| I was thinking about writing a "toolkit" for beginners, like:
how to indicate what you've activated this round checking your opponent's cards...
stuff that isn't "play" related necessarily. Now that we lost everything, would that be of interest? | | Fastest dropping DCI ranking on record! Champion of Juiblex | |

I think this is a good idea. I seem to always be attracting new players and many of them would benefit from something like this.

| Yeah whip out a "N00B GUIDE TO D&D MINIATURES" [:p] I'll offer to help. Perhaps we can use this thread as a sounding board for the players to offer what they think is an important piece of info for a beginner.
I'll start with "Tile Counting". Counting tiles can be confusing in DDM because of double and single diagonals. When counting diagonals it's important to remember that the first square is a single movement square but the next diagonal is double movement. It then alternates back and forth. From single again then to double for each diagonal square moved as one activation.

Yes! Some sort of "best practices" would be very welcome. Include things like: - how to best check LOS (string or laser pt.?) - how to best mark spell effects - how use 8 OWs without getting confused (color or numers?) - and so on

| Yes. write it up.. but I would suggest minimizing the overlap between the manual and the write up. I would keep it to things outside the game.. not actual game play.
And I cant believe not everyone uses sleeves with dry erase markers for all kinds of stuff. Damage, spell effects, writing REGEN across my Death Slaad (cause I forget).. all go on the card.
Differentiating between identical models / cards? I went down to my FLOSS (Friendly Local Office Supply Store *groan*) and bought "dots" - tiny round stickers in various festive colors. When Im running 3 Duergar Champs, each one gets a dot on the base and another on the card.
I went out and got a laser level off ebay for the cheap.. but unless Im trying to measure LOS across a HUGE map, I just use one of those [url=http://www.thinkgeek.com/homeoffice/gear/57af/]belt clip retractable badge holders. They arent as cheap as a piece of string, but.. um. they look cooler. and alot of us have them on our belts anyway.
Marking whick figs have activated? Ive seen 4 methods I like
- "Tapping" (turning them 90 degrees) or flipping (turning them over) your cards like in MtG and other CCGs
- Putting a token / marker on the card to indicate it has gone (or removing them)
- Holding all the cards in your hand and laying them down in a pile when you have used them
- alternatively, having them on the table and moving them to the side of the map after activating them
Several of these systems allow for those few cards (Choker, Beholder, Aretmis...) with dual activations to easily track both moves (tokens, tap/flip) | | Minis... Serious Business Completed Trades (18 ) | Pending Trades (0) Ebay seller to Avoid –Fantasy_Quest_Dist
