed tournament game I played, I won a game 200-140 or so where my opponent had far more points than me left on the board at the end. The difference was I had beaten him on tile points 120-10 or something. If he had simply taken the time to 'waste' a turn with his efreeti to kill my wild elf tile grabber, I would have lost that game in a landslide. Conversely, if I *hadn't* blown my blink out to send my direguard out of command into his scoring tile to kill *his* tile grabber, I would have lost that game in a landslide. It kept the direguard from contributing meaningfully for 2 or 3 turns, but it was easily worth it.Another example would be a game I played against jgsugden at a fairly recent ANF event. I ended up barely winning by 2 points, in large part because I decided to use a 30 point piece early on to kill his tile grabber, even though it took the 30 pointer out of the immediate conflict for a few turns.
Anson on WotC boards

DOUBTOFBUDDHA

I think IanB pretty much covered it.1) Win the Tile War2) Play conservatively, with a particular goal in mind, but keep things flexible enough that you can wait for them to make a mistake.3) Take advantage of said mistake. 4) Kill them.
Jesse Dean

GUNTHER

I third what Ian B said. Tile points, tile points, tile points....a difference they do make.

In the sealed qualifier, I had an absolutely terrible pull but still got wins.

KIDDOC

I agree with what Jesse and Gunthar said, unconditionally. And, I'd like to add something else to that list.

5) Lose.

Sometimes you just lose. One of the reasons I hugely favor drafting over sealed events is that it introduces a tad more skill back into the warband creation process.

That said, in sealed, you can just get absolute crap. Players with crazy-awesome pulls, even if they're unskilled, will sometimes just win. You should do 1-4 (well, 4 may get you arrested, look me up if that happens, we'll plead insanity), but you should also have a realistic expectation of your performance. If you know your band is crap, you'd damn sure better choose the pieces and the tiles that best maximize the small chance that you'll win. This is particularly important for selecting point-scoring miniatures.

So, maybe you lose. It's sealed, it happens. The good news is, you can be sure that if a bad player has a great warband, there will be some awesome players trying to make it happen with absolute crap. The best combination of playskill and warband is likely to win, no matter which of the later he faces.

FRY

The best defense a good player with a bad pull has against a bad player with a good pull is tile placement. Tile points (specifically, denying your opponent tile points) are crucial.
