| I thought the large deep dragon looked pretty cool.
I also think the mounted drow patrol looks cooler in person then it did in the preview.

The Balor! I was blown away when my wife opened my booster and dumped him on the table. Turns out, my Balor had a glass jaw. 3 out of 5 games, he routed off the board. Ouch. He was great in terms of intimidation power, but I guess at 95 points, I'd have expected him to rally at least once. | | POST DISCLAIMER: Above post may contain humor. | I was disappointed by my draws. But that's not what you meant I suppose. Of the pieces I did get, I was more impressed than disappointed--I think there are a lot of playable pieces in Underdark (not a lot of tier-1, but a whole pile of tier-2).
The Justicator's sword is really badly bent and his face looks kinda funny, to be honest.

| I had nearly the same experience you did, Kiddoc. I drew a Balor (and a Draegloth), and had it rout on me twice; once I managed to rally it just before it left the board, and the other time I lost a game I had been winning because of it. (Of course, I committed the grave tournament sin of not backing off when I had a point lead; instead I brought my Balor into melee, and lost the game; a mistake I'll know better than to commit next time.)
I think that in regular 200 point play, the Balor will be much stronger once you team him up with, say, a Tiefling Captain.
I was actually pretty happy with many of the sculpts that I thought looked cheesy in the pictures we've seen, like the Iron Golem, the Marut, and even the Spider of Lolth (the red eyes in two rows is less noticeable). But the Loyal Earth Elemental and Dark Naga still look like mounds o' poo.
For what it's worth, the warband I ran was:

| I actually did really well with the Balor... I won three out of four rounds and should have one the first but I really had no idea what I was doing the first game and didn't know how to keep score. The Command ability of the Balor took one or more opponents every game. And towards the end of the game, I was sitting with a +12 initiative. I was kind of disapponted that I got the dromite wilder for my second rare, but I won a booster and got another Balor.

I wrote a post on the Wiz forums yesterday about how I thought the Balor would have a glass jaw.
Unless you bring in another commander, it's like the Steel Predator.
He hits well, but only does 35 damage, and needs the opposing mini to fail a morale check 75% of the time before he has a 54% chance of enslaving.
Strangely, the Balor could be pretty good at enslaving Rikka.
But yeah... AC20, routes after 65 damage, and morale save 10 don't make him too sturdy for 95pts.
Damien I had wanted to play against you because I felt that Kord, Rikka, and the Gith Monk could probably stun/route the Balor. Who knows. You did well though... I heard people saying they were afraid to play against you.
Just pulling a Balor makes you a winner from Phantom's tourney, as it's the most expensive Rare of the set.
Be careful about the Balor and Tiefling... it only leaves room for two CE hitters and nothing much else.
Tiefling, Balor, Ogre Rav, Cursed Spirit, Trog? I haven't added the points, but, you lower morale saves by a ton. It could work, but, the Tiefling ALSO has a glass jaw now, and you're running with two hitters vs potentially 3-4... but you really have to commit to the enslave factor.

| A number of things disappointed me. Not pulling a commander or being able to play both my rares stunk, and my Githzerai Monk had a MAJOR glass jaw also. Ran, and kept running every time it was hit. 8 tries and no morale.
Also, AC still does not make up for HP. The big LG pieces are still too short in this area. It also seems 30+ point critters are either +10/+5 or have insane attack bonus stats, but not much in-between.
The Xen'drik Champion is a pathetic rare. Would make a good uncommon, but value as a rare is terrible.
Commander 0 is a terrible idea when the Endgame tile is also allowed. Basically, if you don't pull a commander, chances are (if your opponent uses the Endgame Tile) you're screwed.
The Wizard Tactician was also a horrible piece to have in a format where Commander 0's are needed at times. If you march out with a Drow Sergeant as your solo commander in constructed, you get what you deserve, but in an already limited format the Tactician was a real achilles slicer to those already hamstrung.
Rikka was also a pathetic piece to have in a format where Commander 0's are used. You have to worry abou tthose big killers coming at you from the front and a decent hitter bopping in behind your carefully prtected commander. While two Go;d Dwarves and a Spiritfolk were able to take care of her in one of two matches I played against her, she was definitely very much present in the finals.
Sense a theme? Just like Angelfire, all the commander assassins thrown in with Commander 0 bands was a really stupid move as far as game balance for sealed is concerned.
The Balor turned out to be mediocre too as neither of the good pulls in teh hands of solid players made the finals.

