Alright ... it took me a while to pull this together.

We had 56 entries in this little event. That's a heck of alot of entrants. Once I started to get feedback I tapped the former organizers / winners to help and they agreed (else we'd have had 60 entries ...) and here's how we're going to do things.

We're going to run this like a 64-contestant single-elimination tournament.

- We'll have four brackets - Earth, Air, Fire and Water.
- Each bracket was seeded pretty much straight in order based on the posts with the warbands. The first band went to Earth, next to Air, then Fire ... Water ... repeat.
- Since there are some byes (as we don't have an even 64 players) I've given the byes to the first people to submit. My thought is that by submitting early you're open to being meta-gamed so you get a free round.
- Nix will run the Earth bracket, Kypdurron the Air bracket, Psistef the Fire and I'll run Water.
- At the end of the eliminations we'll have a semi-finals pitting Earth v Air and Fire v Water.
- The the finals, the grand champion of all time (for WBC IV) will the winner of the final match.

I've emailed the bracket info out to the others, hopefully we'll get the voting threads up today/tonight!

This is a really fresh idea and I appreciate the effort that has been taken to put it together (and I'm not just saying this because I think triple Justicators are so awesome[:)]).

We all now stand in awe at the task facing the person running WBC V. Good luck topping this one.

So... how do you determine the pairings? Is it a random generator?

Also, is there going to be another one? I've got a few crazy ideas for one. Such as: not ranged attacks or spells allowed. No melee attacks allowed. No rare, no repeats. All commons. Fun stuff. :-P I better shut my mouth or i'll end up running one, which i don't have time for.

I can't think of many bad matchups for the Justicator X3. Should be very deadly.

It's kind of scary to see that the next matchup I'm likely to face is another heXen'drik. Most likely some form of Xen'drik band is gonna win this.... [B)]

What's really annoying is that I keep on getting good warband ideas after the contest has started.

I seeded folks pretty much straight in ordre of posting

Band 1 - Earth 1
Band 2 - Air 1
...

Band 5 - Earth 2
Band 6 - Air 2

....

One of the things I fight interesting about this is the convergence on some specific figures. Many of these we kinda knew were "good enough" and this is pretty much a validation that some are darn close. They are still largely on the outside (except the Xendrik ... that thing already had a bit of a groundswell of support and this seals it). Others (Justicator, etc.) are poised ... they are in the bucket of figs that I generally will keep around JUST IN CASE.

Yeah they seem to find a place in 500 point warbands as great Beholder blockers. Their slow speed is always what keeps them back. Maybe someone will come up with a commander that has "Golem Move Action" [:D]

The thing with the heXen'drik's seem to be that they hav a fairly large amount of fans. It might not matter would they win the game or not. They will still get some fan votes, I think.

I think people are in love with the Xendrik's LOW point cost versus it effectiveness. But there are inherent flaws with the Xendrik that I think curtails it IMHO. The most important being once based it does a measy 5 dam. So, charge it with a hitter that does 20pts of damage, it has 45 hp, that's not a lot. Hit it - not difficult ie. flanking or charging. Pass Conceal 6 - also not hard...more annoying than anything. (Also no conceal vers. breath weapon) If the Xendrik passes MC and it's based, its practically useless except as a possible flanking piece.

With all the maps so far being detrimental to range bands, I don't think the Xendrik is going to have as much impact as people would hope. I think having more than 2 in a warband is folly. Too much of a good thing can lead to disasterous results. So I really don't understand everyones apparent love affair with that Mini...having said that, I would love to own like 7 of them.

The Xendrick's a neat unit, especially for cost, but I really don't know about the validity of the mass swarms of the buggers running around. Has anyone actually tried it? Is it really that effective? I agree that he probably belongs on extended (he's pretty efficient for cost and faction--especially the for CE with it's problematic 20-30 point slot).

I think Xen is particularly good in this format (tier 2).

I do, however, disagree with KMK about its vulnerability in this format.
Anything that can be swarmed, will be swarmed and killed/routed. The Xens simply don't miss that much, so the 15 points, while not assured, is very, very likely. I would say you could get 75 points of damage in one round nearly guarranteed on one figure. This isn't necessarily that much, but combine it with their high AC, blur and spell resistance, and its a respectable package for 23 points.
Xen are great archers as well. You don't necessarily have to seek out the enemy, you have choices. In tier 2 he is great.
In tier 1, I honestly would not play him, but he is close.

I can tell you that the gith fighter, on the other hand, solidly tier 2. I played it a lot in the day, trying to make it work, and the +9/+4 is crippling, particularly coupled with the low HP. 20 damage doesn't mean much if it never hits, and the ability to boost attacks in CE is a recent innovation....certainly not common in the tier 2 figures.

Let it be.

There is too much speed, there are too many enemy constructs, and there are too few solid commanders for Chaotic (to be paired with this piece) right now. It wouldn't take much to drive him back up to tier-1. (Especially as the definition of tier-1 seems to be adrift a bit.)

My 4 ogre mage band was built partly with the xen'drik bands in mind. Yeah, they are sleep immune and have magic resistance, but that doesn't actually matter that much. The cones are there for wiping out the commanders. Once that is done, the combination of conceal 11, regeneration 5, and the low melee damage of the xen'driks means that once it comes down to melee, the ogres should wipe the floor with 'em. I figured there would be a ton of xen'drick bands on the list...

Unfortunately there are a couple near auto-losses for it in the format, in the form of ghaele eladrin and aspect of Demogorgon. Blindsight plus cold resistance is not good times.

Swarming isn't a real concern only because you can only activate two units per turn...so that's maybe 30 pts of damage per turn...but then it's my turn to move two units...it's very situational but a good pilot won't allow his creature to be ganged-up like that I don't think...then again I've been swamped before...darn dire rats!!!!

P.S. I might be heading state side in Sept, business in L.A. How about that beer we keep talking about?

Perfect, KMK. Looking forward to it, at long last.
Remember to give us some notice and we'll make certain to have a tourney then as well!

BTW - yeah, the swarming thing works really well only with an opponent with a split band - either via DD or because they built fast/slow bands, or finally because they are limited in penetrating by terrain. But in those circumstances, it works quite well.

I think it would be cool, next round, if (independent of voting) the warband authors wrote a tiny blurb (say 100 words or less) dictating how they see their band being played in the current matchup.

Interesting to see how people think....

I agree that'd be nice, but you'd have to watch out for the second person to post their strategy in a matchup doesn't directly address strategy in their opponents strategy post. It might be a good situation to have them email the tournament director (or particular bracket director) with the strategy and have them post it when both are submitted.

It'd be a good idea particularly if a band relies on tactics that may not be readily apparent to people who vote. And of course start showing people these more subtle tactics and help people build better warbands. Which is the whole darn point of these contests, IMHO.

well, when looking at the people who did write something up, did it help you pick a winner? for example i did a little one on mine. did that help any?

I voted for you in spite of your blurb. [)]
(You can't magic weapon iron golem - he is immune.]

I liked your matchup though.

However, in some cases I can see how playing your band differently than the vanilla write up could be important, which is why I said sort of a round by round thing. (For example, AFS might be able to take advantage of golem's immunity to stun. You could target golem directly with the soundburst and anyone beside him takes damage and save vs stun (and take 5) - this is a handy was to deal with several minor flankers, etc...)

So far this seem's pretty interesting. The chaotic warband's seem to dominate when the Tier 1 stuff is out.

This is going to get messy when the first Xen'drik mirror matches will show up. All comes down to the commander at that point....

One thing I have noticed for these events. Not only do you need good warband building skills, but you also need to be able to fluently describe your band, and tell why you think it can win. It turns into an excercise of description of tactics as well.

I dunno who is going to run the next one of these, but it might be cool to do a WBC with the Drider Sorcerer. I'd really like to see how it affects things. We're never going to see it unbanned, a lot of players have never seen it, and some players probably think that it could be made viable again.

One way to prove the point of the ban is to do a WBC with it. See if anyone can consistently beat it (you know a lot of people will make bands with it, and a lot will make bands without it, both trying to prove their point).