| Hmm, biggest disappointments...
Well, the first is that I kept forgetting about activations and being under command. I basically lost one game because of that, and probably two games. That would have made me 4-1 instead of 2-3, but I should complain about going 2-3 in my first 5 games EVER playing DDM.
My second disappointment was having my dice rolling go to the Underdark halfway through my third match and all of my fourth match. BASIC RULES OF DDM #1: If you don't roll well, you won't win!!!
I must say that a low point was also beating Gunthar. He was a great sport, but having 3 of his figure rout off the grid in the first 3 rounds was EXTREMELY frustrating for him, and I could relate later on. Sure, it was nice to get a win, but his Marut was no match for my LEE, Half-Orc Paladin, Hunched Giant and Rikka.
My last disappointment is now something that completely pisses me off. I was playing against a Wizard Tactician, and he did Bigby's Slapping hand on me, but failed to tell me there was a saving throw. Now I know I should have asked about it, but c'mon, have some integrity and tell the person. That was poor. (it wasn't Gunthar)
Other than that, I had a great time. I learned alot, and I would like to do it again sometime. | | Have/Want list: http://maxminis.com/hwlist.asp?user=tomas Reference thread: http://maxminis.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6938 Trades Completed(51):Unearthed Arcana, arcabious(x2), Noghri, phrennzy, jgsugden, BigBC, maniacal_mini_monger, cyderakk, Chaotic Good, symbiotesx2, Nixlord, dagonet(x2), Red Ranger, Zaukrie, Thatoneguy, Schooly_D, arbados(x2), scottbis, Thailfi(x2), Chiaroscuro, dumdragon, jedijon, DrX, ckissee, time bandit, the1ring, scallamander, sttmxn, Lance H, qstor, Thor, glumag, Urban Druid, xuthal, jaidenshea, Ghendar, Nurvel, raymo13, ickthegreat, Primarch, WakeXX, kyrin, Crisisman, desiderata, smetzger, Vrecknidj, Frostrune Trades Pending(): BAD TRADES(3):Satsujin Kingyo, Wraith, Yo Hon Email: thompmar@hotmail.com

| Hmmm...most disappointing would be my fumbling the last game to miss the final 8; it's a habit that I haven't figured out how to break consistently.
The biggest surprise was the number of really tough beaters in this set. I should have had some inkling of this - I'd looked through the spoiler list earlier in the week with an eye toward 'warband structure' and noticed that, while there were a decent number of titan-class 70+ point figs, there was a surprisingly large number of 40-60 point 'heavy hitter' class figs.
There were very few bands at the pre-release that didn't have at least one heavy hitter, and many had two or even more. You could tell the hitters were out there, too, as despite the number of AC25 figs on the battle grid, few of them were escaping unscathed and many were actually being dropped. If you went in thinking that high AC was going to be a strength of your warband, I imagine you were sorely disappointed.

| I learned that Iron golems are killing machines. Nearly unstoppable killing machines when tied to an Orc paladin and being escorted by a magical floating suit of armor carring a flaming sword. Good times.
Also, that crazy drow with the sleep poison, who would have figured, but she pulled off some amazing stunts in at least 2 games. Nothing like knocking 3 times your point cost out for the rest of the game with a single stab :-p
Overall though, the set seems to be a lot better for limited play than my first glance seemed to indicate to me. The unstoppable pieces aren't quite as unstoppable as I thought, and the uncommons/commons are viable enough to at least partially offest a bad rare pull.
Only real dissapointment for the day I think came from the Dark Naga actually. I had hoped the gen con promos were especially bad painted ones, but really, a lump of black plastic with the occasional purple splotch...hrmnmn.
All in all, a good time to be sure.

| My band was BPM, Gith Monk, Dromite, Royal Guard, Spider Swarm, Drow Arcane Guard, and Guenhwyver. I was able to take out a Balor and Medium Silver dragon in the first round. The rest of the tournament, my dice completely failed me. I failed every one of the Wild Surge attempts I tried to make with the Dromite after the first round. They took no damage in 5 attempts to roll double damage for it. I failed conceal about 75% of the time, especially with the Gith.
I also feel one of my opponents was stalling due to various factors. That aggravated me when put on top of everything else.

| Wasn't dissapointed by anything, got some nice rares (BPM & Hunched Giant) had a winning record, played lots of cool folks, and got to watch an Aspect of Kord ger taken down by a spider of lloth in the semifinal match.
We had 18 people out for the pre-release, none under 20 y.o. (maybe 25 tbh), so us old fellers just kicked back and rained havoc upon one another.

| The Aspect of Kord could get his nipples pierced. Strange sculpt, that one.
The Battle Plate Marshal combined with my Gith Monk made for a Gith Monk that never routed. Ever. Heck, few things routed and those that did (Winter wolf, Wizard Tac) rallied the few times they routed.
I made a mental error in the game against my buddy Clay that almost cost me the match. He hit me with a wicked lightning bolt from his dark naga, routing my wizard tac (who thankfully rallied) and damaging two other minis. | | Triangle DDM Skirmish Group | My Email | 45-ish trades and counting | Stuff for Trade * * * Show your brother some love and click here * * *

| I got good pulls and in general, liked the quality of the set for limited play. Looking over the bands, I didn't really see any that didn't stand a chance.
One of my disappointments was playing well against the other players at the store, and then making tactical mistakes against my friends. Oh well. That's not a very hard thing to cope with.

| I ended up running Artemis Enteri, a Marut, Gold Dward Soldier, and a Satyr commander 0. I came in 2nd, only losting to Bill Baldwin who had a Dark Naga, Mounted Drow Patrol, Deep Dragon, and Duergar Champion.
The thing is I had also pulled a Troglodyte Captain and a Duergar Champion in my packs, but I felt a need to run both the Marut and Artemis (ignoring my own article's advice, ah well.) If my 4th round opponent had been tougher (he was running Balor, Dark Naga, Wizard Tactician, Half-ogre barbarian) I probably would have gone 2-2, and it would have been a sad day.

| I was disappointed with my Aspect of Kord. He'd get in there, do 40 damage then go splat. I missed conceal a bunch of times too. I agree with gunthar, duergar with a decent commander was a powerful combo. I still thing the aspect of kord is a good piece, i ithink i just didn't know how to use him effectively, especially with the pieces I got (tough when you get 3 doubles out of two packs). I was also dissapointed I didn't use cleave from my dwarf ancestor the one time it actually was a possibility. Le sigh.

| Marut with damage boost from a 1/2 Orc paladin. And a Death Slaad to kill off the high HP low AC opponents. Got me first place at manchester. Loolth's sting deserves a medel or something for sleeping Artemis Entreri in the final match. Which my entire warband then pounded for a quick 89pt lead. I wouldn't run into the teeth of his warband as he hid in his treasure room and he wasn't willing to come face my Marut-Dark Naga team Team at center board (right next to the endgame tile) so we ended our match tied in tile points with no kills.

| my disappointments had to do with my play. I have never won the first game of any tourney. Not once. Its like the break in period.. the stuff I think works in theory doesnt and I get my ass handed to me. In this case it was thinking that AC 19 and 90 HPs was tough. Kord is not tough. He is a big old sissy.. with a massive sword. I ended up hiding him half in the corder of a tile and using the cover and basing my Gold Dwarf, etc against him to avoid getting clobbered / surrounded. My first round I tried to rush with him (his speed is a big psychological factor.. you WANT to use him as a mobile assault force) and while he got the commander to run, he got squished 6 ways from sunday. My much larger disappointment is being sloppy on the turn 6 report. I had been the first name on the sheet for 5 rounds.. so at the end, I just checked the top box, signed it and handed it in. Turns out I just gave the win (and a top 8 finish) to my opponent who I had just defeated. :-( He was a good sport about it and I left not feeling so badly.. but I just know that one mistake will mess up my DCI rankings in some meaningful way in the future.
But overall, I had a great time, played well enuf to be satisfied with my performance and met some really nice people. | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist
